July 9, 2020 Slide 19

Limitations of the model

A setup purely based on direct OCPP integration leads to higher investments & higher operational cost. It also limits the remote service possibilities for the service team of the operator and ABB – leading to lower uptime.

Operator back-office, B2C applications

Standard protocol (OCPP)

Operator managed connectivity

Customer needs dedicated operation to monitor & manage the connectivity

24/7 with limited economies of scale (SIM cost, …)

Limited possibilities for remote diagnostics & configuration due to

limitations in the protocol leading to more on-site delegations

Expensive back office platform as it must cover all B2C use cases (payment, user management...) and be fully scalable to connect large network and cover all features for asset monitoring & service

Unclear responsibility in case of connectivity issues – HW supplier (modem) or operator (GSM provider)?

Page 20: JULY 8, 2020 | ELECTRIFICATION LIVE WEBINAR ... - ABB Group

—Digital integration of an ABB EV charger

July 9, 2020 Slide 20

Benefits

Combine benefits of EVCI platform with direct OCPP setup

In case of a multi-brand network with AC and DC chargers, apply one OCPP connectivity model for all chargers in the network

Details

Available on HPC, on Terra 54 and on AC, DC-Wallbox

Only for OCPP 1.6 and 2.0 (using JSON via websockets)

Both communication channels use the same internet connection (either SIM or Ethernet) to send data to the two different end points

The IT setup for dual-uplink is more complicated for the operator than in a “platform-to-platform” setup using the internet based OCPP API:

– Customer needs to ensure scalability of the IT platform (number of connected chargers)

– Customer must manage/ monitor the websocket and the M2M communication to ensure OCPP communication

– Customer must implement redundancy & failover mechanisms for live maintenance on own platform and gateway

Same commercial model as in cloud to cloud setup (Charger Connect plus OCPP API)

Dual Uplink Option – Combining direct OCPP with the benefits of the ABB EVCI platform

Payment model

Membership model (with authentication) Payment terminal

How it works EV Driver is registered as a member in the back-office of the operator.

The member can choose from various pricing and payment models

To start charging, the driver is authenticating himself via RFID/PIN/App.

The operator checks the member data, approves and allows charging process to start.

EV Driver is not registered as a member.

Payment upfront per charging session, or per use (kWh / time)

To start charging, the driver is required to swipe the credit card/ NFC device

The credit card of the driver is checked by the terminal and allows charging process to start.

Requirements OCPP integration (OCPP V1.6 via Dual Uplink)

Operators back office system must support membership management and billing process

Payment terminal and web module for payment

Commercial agreement between credit card acquirer and operator

Pros Flexibility to adapt business/ pricing model (e.g. flat rate, certain users charge for free, peak hours etc..)

Connect with other offerings

Operator can use membership model as a “lock-in effect” for the EV drivers

Anyone with a credit card can use the charger, user experience similar to getting petrol

No membership management and back-end payment system needed

Cons Client needs to register as member

Operator needs to setup the backend process including membershipmanagement, billing process

Operator cannot benefit from a “lock-in effect” for the EV drivers (no membership)

Price and servicing the HW on the charger
