Michael’s Thoughts

Greetings to one and all,

There is much to tell about and much to look forward to as we head into the second half of the year. Can you believe it is July already? The last Sunday in June, we worshipped together as the body of Christ and took the opportunity to gather afterwards for a Pot luck Fellowship. The response was wonderful and hopefully some new relationships were established as a result. We will gather together again on July 22nd, so if you missed the first gathering, make sure you make the second. That last weekend in June also afforded the opportunity for around 30 leaders, volunteers and students to enjoy tubing down Ichetucknee Springs and a good time was had by all.

As we enter July, it brings with it VBS and our first High School and Middle School camps, as

well as other activities around the church. Take a look at what else is in First Press as well as the weekly bulletins and find opportunities to engage in relationship-building activities together. If you don’t see something that fits you, let us know; there may be others who might want to get involved in a suggestion you have, who knows?

We have reached the third of the five “Faith Catalysts,” which has us contemplating Private Disciplines. The very word ‘discipline’ has some very negative connotations, but that doesn’t have to be the case. It might be said that discipline is ‘doing what you don’t want to do now, so you can do what you want to do later.’ It’s about delayed gratification. If we look at our lives, there are disciplines in place, both good and bad. In fact, all self-imposed boundaries are a form of discipline. Our relationship with God requires discipline. It brings us closer to God and as a result we have a deeper relationship with God. It can come in many forms—bible study, Sunday School, retreats, Sabbath—but the focus here is on prayer and generosity. Andy Stanley sets forth a challenge to en-ter into the discipline of private daily prayer and also the discipline of giving consistently and to do so for a month. It’s how disciplines become habits, it happens over time and it changes them from ‘something you don’t want to do now, to something you want to do later.’ Take a moment and reflect upon the following scriptures: Matthew 6:1-6 and Mark 1:35. What would it take to establish both prayer and giving as a regular spiritual discipline?

Every day, continue to look around, breathe deeply upon the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and then breathe out that grace on all you encounter – the world will be a better place for it. Grace and peace, Pastor Michael http://northpoint.org/messages/five-things-god-uses-to-grow-your-faith/private-disciplines/

Children in Worship this Summer

Children’s Church will be suspended for the summer until August 12th. We welcome children of all ages to join us in the worship services. Worshiping within the faith community provides an important piece of their spiritual development. This is a time they can observe their parents and other adults in the act of worship and enjoy an opportunity to practice rituals that contribute to our identity as the family of Christ.

Worship bags will be provided to equip children to create “worship art.” Worship art is anything children draw or write in response to whatever is happening in worship that day. Artist tools will be provided inside the bags so that your child can participate creatively during worship. Worship bags will be available in the hallway outside fellowship hall, on the pews in the Narthex, and in the welcome areas.

Please notice the art in Fellowship Hall and the Sanctuary. Take a moment to talk to the children about their drawings.

Intergenerational Sunday School Meeting at 10am in room 10 will continue every

Sunday morning through August 12th.

This summer we invite all children, youth, families and any other interested adults to join us as we talk about the need for water in

other countries and the lack of access in many places. We will study selected Bible stories and learn about the PCUSA mission

project; Living Waters for the World.

Each Sunday we will look at a different country—Thailand, Haiti, Ghana, Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua and Cuba—we will hear

stories from that country and get a glimpse into the daily lives of the people there, particularly the way in which they struggle to have clean, safe water to drink. There will be hands-on activities and opportunities for

working on a service project.

10:00 each Sunday. All classes are open to guests and new members! Christian Forum meets in the Westminster room. The leaders and topics rotate each week. They explore contemporary issues within a Christian context. Open Door meets in room 11B and is led by Harland Merriam. They will be studying a Crash Course on the Bible over the next six weeks. The study introduces us to Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Moses, David, Jesus, and Us. Serendipity meets in the middle conference room of the church office. Frank Wilson is leading a study on I and II Timothy.

