Alex Anderson’s love of quilting began in 1978 when she completed her Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt as part of her work toward a degree in art from San Francisco State University. Over the years, she has focused on understanding fabric relationships and has developed an intense appreciation for traditional quilts and quilting surface design.

Alex is the author of more than 30 books, in four languages, selling more than one million copies worldwide. She designs fabric for RJR Fabrics and is co-creator of the Quilters' Select Brand of quilting supplies with RNK Distributing/Floriani.

With Ricky Tims, she is a founding partner of The Quilt Show.com and The Quilt Life Magazine, which was published by the American Quilter’s Society from 2009-2014. The Quilt Show is an interactive online video/web TV program that has more than 160,000 registered members in more than 100 countries. The show’s mission is to educate, inspire, entertain, connect and

grow the quilting community. The Quilt Life celebrated the lifestyle of today’s quiltmaker in a fresh, full-color format. In 2010, The Library Journal recognized it as one of the top 10 new magazines.

The International Quilt Festival named Alex as its 2008 Silver Star Award winner, an honor presented annually to an individual “whose work and influence has made—and continues to make—a sizable and positive impact on the quilting industry and community.”

In February 2009, readers of Quilters' Newsletter Magazine selected Alex as “The Most Influential Person in The Quilting Industry” in a three-way tie with Ricky Tims and Karey Bresenhan of Quilts, Inc.

Alex’s personal mission is not only to share her love of quilting with anyone who will listen, but to educate and encourage those interested in quilting as clearly and simply as possible so quilting can continue to be handed down from generation to generation.

Dear Quilting Friends,

Adventures…I know that everyone who attended the June Meeting in Grand Lake had a wonderful time. Pat Yamin is a wonderful speaker and teacher and I know that we all

learned something new to add to our sewing tool kit this month. Thanks to

the Peaks n’ Pines Quilt Guild for inviting us to come to the mountains and experience quilting in that part of our state. We hope to return again in the future.

Happy 41st Birthday CQC! We will have another exciting and wonderful time at our Birthday Meeting with special guest Alex Anderson. What a special treat to get to hear her speak on Saturday and then have time with her on Sunday to discuss how to quilt our quilts and how to turn our stashes into something incredible. Remember to arrive early and carpool as we are expecting many quilters to attend this meeting. If you have a quilt that was inspired by Alex plan to bring it for Show & Tell so that we can show off the quilts of Colorado.

I hope you are working on or searching for the quilt that you will enter into the Quilt-a-Fair Show this year. The theme is Fall Holidays and Other Happenings. The quilt can be new or one that has been part of your collection. We have sold out all booths, so a beautiful CQC Show will definitely add to the festivities.

We are also excited that the Small Quilt Auction will be part of the show again this year. We had a great turn out last year both of small quilts and bidders. We have seen a couple of this year’s entries and they are beautiful. We will also have another quilt from the Opal Frey collection, as well as a small quilt from Cheryl Phillips, one of our own Colorado teachers and a recent speaker. Look for more information about the Small Quilt Auction on the Quilt-a Fair page.

Articles, photos, changes and newsletter reprint requests should be sent to our editor. Everything needs to be on the editor’s desk by the 15th of the previous month. The Beginnings of Kit QuiltsKit quilts began to emerge on the quilt market in the early 20th century. They have often been derided as “paint by number quilts.” They have endured however and today are usually just considered to be a product found in every quilt shop, often purchased by new quilters unsure of their skills in cutting or not confident in color choice, or by more proficient quilters because it is timesaving and many of the patterns are so beautiful.

In the 20s and 30s, kits came in several different types; pre-cut pieces to stitch into blocks, basted appliqué blocks, printed cross stitched blocks, or as finished quilts. Earlier quilt kits were not pre-stamped but consisted of a piece of cloth, a perforated pattern and a paste or powder to create the design. This technique has come full circle with the templates and pounding powder in use today to mark quilts.

lt wasn’t long before the more commonly known stamped with blue lines were devised. Die cut patterns were also sold in a variety of shapes including butterflies. They followed the Colonial Revival style of decorating fostered by a plethora of women’s magazines. Because kit quilts were marketed in magazines, catalogs and newspapers, a certain homogeneity in pattern styles developed that went beyond the regionalism sometimes seen in other quilts from that period.

