internationalization

July-December 2015

Merida, Yucatan, November 3, 2015-. With the participa-tion of 550 delegates from 53 countries, the 14th Interna-tional Symposium on Veteri-nary Epidemiology and Eco-nomics (ISVEE 14) started on the 3rd of November in the city of Merida. It is im-portant to emphasize that this is the first time the symposi-um takes place on Mexican soil, being hosted by the Au-tonomous University of Yu-catan (UADY by its Spanish acronym). For five days the academics and researchers discussed the future of veterinary epidemi-ology and economics through workshops, oral and poster presentations, graduate stu-dent competition, panel dis-cussions and lectures. Inau-gurating the event, Raul Go-doy Montañez, State Secre-tary for Research, Innovation and Higher Education, said that "we need leaders to take decisions according to the available information and science".

In his speech he emphasized that the state governor, Rolando Zapata Bello, is clear that health is a global issue, “We cannot understand it as an issue of farms, ranches or micro regions, but as a phenomenon gener-ated by the mobili-ty of the human and animal popu-lations and also by environmental risk factors.” Accompanied by Jose de Jesús Williams, rector of UADY, and Alfredo Dájer Abimerhi, State Secretary of Administration and Finance and chairman of the or-ganizing committee ISVEE 14, Godoy Montañez said that the government of Yucatán looks forward, "with the vision that you have and is aware of climate change using everything in their power to mitigate them." He emphasized that Yucatán is an entity that is privileged with a high health status and therefore "are the third largest producing

state of pork, a figure that is currently being dupli-cated, and also occupies the first place as a producer of turkey, and in egg chick-en production

there are new major invest-ments. That is why the gover-nor is very interested in what you discuss at this symposium, because the health status of the entity is allowing these large investments that keep coming and at the same time impose risks, given the growth in di-verse populations" he said. During the ceremony, awards instituted at the event of the Netherlands three years ago were given for the first time, at the initiative of Roger Morris. The awards, presented by Dr. Godoy Montañez, were for doctors John MacDermott, Ian Dohoo and Charles Caraguel. Seated as well at the presidium during the opening ceremony were Arjan Stegeman, presi-dent of the International Com-mittee of ISVEE 14; Dr. Jorge Hernandez de Anda, president of the scientific committee and Marco Antonio Torres Leon, director of the Faculty of Vet-erinary Medicine and Animal Science UADY.

grams that are recognized for its quality in existing national schemes for evaluation and accreditation," said the rector Williams, who also cited as a key element "that the UADY is a center of national and in-ternational reference in scien-

tific, humanistic, technological and cultural development, characterized by significant contributions to the advance-ment of knowledge and care of problems that affect the sustainable and harmonious human development Yucatan". After emphasizing the high degree of recognition and so-cial position of the institution at the national and internation-al levels, Dr. Jose Williams said that "our educational pro-grams reflect the work of the university community."

He said that the recognition of CONACYT is related to six of the twelve priority programs at UADY: Expansion and diver-sification of educational op-portunities; Relevance of the curriculum; Implementation, monitoring and evaluation of

MEFI; Strengthen-ing faculty and aca-demic bodies; Sys-tem development of the graduate pro-gram and research; and Internationaliza-tion of university functions. The graduate pro-grams that received recognition from CONACYT are: specialization in En-dodontics, Restora-tive Dentistry, Den-

tomaxilofacial Orthodontics and Orthopedics and Clinical Biochemistry. Also, the Mas-ters in Chemistry and Bio-chemistry, Computer Science, Health Research and Applied Psychology. And finally, PhDs in Engineering, Health Sciences, Social Sciences, In-ter-institutional on Habitat Sciences and Anthropology.

Merida, Yucatan, September 28, 2015-With the delivery of separate accreditations, the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) recognized the quality stand-ards of 13 graduate programs of the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY). Thus, the graduate programs from UADY-four spe-cializations four masters and five doctorates consoli-date its presence in the National Quality Graduate Program (PNPC) of CONA-CYT. In the cere-mony, Dr. Jose de Jesus Williams, rec-tor of the UADY, congratulated the coordinators, aca-demics and students and rec-ognized the difficulty and complexity for entering the PNPC, and he emphasized, even more so being consistent with quality and improving every day. "These awards are the result of the strategic goals set by the UADY," said the rector, high-lighting, among the essential factors for achievement, hav-ing extensive and diversified educational offerings in high school, undergraduate and graduate programs. "We talked about relevant pro-

Yaxunah, Yucatan, August 26, 2015.- Participants of the Third Forum of Territorial Responsibility visited Yaxunah to learn about what academics and students from the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY) do in the towns within the state. Over one hundred profes-sionals and specialists from 17 countries present at the forum, accompanied by exec-utives, academics and stu-dents from UADY, partici-pated in workshops on as-tronomy and Mayan worldview, creating stories, the plate of good food, the cornfield, traditional medi-cine, water and cenotes, and technological solutions for renewable energy in rural communities, among others. In addition to this quaint little town, with less than a thou-sand inhabitants, the work-shops were also held in Kankabzdonot and Popola, both populations of the Yaxcabá Township. "Thank you for being here today, for giving us the op-portunity to witness what our academics and students do in the communities in the interi-or of the state," said Dr. Wil-liams in his message to the audience. "As a public university, we know that we owe to society, and in this sense we want to say that, for years, we have worked the Social Projects in

Learning Communities", the rector said to the congressmen, and immediately stressed that "what we do here and in other communities within the state goes hand in hand with the people who decide their priori-ties and what needs to be done; our role is to accompany and guide them, exchanging knowledge and wisdom". He also said that "the training goes beyond the professional, it has to do with solidarity, commitment, respect and eth-ics; all of us in this world are brothers, therefore, we must not only worry but take care, accompany and support each other". Javier Becerril Garcia, general coordinator of the Graduate System Research and Linking at UADY, told the forum par-ticipants that from 2013 to 2015, a total of 360 scholars and more than 1, 500 students have worked in rural areas. He said that in the case of young

people they have done it as a social service, internships and/or volunteer work. He explained that this uni-versity dynamic now covers 22 locations in 16 municipal-ities and involves 7,600 in-habitants. To fulfill this pur-pose, he added, UADY in addition to their own re-sources, is funded by the Kellogg Foundation for 18 projects; the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on 7 more projects; and the state Department of Social Development (SEDESOL) in three devel-opment agencies.
