Many years ago, there was a very popular Christian poster that did nothing but list names for God from the scriptures. While it included powerful names like “Lion of Judah” and “Wonderful Counselor,” as a whole it was a sharp contrast to the simple and beautiful images present in our scriptures today. The prophet Zechariah prefigures the Christ coming in meekly and mildly on an ass—the vision we might have of Palm Sunday. In Romans Saint Paul reveals to us our truer selves, calling us to embrace the Spirit of Christ, put aside our fleshly beings, and live more fully in Christ. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus bypasses the learned, and God reveals things to the childlike. We are presented with a simple, straightforward approach to God, and to finding God.

OUR COMPLICATED LIVES We live in an age and a society that has never been more educated or had a higher standard of living, yet never have we carried as much debt. Many are living beyond their means. We have so many resources and time-saving devices at our hands, yet our lives are more complex than ever. While many people may not engage in extreme manual labor we rarely escape our jobs. Many are connected through phones and constantly receive calls, texts, and emails. Others spend hours in traffic on their daily commutes or pack on the frequent flyer miles. We spend hours binge-watching our favorite shows. Many children are accustomed to being in front of a screen all the time and no longer know how to play creatively. The statistics for those who continue to leave the Church and all forms of organized religion also continue to rise. While there is no such thing as a “good old days” to return to, there was something to be said for sleeping soundly after putting in a good day’s work, and for a family gathering around the table for a shared meal. For many, this model for eucharist rarely exists. Jesus knows and feels our pains, and calls out, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”

IT’S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE So how do we declutter? Downsize? Devote ourselves again to Christ and live out our gospel calling? Sign up for a liturgical ministry, or volunteer to help with a religion program. Join a small faith group. Volunteer at a food pantry or Habitat for Humanity. Become involved as an individual, or a family. Meanwhile, back at the house, make a commitment to go through one drawer a day, and take things to your local St. Vinnie’s or secondhand store. Remember meal and bedtime prayers. Find a minute to read the daily scriptures. Take many baby steps. It’s not rocket science. It is a continual commitment to bring ourselves as we are, and to respond to Jesus’ call to “Come.”

ST. MARIA GORETTI (July 6)

Does anything match a mother’s pride in her children? First Commun-ions, confirmations, gradu-ations, weddings: how these delight a mother’s heart! Imagine, then, Assunta Gor-etti, the only mother ever to attend her child’s canon-ization! In poverty-stricken rural Italy, widowed Assunta tended fields for the Serenelli family, whose eighteen-year-old son, Alessandro, propos-itioned her barely twelve-year-old Maria; then, when she resisted, crying, “It is a sin! God forbids it!” he stabbed her fourteen times. As she lay dying, Maria assured the attending priest, “Yes, I forgive Alessandro! I want him to be in Paradise with me someday.” Imprisoned, unrepentant, Alessandro changed after dreaming that a radiant Maria had offered him fourteen lilies. “I’ve kept my promise,” she smiled. “You’ll be here with me someday.” Upon release, he rushed to beg Assunta’s forgiveness. “Jesus has forgiven you,” she replied, “my Maria, too. How can I refuse?” Next morning, mother and murderer walked arm in arm to church and knelt side by side for Communion.

St. Raphael, a powerful healer for anyone suffering right now Among the three archangels named in the Bible, St. Raphael is probably the least known. This is likely due to the fact that St. Raphael is only found in the Old Tes-tament (and there, only in a book not considered canoni-cal by Jews or Protestant Christians), while Gabriel and Michael feature prominently in the New Testament. In the Book of Tobit, he reveals himself as a healer of mind, body and spirit. The first part of the biblical story narrates the life of Tobit, a righteous Jewish man who took upon himself the burial of the dead even when it was forbidden by his Assyrian captors. Tobit became blind after bird droppings fell into his eyes. The blind-ness lasted for several years and sent Tobit into a deep anguish, creating in him a desire to die. At the same time there was a woman named Sarah who was tormented by a demon. She married seven times, but each time her bridegroom was killed by the demon on their wedding night, before the marriage could be consummated. She too was deeply depressed and wished for death. St. Raphael was sent to both. He brought about their healing by accompanying Tobit’s son, Tobias, on a journey to find a special kind of fish liver with healing properties. Raphael was disguised as Tobias’ travel guide, and in this tradition he is often invoked by pilgrims.On the way back home, Raphael and Tobias stopped at the home of Tobit’s kinsmen — the parents of Sarah. Tobias and Sarah fell in love, and on their wedding night Tobias’ pledge of chaste love, stirred by Raphael’s angelic power, defeated the demon. Returning home with his bride, Tobias laid the fish liver on Tobit’s eyes and his blindness was healed. At the marriage feast of Tobias and Sarah, the family turned to thank Raphael, who only then revealed himself as an archangel. The word Raphael in Hebrew can be rendered as “God heals,” “Divine Healer,” or “Remedy of God.” His angelic mission on earth is to heal, which is very important for those suffering in any way. Traditionally, he had a sep-arate feast celebrated on October 24, though recently his feast was combined with those of the other two arch-angels on September 29.Below is a prayer to St. Rapha-el for any intention you may have, especially for anyone you know who may be hurting right now. In light of re-cent events, all of us should pray for the healing of our country, and all those suffering in mind, body or spirit. Glorious Archangel St. Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, you are illustrious for your gifts of wis-dom and grace. You are a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, consoler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners. I beg you, assist me in all my needs and in all the sufferings of this life, as once you helped the young Tobias on his travels. Because you are the “medicine of God” I humbly pray you to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body. I especially ask of you the favor (here mention your special intention), and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the tem-ple of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

