Many years later, with a successful international career as a jazz and cabaret artist, Caroline returns to her American musical influences in this specially devised concert for Melbourne Recital Centre giving her unique interpretations of American songwriters including Patti Smith, Lou Reed and, of course, France’s adopted own great American artiste Nina Simone.

Alice Sara Ott & Francesco Tristano Piano Duo – The Rite of SpringIndividually, Alica Sara Ott and Francesco Tristano are two of their generation’s brightest young stars. Together, they are a pianistic dream team. At 24, Ott already has major repertoire on record and a busy international schedule, giving performances that critics call

‘elegant’, ‘vibrant’ and ‘superbly accomplished’. The combination of the two promises a meeting of strong minds and spectacular playing that is already generating buzz. The music they have chosen is bold and big: orchestral epics rendered on two pianos. Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring was transcribed for piano duo by the composer

Alisa Weilerstein makes an unforgettable impression. The immense, impassioned sound she creates and her body and soul commitment to the music have astonished audiences around the world. Her recent electrifying performance of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No.1 with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra left audiences stunned and calling for more. Still in her early-30s, Weilerstein already has a stellar career, been the recipient of the prestigious MacArthur ‘Genius’ fellowship, and recorded the Elgar Cello Concerto under the authoritative baton of Daniel Barenboim, in addition to an intense concert schedule. After convincing her parents to buy her a cello at the age of four, she made her public concert debut six months later, her debut with the Cleveland Orchestra at 13 and her Carnegie Hall debut two years later. Weilerstein has performed with Australian orchestras several times, but this is your first chance to hear her solo. Bach’s C major cello suite demonstrates Weilerstein’s gift for shaping a single line into a thing of dancing grace, while Kodály’s richly-textured masterpiece gives the cellist scope to showcase her intensity, virtuosity and expressive gifts.

Syzygy Ensemble explores the concept of music as a persuasive tool, music as passionate argument. The works in Rhetoric range from Ives’ last violin sonata, which invokes the religious fervour of evangelical hymns in order to both pay homage to and mock the church-goers of his day, through to the very

recently composed Old Kings in Exile by Brett Dean. This moving work evokes a plea for the continuity of memory of those we have lost, and details the harrowing challenges faced by the dying.

Choir of King's College, Cambridge

Since the 15th century, the vaulted arches of the chapel at King’s College, Cambridge have helped shape the distinctively pure tone of this special choir. Acknowledged as the peak of choral excellence in the great British tradition, the boys and men of the Choir share their uniquely beautiful vocal timbre in an unmissable selection of favourite classics and sparkling new repertoire. In this concert, the Choir performs works by Byrd, Palestrina, Purcell, Monteverdi, Britten, Vine and more.

The peak of choral excellence in the great British tradition.

Composed in two weeks, from his sick-bed after his return from concerts at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, The Holy Sonnets of John Donne pulsate with a hatred of war. The committed pacifist, Britten’s monumental cycle addresses questions of faith in a world tortured by the death and misery of war. And like Donne, Britten’s cycle does see the possibility of redemption and salvation. Acclaimed chamber music duo Eidit Golder and Michael Smallwood are joined by their

Buster Keaton’s The General‘An inspired fusion of cinema and performance that never fails to delight… Blue Grassy Knoll are a national treasure.’ The Guardian

Never Say FarewellThe story of the Farewell Symphony is the stuff of musical legend. Frustrated with Prince Nikolaus Esterházy’s drawn-out stay at his summer palace, Haydn composed a fiery new symphony with a strong musical hint: in the final movement, the musicians gradually left the stage, until only two remained. The Prince got the message: the court returned to the city the very next day. Young bassoonist Jack Schiller is a remarkable talent whose passionate musicality has already won him many fans. He joins the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra for this concert to perform Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto, a rarely-heard gem with which he recently made his debut with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

A musical legend and a fiery new symphony

‘Emotional music of stark beauty using vulnerable tactile sounds.’

Blue Grassy Knoll

Returning to Melbourne Recital Centre with a brand new score, home-town favourites Blue Grassy Knoll are joined by the Australian Silent Film Orchestra to present one of the greatest silent comedies ever produced, Buster Keaton’s The General, as you’ve never heard it before. The General has been critically hailed as a comedic masterpiece and is undoubtedly the best train film ever made. The Civil War adventure-epic was made toward the end of the silent era and is filled with hilarious sight gags and perfectly timed stunt work, all perfectly underscored by Blue Grassy Knoll’s creative sound world of music and effects.