Colors were usually solid color pastels. Motifs were often floral echoed by the scalloped edges that finished the quilts. The designs were stamped on fabrics or pre-cut in pieces carefully shaded to be appliquéd into realistic flowers. Additionally, embroidery was often used in combination with the appliqué to provide detail to the designs.

June Meeting

Workshop Photos

MARILYN YOCKEY THIRTIES STARS

Pat Yamin took the fear out of Y-seams during her workshop "One Hexagon, 30 Diamonds" Friday, June 21 in Grand Lake. Despite a rare June rainy/snowy day, close to 20 participants brought their own unique color and fabric combinations to the quilt Pat designed based on inspiration from her collection of antique quilts.

The first step was to select a fabric for the hexagons and center diamonds, both of which were consistent fabrics throughout the quilt. Then participants selected coordinating fabrics that were arranged in a scrappy fashion. Pat's method didn't require pinning or backstitching.

The pattern for the quilt and templates for easy cutting are available on her website: comequiltwithme.com.

Quilt can have been made any time before and including in 2019. Quilts for the show need to be in good condition. Quilts will not be judged, just one Viewer’s Choice given.

You can find information on how to deliver your quilt to us by following the information included on the 2019 Quilt-A-Fair Quilt Show Entry Form. Those forms can be found in each CQC Colorado Threads Newsletter or at the June, July and August CQC meetings on the Membership or Raffle tables.

The Colorado Quilting Council, Inc. 14

General MeetingJune 22, 2019, Grand Lake Center

1st Vice President Pat Cleaveland called the meeting to order at 10:00 am. She thanked the Grand Lake Center for their help and allowing us to use their space for our meeting. Pat thanked Peaks N’ Pines for the fabulous table of refreshments. Martha Stevenson welcomed everyone to Grand Lake.

The minutes from the May general meeting were approved as published in the newsletter.

Karen Brown read the abridged minutes of the June 11th board meeting.

Officer Reports:

Membership, Pat Cleaveland—41 members were in attendance, 10 guests for a total of 51 at the meeting—total membership is 592 with 2 new member today.

Treasury, Mary Rush—See the newsletter for details. You can give to Colorado Gives Day at any time (look for us on the list of charities) coloradogives.org

Programs 2019, Dana Jones—see the newsletter for details. Please sign up to take a workshop in Grand Junction. Give me ideas for speakers and techniques you want to learn.

Committee Reports:

2019 Raffle Quilt, Kay Hefner—please purchase and/or sell your tickets. The money received from the sale of tickets helps pay for our speakers and the facilities where we meet.

Project Warm Hearts, Nancy Samuels—A new block is in the June newsletter. Follow the instructions printed in the newsletter. I also have kits for check out and quilt tops for quilting.

Fall Retreat 2019, Betty Andrews—Fall Retreat will be held October 4, 5 & 6, 2019 at The Hideaway in the Black Forest area. Barbara Beasley will be our instructor. Barbara is famous for her classes on animal portraits. She has a limited class size, so we will have a registration start date set for the fall retreat. More details to come. Registration will begin on June 1st. 6 openings available as of today and 5 spaces in the class

Small Quilt Auction, Betty Andrews—We will bring back our small quilt auction again this year. Quilts will be restricted to small quilts only. The person donating the quilt receives 70% of the proceeds and the guild receives 30% of the auction proceeds. This was a great fundraiser last year. • Quilts may be any shape but must not exceed 120 inches total around the perimeter. • Any style of quilt will be accepted, modern, traditional, etc. • Quilts will be accepted now through August 15th at any meeting or they can be mailed to Betty Andrews, 13655 West 74th Drive, Arvada, CO 80005. Call Betty Andrews at 720-662-4564 if you have any questions.

Volunteers, Laural Hoppes—there are still positions on the board available for 2020, please step forward and join a fun group that is working to move CQC forward. I challenge each of you to join a committee. We have openings for Hospitality 2019 and Parliamentarian, talk to Dawn

Quilt Show for Quilt-A-Fair, Kay Hefner—2019 QUILT-A-FAIR QUILT SHOW, Fall Holidays and Other Happenings. See the newsletter for more details.

