ON THE COVERThe Golf Team looks forward to seeing you soon at Torresdale.

Dear Fellow League Members,

Flag Day is one of our many American holidays that has its origin in Philadelphia It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress This year, The Union League celebrated Flag Day, and also the Army Birthday, by welcoming U S Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas to a tribute luncheon and to receive our Lincoln Award. A special thanks to Rear Admiral (ret ) Joseph Hare and the Armed Services Council for ar-ranging a patriotic recognition of the flag that represents our nation, its values, and all our citizens

The Foundations have also dedicated a new plaque for the Hall of Honor, where we will recognize all members who have served, or are serving, in the armed forces This plaque will reside next to our other plaques that honor the past military service of our members near the Broad Street entrance

While we have taken time this month to celebrate our nation, the flag that represents it, and our members and soldiers who have pro-tected it, we also pause to celebrate the almost 50 children and grandchildren of members who have graduated from college this month! Taking full advantage of the great opportuni-ties presented in our free society, for which education is the foundation, is also an expres-sion of love of country and appreciation for all who have made these opportunities possible

Next month, we will welcome Archbishop Charles Chaput from the Archdiocese of Phila-delphia who will discuss the upcoming visit of Pope Francis as part of the World Meeting of Families This historic visit of the Pope comes amidst concerns of an increasingly narcissistic culture and degradation of the fundamental societal social unit: the nuclear family

If you have not yet gone, part of our summer tradition is our weekly Lobster Night on Thurs-days These sumptuous feasts are a favorite and will continue until a final grand feast on August 27 in Lincoln Hall!

Golf is off to a busy start at Torresdale, as has usage of the pool Construction continues to make progress on the historic clubhouse for our projected late summer opening The reviews have been outstanding! Thanks to the team under the leadership of Sandee Cataldi, Club Manager, Sean Palmer, Director of Golf, Ann Markowitz, Director of Membership and Private Events and Ed Vadden, Executive Chef

For members at the shore, The Bungalow has been busy, with the addition of Sunday brunch and live music on Tuesday nights beginning July 7 We now have Bungalow beach towels for sale at the League House and The Bungalow! Look out for Bungalow wine totes coming soon

See you at the League!

LIBRARY HOUR City Abandoned: Charting the Loss of Civic Institutions in Philadelphia

With the photographs in this book, Vincent Feld-man offers Philadelphians a testament of who we were, who we are, and who we are likely to become Some of his subjects have succumbed to neglect or demolition (the Ridge Avenue Farmers’ Market); some have been successfully rehabilitated to new uses (the Victory Building); while others remain in limbo in their ruined states – their futures far from

secure “Feldman is not the kind of photographer who shoots and runs An old-school craftsman, he uses a large-format view camera much like the one Mathew Brady hauled around to record the devastation of the Civil War Feldman then retreats to the darkroom to print his images on paper, rendering them with such precision that bricks and stones appear to leap from the page in three-dimensional relief,” said Inga Saffron, Phila-delphia Inquirer. Feldman is a lifelong resident of Philadelphia His work is held in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and in museums and private collections internationally He is a Master Lecturer in photography at the University of the Arts Copies of the book will be available for purchase When: Thursday, August 6

The Real Watergate Scandal; Collusion, Conspiracy, and the Plot to Bring Nixon Down

An aging judge about to step down Aggressive prosecutors friendly with the judge A disgraced president A nation that had already made up its mind The Watergate trials were a legal mess, and now, with the discovery of new documents that reveal shocking misconduct by prosecutors and judges alike, former Nixon staffer and Union League member Geoff Shepard has a convincing case that

the wrongdoing of these history-making trials was actually a bigger scandal than the Watergate scandal itself Shepard is a lawyer best known for his work on the Nixon White House staff and his subsequent efforts to document policy initiatives of the Nixon administration Copies of the book will be available for purchase When: Wednesday, September 16

A Special Library Hour with Cokie Roberts in partnership with The Museum of the American RevolutionWednesday, July 29 at 6:00pm

In this engrossing and informative companion to her New York Times bestsellers Founding Mothers and Ladies of Liberty, Cokie Roberts marks the sesquicentennial of the Civil War by offering a riveting look at Washington, D.C. and the experiences, influence, and contributions of its women. VOLUME 2 [ NUMBER 7 [ JULY – AUGUST 2015

A MESSAGE from CLUB MANAGER SANDEE CATALDIWe were honored to

have Miss Haussman hit the first official shot off the first tee for the opening day of the golf

course on May 28. Charlie Seravalli, Dan Jones, Michael Cole, Tom Holt, Jr. and Ken Rodgers, our Torresdale/Union League Board, were also in attendance and hit ceremonial shots.

There has been a lot of positive feedback from our members who are using the pool. We have a limited but

tasty menu, which has been created by Chef Ed Vadden for the “Poolside Café.”

The weather was very good to us this past Friday, which helped make the Nine and Dine a great success. We had 50 members participate, who graciously expressed that the service and menu were over and above their expectations.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest Torresdale members who have now joined The

Union League: Joseph C. Beres, MD, Francis Carroll, Angelo M. DiBello, MD, Eric T. Holt, Dominic J. Marziani, Daniel McDade, John J. Siliquini, MD and Richard Vanni, MD.

Please check the website for upcoming events at Torresdale. We look forward to seeing you.

Please feel free to call or email me with any concerns or questions you may have.

a busy place this past month! Since we opened on May 28, over 2,000 rounds of golf have been

played at Torresdale. Members and their guests have given rave reviews for the newly restored Donald Ross golf course and our crew is continually improving every aspect of Torresdale on a daily basis.

To date over 490 different members have accessed our website over 6,000 times to book tee times, instruction,

or register for golf events. My staff has enjoyed teaching a wide variety of Union League members that are new to the game, and some who just want to fine tune their swings to lower their scores. We have started things at Torresdale with fantastic momentum and things will not slow down any time soon!

Please come and enjoy the newest and most popular amenity of the Union League!

intimidating. Our beautiful course at the Union League Golf Club at Torres-dale has variety that can accommodate players of all types. FROM the CADDIE YARD with CADDIE MASTERS JESSE CORBETT and ED WEBSTERWe are almost one month into our

new golf season at the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale. The support for the caddie program has been very positive! We have had a staggering amount of caddie requests in these first few weeks, after re-launching the

caddie program. The average daily caddie usage has tripled compared to last season!

We are focusing on mentoring young students from the area schools and the community to represent our caddie program. Establishing a caddie program can have challenges when training young people, however the willingness of the membership to assist us in the process has been overwhelmingly supportive so far in this new season. Thank you so much for supporting the caddie program!

Are you interested in using a caddie for your next round? Here are some of the basics when requesting caddies for your round. When reserving a tee time in Foretees use the “CDY” selection when choosing your mode of transportation. Would you prefer to ride instead of walking? No worries - we have you covered! Just choose the Forecaddie option “CFC.” Using a

Forecaddie can be extremely helpful to assist in spotting balls, raking bunkers, club selection and maintaining a good pace of play. Just think if you are entertaining clients or friends the positive impact a caddie can have in making your round more enjoyable.

2015 Suggested Caddie Rates• Honor Caddie (Red Cap)

$65.00 per bag plus tip• Intermediate Caddie (Blue Cap)

$55.00 per bag plus tip• Beginner Caddie (Grey Cap)

$45.00 per bag plus tip• Forecaddie $30.00 per bag plus tip

All caddies must be paid in cash after the conclusion of each round.

Thanks for supporting the caddie program at The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected] or [email protected].