Mostly Mozart – A French Connection

Jean-Philippe Rameau was one of the most important French composers of the Baroque era. His Les Indes galantes, termed an opéra-ballet, is a delicious song and dance spectacle exhibiting the French flair for colour and movement. Rameau’s French compatriots Jean Baptiste Lully and Cécile Chaminade add to this rich musical bouillabaisse with works that will transport you to continental Europe. Chaminade’s Concertino for flute and orchestra is considered fiendishly difficult with a highly decorative solo part that is quite demanding for the soloist and Mozart’s flute concerto with its unassuming grace, imaginative workmanship and expressive power is equally challenging. Mozart exhibited a special affinity with the woodwind family, writing prolifically for the instruments throughout his lifetime. The G–major Concerto is a stand-out work with its delectable melody and elegance.

The New Palm Court Orchestra with Craig BeardMelbourne’s own virtuoso jazz vibraphonist Craig Beard joins The New Palm Court Orchestra (NPCO) for a vibrant concert of colour and warmth. Beard is a mesmerising performer and improviser, best known for his work with jazz ensemble Frock. He also featured on The New Palm Court Orchestra’s debut album Landscapes for a Mind’s Eye. The NPCO is a nine-piece chamber orchestra which brings together some of Melbourne’s best jazz, classical and improvising musicians. This concert features a selection of new compositions by the NPCO’s Artistic Director, pianist/composer Gemma Turvey.

From My LifePoignant and lyrical, Quartz string quartet performs a program of great emotional depth. Czech composer Bedřich Smetana wrote his string quartet, From My Life in 1876 as an expression of his romantic ideals of a life in music. Comprising sketches of periods from his life, the work sways between feelings of joy and idealism and wistful reflections of youth to fragile moments of realisation as Smetana accepted his deafness. Australian composer and soprano Shauna Beesley recently composed a profoundly moving work taking Russian modernist writer, Anna Akhmatova’s poem Requiem as her text. Written between 1935 and 1940, the poem Requiem is a lyrical cycle of elegy, lamentation and witness, which Akhmatova wrote, worked and re-worked in secret, depicting the suffering of the common people under the Stalinist terror regime.

LOCAL HEROES 2014BoundlessThree masterpieces, from arguably the three greatest composers for the string quartet performed by the Australian String Quartet. Haydn’s Op.77, No.1 is the grand, crowning achievement of a life inventing, exploring and perfecting the genre. Written 10 years later, in Beethoven’s middle period, the Serioso quartet is all fire and crystal whilst remaining compositionally one of the strictest and most tightly structured works he ever wrote. In Bartók’s Quartet No.5 we hear the master of the 20th century quartet adding another dimension of emotional depth to his already highly sharpened, perfectly constructed middle period works. Ever since its first

Lies You Can Believe InCaroline Henbest (viola) and Edith Salzmann (cello) join members of Sutherland Trio, Caroline Almonte (piano) and Elizabeth Sellers (violin), for music inspired by great literature. The famous fairy tale ‘Cinderella’ is the basis for Prokofiev’s magnificent ballet score from which the beautiful Adagio for cello is taken. Folk music, both urban and regional can be traced in Brahms Piano Quartet Op.60 and Missy Mazzoli’s Lies You Can Believe In, which explores the intricacies of an embellished story. The poetry of Robert Burns lives on in Armstrong’s beautiful rendition of My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose.

Debussy said that his 12 studies were only for pianists with ‘remarkable hands’. Fortunately, Nicolas Hodges possesses them. These late masterpieces are a distillation of Debussy’s revolutionary techniques, demanding that pianists transcend their instrument and themselves to create unimagined sonorities. They are also examples of Debussy’s sly wit and pop cultural interests: full of waltzes, jazz, Spanish guitars and parody. In short, they’re the perfect vehicles for a pianist like Nicolas Hodges, whose own wide-ranging tastes encompass everything from Beethoven to brand new works, often in the same concert.

Hodges has stunned audiences with his skill and his ability to communicate in the most challenging of new music and his insights into the core piano repertoire. Common to all his performances is a desire to cross centuries

Tognetti in Recital

Pianist Steven Osborne’s recent concerts with the Australian Chamber Orchestra were hailed as ‘the most thrilling musical memory of the entire 2012 season’ (The Australian), ‘an evening of pure delight’ (West Australian) and ‘a ripsnorter of a performance’ (News Local) so it’s no surprise Richard Tognetti chose Osborne to partner in this rare and intimate recital. Together they perform three violin sonatas; Prokofiev’s virtuosic and lyrical showpiece, Debussy’s powerful last-ever completed work, and the final and most reflective of Beethoven’s violin sonatas. The concert opens with Prokofiev’s lyrical and graceful melodies and Fratres, described by Tognetti as ‘Arvo Pärt at his instrumental best.’