Shirley Sanden Memorial Fund, Sue Keck & Lucille Rypinski—the spring quilt awarded in Grand Lake to Linda Crane of Grand Lake. Workshop winners for volunteering in 2018 are Glenda Brown and Jean Ruger.

2020 Quilt Show—We need someone to step forward to chair a committee to plan a quilt show to be possibly displayed in the Lakewood Heritage Center in 2020. This show could take the place of the Capitol Quilt Show, which we can no longer hang. We are still receiving interest in a big show, so please help us put one on in 2020.

Library, Carol Cook—check out the 2200 books in the CQC Library online (LibraryThing.com).

Volunteer of the Quarter, Jackie Anderson—This award is based on the time accumulated every three months. The award is for the membership not the Board Members. A different individual will be selected each time. Four will be awarded. Please enter your volunteer hours on the Track It Forward site.

Mystery Quilt, Carol Cook—The final clue for the 2019 Mystery Quilt was revealed in the June newsletter. Today I am showing the completed quilt, named Faithful Friends. This is a medallion style quilt which is 54” x 62” completed. This quilt is primarily constructed with Half-Square Triangles and Flying Geese units arranged into several different blocks and borders. A huge thank you goes to Karen Brown (our recording secretary) who tested the quilt instructions and found more errors than I would have liked. I hope all of our quilters enjoyed making this year’s mystery quilt and welcome your feedback.

1790 - 1795 Martha Soule's Crewel Embroidered and Pieced QuiltIn 1951 the donor informed the museum that she had a quilt made by her husband's great-great grandmother in 1792. A note attached to the quilt stated that it was made by Martha Babson Lane Soule of Freeport, Maine, and that "she spun and dyed the worsted and designed the pattern embroidered on it." The donor continued in her letter, "In going through some old correspondence we find that the mate to this quilt was donated to your Museum many years ago by my husband's great-aunt Mrs. Caroline Gordon." That quilt had been donated to the Museum in 1925, and more than 25 years later this quilt from the Soule family was also added to the Collection.

This quilt is both pieced and embroidered. The center panel, a 38-inch square, is embroidered in indigo-dyed wool, surrounded by a border pieced of 8" printed cotton squares and triangles, with a crewel embroidered outer border. Embroidery stitches include stem, cross, herringbone, seed, buttonhole, Roumanian, running, and couching. Considering the style of the quilt and the use of cotton 2-ply sewing and quilting threads in the construction indicate a date no earlier than the very-late-eighteenth century or probably early-nineteenth century. The crewel embroidered pieces might have been from bed furniture of an earlier date. The center panel appears to be cut from a larger piece of embroidery; the top and side borders are also shortened; only the bottom border, with a large heart, is a complete design. The base fabrics for the embroidered sections and the lining are cotton and linen/cotton with a thin layer of carded cotton

between them. The pieced inner border is composed of two fabrics; one resist-printed the other English copperplate printed ca 1775-1785. The chevron patterned quilting is done in a running stitch, 7 stitches per inch. Martha Babson Lane was born December 22, 1772 in Freeport, Cumberland, Maine. The Lane family is listed among the settlers in that area of Maine as early as the 1650s. Martha married Moses Soule on May 25, 1793. Moses farmed in the Freeport, Maine area, and was a deacon in the church and a caulker by trade. Martha

and Moses Soule had eleven children, three of whom died within a few months of each other in 1807 at ages three, five and eight. Three other children, born later, were given their names; John/James Babson, Nancy and Jeannette. One son, Gideon Lane Soule (1796-1879) was the first of his four brothers to attend Phillips Exeter Academy. He later became a professor at the Academy and for thirty-five years, from 1838 to 1873, served as a Principal. Under his able direction the Academy experienced increasing growth, prosperity and prestige. The youngest son, John Babson Lane Soule (1815-1891), after attending the Academy, graduated from Bowdoin College. Although he completed

law studies, he spent his life as a teacher, journalist and minister in Indiana, Wisconsin and Illinois. He is noted for possibly being the originator of the popular slogan: "Go West, young man!" used in an editorial he wrote in 1851 for the Terre Haute Express which was later used by Horace Greeley so effectively in an 1865 New York Tribune editorial. Martha Babson Lane Soule died on December 20, 1837 and is buried in the Lane Cemetery near Freeport, Maine.
