IN OUR THOUGHTS

FAMILY LIVING REPORT

Dear HCE members, The warm weather has finally graced us with its pres-ence! Summer is in full swing! People are out and about embracing Wisconsin’s current season! There have been sail boats on the lake, swimmers in the water, and picnickers in the park! It’s great that Wisconsin has four seasons for its resi-dents to enjoy. The warm weather brings food safety to the forefront. The Center for Disease Control estimates 1 in 6 Ameri-cans (roughly 48 million people) gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die annually due to foodborne diseases. There are a few simple steps that can be tak-en to enjoy the warm weather and keep food safe when including snacks and meals in your outdoor activ-ities. When packing both food and beverages, use sep-arate coolers. People tend to open and close the cool-er most for beverages. By having a cooler designated for beverages, your food cooler will see less activity and be able to hold its temperature longer. Keeping the food cooler colder longer reduces the risk of bacterial growth. It’s also a good idea to have some of the food frozen or partially frozen when packing it into the cool-er, this along with ice packs, will help the cooler stay cold longer. Placing an appliance thermometer in the cooler will also help you be sure the food stays at a safe temperature, 40°F or below. Packing the cooler full will also help maintain a safe temperature longer than one that is partially filled. One last tip, keep raw meat and poultry wrapped separately and away from cooked foods or snacks that will be eaten raw. Here’s to a safe and enjoyable summer!

Sincerely,

Paula M. Hella

Stitches of Love began in 2002 and is sponsored by Wisconsin County Home and Consumer Education. The organiza-tion originally started by Janet Hansen is now led by coordinator Lynn Mozingo who holds four workshops in Oshkosh and two in Calumet County each year with a total of 35 volunteers partici-pating. Every spring and fall, Mozingo meets with volunteers in the UW-Extension office at the Calumet County Courthouse where they spend the day working as a team to make various items that are donated to four different cancer centers in the Fox Valley. Last year's efforts saw a total of over 2,200 hats donated. On May 19 the Calumet County volunteer group met for their spring work day where they created over 200 pill box hats and kerchiefs. Participating in this spring's event was Karen Rubin, Diane Ecker and Lillian Ecker all of Stockbridge and Pat Buechel and Diane Sattler of Chilton. Additional volunteers are always welcome as well as donated fabric. Mozingo can be reached at (920) 428-6947 for more information.
