Pleasing God – Part 3

We can’t try to please God in order to get Him to love us. You can’t get

something that you already have. God already loves the whole world, so much so that He gave His Son so that no one would have to perish. God still loves us, passionately, infinitely even when we’re at our worst, even when we’re not pleasing Him. So that’s got nothing to do with it. God is pleased with us when we partake of His goodness, when His goodness affects us, when it begins to make us good like He is. In Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, he describes a life that is pleasing to God. Paul says, “for this is the will of God: your sanctification”. It seems like in pleasing someone else, the goodness comes to both parties. It’s good for you when someone pleases you and it is good for that person also. This is especially so with God. We ourselves are the beneficiaries of living to please God. When God is pleased with us, with what we’re doing, with how we’re living our lives we receive great goodness in our lives. God is well pleased with His Son Jesus Christ for many reasons. And God is pleased with us when we do the same things that Jesus did, to the extent that we are able. God is pleased with us when we pray. God is pleased with us when we forgive our enemies and those who have hurt us. God is pleased with us when we are peacemakers, when we hunger and thirst for righteousness, when we are pure in heart, when we are merciful. God is pleased when we know the goodness He has for us, when we have His goodness in our lives and when it fills us up. God isn’t some killjoy who is only pleased with us when we’re all work and no play. God doesn’t expect us go through life knowing nothing but pain, fear, sweat and toil. We may have to endure some hardships and pains, but God always brings good out of those things. When we live lives that are pleasing to God we can only add more goodness to the world and to ourselves. And with that God would be well pleased. Amen. Agradando a Dios – 3ª Parte

Book of the Gospels Paul Turner

The Book of the Gospels is a collection of Gospel passages proclaimed at Mass. It is an excerpt of the lectionary, usually containing the Gospels for Sundays and solemnities, and decorated with dignity. It does not contain the entire texts of all four Gospels. The words of Jesus are highly esteemed by Christians, so the Book of the Gospels receives more respect than other volumes of the lectionary. It is not required to use of the Book of the Gospels at Mass, but it is recommended. This book—not the lectionary—may be carried in the entrance procession by a deacon, or by a lector when there is no deacon. The minister walks with the book slightly elevated and places it upon the altar, which represents Christ, the living stone (1 Pt 2:4). This placement unifies two primary symbols for Christ from the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. During the Gospel acclamation, the deacon or priest goes to the altar, lifts the Book of the Gospels, and carries it to the ambo. He may incense the book after announcing the evangelist. He proclaims the Gospel and then kisses the book. If a bishop presides, the deacon who proclaims the Gospel may carry the Book of the Gospels to the bishop for him to kiss. The bishop may then grasp the book and bless the people by making the sign of the cross with it. Afterward, the book may be placed on the credence table or in some other worthy place. During the ordination of a deacon, the Book of the Gospels is placed briefly in his hands. During the ordination of a bishop, the Book of the Gospels is briefly laid upon his head.

Please pray for those who have died, and have gone to their eternal rest with the Lord, especially for Louis Romero. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration. This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from. An adorer is needed for:

Monday 3:00 p.m.—4:00 p.m. Monday 4:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m. Tuesday 2:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m.

Thursday 9:00 p.m.—10:00 p.m. Thursday 11:00 p.m.—12:00 Midnight

Friday 10:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

lunes 3:00 p.m.—4:00 p.m. lunes 4:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m.

martes 2:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m. jueves 9:00 p.m.—10:00 p.m.

jueves 11:00 p.m.—12:00 media noche viernes 10:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m.

from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. The Parish Library is located in the Family Life Center, on Main Street, and has no regular “open” hours. We try to keep an interesting sample of the more than 2000 books in our library in the narthex book shelves. Please phone us at (830) 238-5959 to ask for a particular book, or to make an appointment to browse in the main collection. Books may be checked out by writing your name and phone number on the circulation card inside the back cover of the book, and leaving the card in the special box at the BooksToBorrow station. You may keep the book as long as you are using it. If someone else needs it, we will phone you. If you are ready to return it, but can’t find it, or if there is some other problem, please let us know, and we will take the book off our records. All our books have been donated – we have spent no church money on new books for at least the past seven years – and we will not ask you to pay to replace the book. In recent memory, we have been happy to have a phone call confessing that a book had been rained on (while in a car with the windows open). There was also a face-to-face confession from a youngster from a large family that a book had been lost at home. We have been glad to hear these news bits, so we can update our records.