and continents to illuminate old and new repertoire with surprising juxtapositions demonstrating even more surprising parities. In this case, it is the late works of Beethoven and Debussy. The late sonatas of Beethoven are a radical redefinition of the form: freewheeling, philosophical and sublime, they are endlessly fascinating musical mazes. In the second movement of the Op.111 Sonata Beethoven transcends time itself, with a set of celestial variations that resound into infinity. Beethoven regarded his sketch-like Six Bagatelles, Op.126 as the best he had written, and there are tantalising hints of his most innovative works. Hiding behind the deadpan facade of Debussy’s Études are worlds of colour and invention as imaginative as anything he ever wrote, so that even as pianists are perfecting their octaves, they are learning how to dream.

The Quartet premiere a newly commissioned work by Grabowsky based on Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose, and pair it with Schubert’s String Quartet in A minor, which uses themes from his previous compositions based on the play, Rosamunde. Using Bach’s two part inventions as a starting point, Grabowsky then performs the original solo piano score, followed by Kats-Chernin’s popular Re-Inventions for recorder and string quartet. Grabowsky then concludes with his intriguing musical commentary on each reinvention – by reinventing the aforementioned Re-Inventions.

A Somewhat French FantasyIn 2014, Trio Anima Mundi explores geographical and historical ideas from the 19th and 20th centuries. Both Camille Saint-Saëns and Lili Boulanger competed for the coveted Prix de Rome at various stages of their careers, but it was only Boulanger who won the title in 1913 at the age of 19. Her early demise at the age of 24 resulted in a relatively small output and her Deux pièces en trio was one of her last works. In contrast, the first piano trio of Saint-Saëns was written when the composer was 28 years of age.

The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra is joined by two of the most gorgeous musicians – Marshall McGuire (period harp) and Melissa Farrow (period flute), the epitome of beauty and elegance – their feeling for fine taste, finesse and simplicity is every bit as captivating as it is accomplished. Mozart received a commission in Paris to compose a double concerto for flute and harp for the Comte de Guines. De Guines was a favourite of Marie Antoinette and a fine flautist. With its poetic, serene second movement and glorious shades of colour from the rarely heard period harp, it’s no wonder this piece has become a truly beloved Mozart work. The Earth To Our Ears – Australian Guitar MusicMelbourne Guitar Quartet (MGQ) performs a retrospective of the works of two of Australia’s most respected composers: Nigel Westlake and Robert Davidson. Both have contributed superb works to guitar literature and this program celebrates their music with a selection of unique arrangements and original settings. Ambience, stillness and rhythmic drive feature heavily, using many different guitars (including steel string and dobro), percussion and Ron Murray on didgeridoo.

The legendary Borodin Quartet is living history. Approaching their 70th concert season, the Borodins return to Australia with music of great depth and emotional resonance. The printed music used by the group bears markings in Shostakovich’s own hand. Just as importantly, the Quartet’s unwritten traditions carry a unique impact that makes every concert glow with the authenticity of experience and knowledge as the players immerse themselves into the mighty ‘Borodin sound’.

The EroicaOne of Australia’s leading pianists, Kristian Chong teams up with one of Australia’s foremost violinists, Natsuko Yoshimoto for a lively program that showcases the wit, complexity and determination of Beethoven’s compositional creativity with two of the composer’s most iconic sonatas for piano and violin. The formidable and thrilling C minor Sonata (nicknamed the Eroica) is complemented by the striking Op.12 No.3 Sonata, and is contrasted with Debussy’s whimsical and colourful sonata for violin and piano.

The Animals Noah Forgot is a cabaret for Australian children taking its title and core material from the delightful publication for the young by A.B. ‘Banjo’ Paterson. Paterson’s collection of poems has served as the inspiration for a set of six songs written by respected conductor, educator and composer Noel Ancell oam (published by Morton Music). In this year celebrating the 150th anniversary of Paterson’s birth, these songs and selected poems weave together a story about Banjo’s eccentrically loveable characters, incorporating dance and movement, singing and listening activities, presented by two members of Songmakers Australia.

Engaging music, poetry and illustrations for children aged 3-10 years and their families.

Monteverdi’s creative fire burns brightest in his madrigals. Full of passion and musical invention, they are the pinnacle of an intimate yet dramatic musical genre that eventually led to the creation of opera. Award-winning Adelaide Chamber Singers (‘Grand Prix’ Musica Sacra a Roma 2013, “Choir of the World at Llangollen 2013”) presents Monteverdi’s Fire – a music-theatre presentation of Monteverdi’s complete Sixth Book of Madrigals devised by opera director Andy Packer and conductor Carl Crossin.
