Rain, Rain and More Rain
As many of you know, Judy Lott is temporarily out of commission. She is in the care of her family, friends and the good people at Ocala Regional Hospital. By the time this newsletter arrives at your house, I am hoping she will be recovered and back home. It's the lifeblood of our lawns. We definitely need rain. However, not in torrents, please! Those of you up north or those here that have family and friends up north know that it's been a very cool, rainy spring. I told my younger son that I would trade him some of our warmth for some of his rain. Recently I had to let him know that we've had enough already. Dangerous driving, flooded parking lots and sinkholes are no fun. On July 10 our clubhouse will be closing for some much needed repairs and the replacement of rugs. This closing affects all the normal activities such as cards, sewing, billiards, library, etc. If you are a voracious reader, now is the time to stack up on books by your favorite author. Please just keep them until the library is open again. The same is true if you are a puzzle fanatic. Joanne Mickett plans to rent a Port-a-potty, so the pool will remain open during the renovations. Enjoy the summer!

The Saddle Oak Club Library will be closed for most of
the month of July, as new flooring is being installed.
Please check out any books you would like for your July
summer reading before Monday the 3rd. Hopefully, we
will re-open by July 24th, if possible. PLEASE DO NOT
RETURN ANY BORROWED BOOKS UNTIL AFTER THE
LIBRARY RE-OPENS. Also, please hold any Library
donations until that time. It will be a major project to
remove all the books and then reshelve them afterward.
Your help and understanding is appreciated.

The hope was that by hanging the bottles in a
tree, evil spirits would find their way into the
bottles, enticed to enter by the bottle’s
enticing color, and become stuck. Since the
spirits would not be able to find their way back
out again, they would remain in the bottle until
the morning sun would then destroy them.
The tradition of creating bottle trees carried
over to the people of the Congo starting in the
9th century when slaves brought the tradition
with them during the slave trades in the 17th
century.
As time went on, slaves on Southern
plantations renewed the tradition. They
commonly used crepe myrtle trees, and in the
Old Testament, this tree is a reoccurring image
that represents freedom and escape from
slavery.
Perhaps many SOCers have seen these bottle
trees adorning at least two homes here in the
park. I thought perhaps there was more of a
story here than meets the eye. Not having had
the opportunity to speak to those residents, I
did a little research.
Bottle trees are one of the many unique sights
in the Southern states. Traditionally, bottle
trees are always made from bottles one saves
over the course of several years. People have
been creating these trees in the South for
hundreds of years. However, their history
dates back much further. Glass bottles began
circulating through Africa, Egypt, and
Mesopotamia in 1600 BC. The belief that spirits
could live in these bottles quickly followed.