“MUSIC NEWS”

Happy summer to everyone from your church musicians! We have a lot of members coming and going this summer and doing exciting

things. The Chancel Choir will sing in worship through July 22 at our next combined service and will then take a 3- week summer vacation break. Our last summer Chancel Choir rehearsal will be Thursday night, June 27 even thought we will be continuing to meet on Sunday mornings to rehearse for worship through 7/22. Choir rehearsals for any interested folks will resume on Thursday, August 16, with our first Sunday back in worship on August 19. Meanwhile, service music will be provided by soloists and other combinations of special musicians. Handbells will be continued on and off during July based on availability of our ringers and will be on a TBA notice for now. We have an exciting opportunity to participate on August 18 in a Handbell Workshop at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Debary—3 members attended this workshop last year and it was fun and rewarding. If anyone is interested in trying out handbells, this is a great opportunity; please get in touch with me if so. We were sad to lose four of our scholarship student singers from Stetson as they graduated and are moving on to the next step in their journeys. The choir will be joined by some new faces to replace them and I will introduce them to you all in the September First Press.

items need to be in by the Sunday before the first Thursday of the month. Volunteers are always welcome—we always feed between 80 and 100 people. Preparation begins on Thursday, July 5th, at 3:00 pm and serving begins at 5:30 pm. We will serve hotdogs and hamburgers. Keeping You in the Know. . . The apartment has been readied for a new family and we are expectantly waiting to find out who they will be. A special thank you to the Tutts, Foersters, LaPides, Mocioleks, Grose/Williams, and Lucketts for setting a world record for bed-making and wipe-down. They cleaned the bathroom and kitchen, made eight bunks, and dusted and vacuumed in one hour and fifteen minutes!!!

Also a special thank you to the Lydia Circle for providing essentials for an almost 3-month-old who is living with her young father in one of the other apartments. The baby arrived in a diaper. . .and is now comfortably clothed and supplied so she will be able to start day-care this week.

The five apartments in Daytona that were flooded and destroyed by hurricane Irma have finally been approved for occupancy. Pray for the families who begin moving in immediately! They will be starting out with everything new. . .What a wonderful way to begin a new way of life. . .

Tithing at work

(This was received by our Mission Team Elder, Mary Hoffmann)

Hi Mary,

Natalie and I have been busy with some major life transitions and traveling, but I wanted to make sure to send my huge thanks to you, the mission team, and all of First Pres for all of the support the past 3 years at seminary: After three years in Atlanta, I have finished my Master of Divinity degree at Candler School of Theology! This time has been an incredible experience full of challenges, lessons, joys, and great friendships. I’m very grateful for the financial support that you have been able to provide toward my education. I have always felt love and support of my calling from this congregation, and I couldn’t have made it through Candler without it.

In a couple of days I will begin my first job post-seminary as the pastor of two churches in Lakeland, FL. Natalie and I are both very excited to be living back in Florida where we are closer to so many friends and family. I am currently in the ordination process in the United Methodist Church, and, while I am now in a different denomination, I will always remember First Pres as my home church where I first found my faith and began to understand my calling to ministry. Regardless of denomination, I fully believe that as Christians we are working together to participate in the presence of the kingdom of God that is all around us.

Thank you again for all of your support, and, although I won’t have many Sundays off, I hope I can come visit from time to time.

Many thanks and much love, Ian Campbell

Why are we increasing our use of social media? Social media is an easy way to reach people--it can be a tool for evangelism, a way to reach people where they are. Social media can also be a tool for discipleship, for teaching, and for sharing the gospel with others—it’s a way to share who we

are as a church and who we are becoming in Christ. Social media is a way to build community and to build relationships with others in our church family and beyond. It’s also an easy

way to invite others to events and activities happening at the church. Social media provides us practice in what we learned from our study, Living the Five -- “we can’t do life alone” and “found

people find people.” Facebook provides us with another way to invite others on this journey.