KUTAK ZA RAZMIŠLJANJE Što smo to učinili sa životom? Paradoks našeg vremena je da imamo veće zgrade, ali kraće živce; šire puteve, ali uže vidike; trošimo više, a imamo manje; kupujemo više, uživamo manje... Imamo veće kuće, a manje obitelji; više udobnos , a manje vremena; imamo više diploma, ali manje razuma; više znanja, a manje rasuđivanja; više stručnjaka, a još više problema; više znanja u medicini, a sve manje zdravlja. Pijemo previše, pušimo previše, trošimo nepromišljeno, smijemo se premalo, vozimo prebrzo, olako se lju mo, prekasno liježemo, ustajemo umorni, čitamo nedovoljno, gledamo TV previše. Molimo se rijetko. Uvećali smo naše posjede, ali smo umanjili naše vrijednos . Previše pričamo, premalo volimo, prečesto mrzimo. Naučili smo kako da preživljavamo, ali ne i kako živje . Dodajemo godine životu, ali ne i život godinama. Putovali smo na mjesec, a problem nam je o ći preko ulice i upozna novog susjeda. Zagospodarili smo vanjskim prostorom, ali ne i unutarnjim. Napravili smo velike, ali ne i bolje stvari. Očis li smo zrak, a zagadili dušu. Razbili smo atom, ali ne i naše predrasude. Pišemo više, ali učimo manje. Planiramo više, ali pos žemo manje. Naučili smo žuri , ali ne i čeka . Imamo višu zaradu, ali i niži moral. Imamo sve više hrane, a sve smo više nezahvalni. Gradimo jače kompjutere sa većom memorijom, ali razgovaramo sve manje i manje. Ovo su vremena brze prehrane i spore probave; velikih ljudi, a malih karaktera; brzih zarada i površnih od-nosa. Ovo je vrijeme mira u svijetu, a rata u kući. Vrijeme mnogo dokolice, a malo uživanja. Vrijeme raznovrsne hrane i loše prehrane. Sve je manje financijskih problema u braku, a sve više razvoda; ovo su dani brzih putovanja, oskudne odjeće i niskog morala; sve debljih ljudi, i tableta koje mogu sve – da te oraspolože, otupe ili ubiju. Zapam te: Provedite što više vremena s vašim voljenima, jer oni neće bi vječno pored vas. Recite poneku ljubaznu riječ onome tko vas odozdo gleda sa strahopoštovanjem, jer će ta mala osoba uskoro odras i o ći. Sje te se da date topao zagrljaj onome kraj vas, jer je to jedino blago koje možete da svojim srcem, a ne košta vas ništa. Sje te se da kažete “Volim te” vašim voljenima, no najviše od svega iskreno mislite tako. Poljubac i zagrljaj mogu izliječi ranu, ako dolaze duboko iz srca. Sje te se da se držite za ruke i cijenite trenutke kada ste zajedno, jer jednoga dana te osobe neće bi tu. Nađite vremena da volite, nađite vremena da razgovarate, i nađite vremena da podijelite vaše dragocjene misli s drugima. Smijte se često, dugo i iskreno. Smijte se dok ne izgubite dah. Suze se događaju. Izdržite, odbolujte, preživite. Recite ljudima koje volite da ih volite, u svakoj prilici, jer život se ne mjeri brojem udisaja koje udahnemo, nego trenucima koji nam oduzmu dah.
