Let us cultivate the virtues of being thrifty, industrious, and productive. We are not numb not to feel the toll of our uncaring attitude toward our environment. We often do not see our wastefulness. As stewards of God’s creation, we are the guardians of Mother Nature. The last verse of the Gospel tells us of Jesus withdrawing from the crowd to go to the mountain alone. This was time for Jesus to pray. This was the time for Him to re-charge and be in conversation with the Father. May we, too, learn and strive to find that time to withdraw and be alone with our God in prayer.

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B)

Meeting Our Basic NeedsMa. Rosario R. Tejada

The Gospel for today is the story of the multiplication of the five barley loaves and two fish that fed about five thousand men, not counting the women and children who were with them. It had surely been a long journey for the people, the apostles, and for Jesus. At one point in this long journey, they all felt hungry and needed to eat. Philip, one of the Apostles, was saying that even a two-hundred-days wages worth of food would not be enough for them. Andrew, having found the five loaves and two fish, brought them to Jesus. These He took, gave thanks, and distributed to the people. Everyone was filled and there were twelve baskets of leftover. How could this be possible?

Food is an essential need to survive. Without food, our body would not be able to function as it should. What happened along the way while the food was being distributed by the Apostles? Since the people were expecting that they were on a long journey, they had brought along their food provision, perhaps, even just for themselves. So, when the five loaves and

two fish were distributed, most of them took out their own food and ate. And so, there were leftovers.

Here, we see that there must be coordination between Gods will and our own cooperation in response to the present need to be tackled. If it were only the five loaves and two fish, would they be sufficient for that number of people to feed? Had the people come bringing their own baon for themselves alone, without sharing, would they be all satisfied and still have this amount of leftover? I do not think so. Precisely, we need to act in accordance with Gods plan.

Satisfaction comes from being contented. We need to identify our needs and wants. In this Gospel scenario, the people needed food. It was not merely their want. They had to eat for they were all hungry. It was their physiologic need at that moment.

In life, when our needs are satisfied, we feel contented. Of course, it will not harm us if we aim to be a little comfortable. But let us just make sure that in the process, we

do not forget that the needs of others must be prioritized before our wants.

Towards the end of the Gospel, Jesus told His disciple to Gather the fragments leftover so that nothing would be wasted.

This reminds us to preserve and take care of Mother Nature because she is the only source of our basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter to give and maintain our good health. Let us cultivate the virtues of being thrifty, industrious, and productive. We are not numb not to feel the toll of our uncaring attitude toward our environment. We often do not see our wastefulness. As stewards of Gods creation, we are the guardians of Mother Nature.

Ginharian sang Dios Unahon kag Pasulabihon!

    CANDLE LIGHT (July 26 - Aug. 1, 2015)

Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and everything will be given unto you.

Husto gid man ang ginahambal sa amon sang una sang kami seminarista pa: Service is a reward in itself.

Indi man malain ang magpangita sang kwarta.

    CANDLE LIGHT (July 26 - Aug. 1, 2015)

It has been almost a year since we embarked on this noble and necessary task of building the Jaro Parochial House. Last July 2014, the Parish offices were transferred to Pius XII building. The old Parochial House was then opened to the parishioners to give us a picture of its state as well as to celebrate our good-byes to the space that has nurtured many memories and stories. For a couple of weeks more, through Candlelight, there was venue to express our dreams and expectations for the new Parochial House. Actual work on the site started in August 2014.

So what has transpired after almost a year? How far have we gone?

The Parochial House is a two-storey structure that will have on the ground floor the following:

Parish Office Parish Archives Accounting Office Office of the Parish Priest Pastoral, Catechetical, Social Action offices Candlelight office two meeting rooms a wide lobby rooms for parish personnel a kitchen for big occasions

    service areas

On the second floor, we will find the following:

Rooms of Priests (a total of 5 rooms) a common room for priests an open roof deck a wider lobby regular kitchen storage spacesThese spaces will help facilitate the

administrative, pastoral as well as service related functions of the parish. The Parochial House will also be the residence of the priests assigned to pastor the Jaro Parish community.

So far, the buildings structural foundations are new, the 2nd floor is now concrete, inner walls between spaces have been started, construction of roof beams is also on-going. During this past week, construction debris has been transported to the St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary to serve as fillers for some parts of the seminary grounds.

In the coming weeks, the trusses will be fabricated, and hopefully, in a few months the roof should be in place.

    As of last week, we spent already PhP 4,395,568.18. Out of this, 57.9% (or 2,544,861.42) were spent for materials;

Parochial house Reconstruction Project... A Year After

41.3% (or 1,815,506.47) were spent for labor; and the remaining .8% (or 35,200.29) for miscellaneous expenses.

Since we started we were able to gather a total donation of 3,404,090.63. Last Jaro fiesta, we were able raise 829,935.00 from the solidarity fund. Funds gathered from the previous Church Repair amounting to 1, 247,394.40 were also used for this project. All in all, we collected PhP 5,481,420.03.

These data indicate how reliant this project is on your generosity. We continue to appeal for help to realize this project.

Many of us are wondering, how long will it take to finish the project? Likewise, many have observed that the construction pace is slow! Unfortunately, this observation is accurate! The delay is, indeed, obvious. We are however assuring the community that steps have been done to correct this problem. We are sincerely asking for your understanding and most especially, continued support. We will provide you with updates on developments.

Trusting in Gods grace through the intercession of Ntra. Sra de la Candelaria and in our communal working together, we are confident that everything will be well.

Ina tungod nabatyagan man nila nga may ara nga kulang sa ila kabuhi. Siguro gid ako nga ginagutom kag ginauhaw man sila sa Pulong sang Dios. Nagapangita sila sang kasigurohan sang ila kabuhi.

Dios nagahatag wala sing hawid-hawid. When God gives, He gives abundantly. He gives more than we need for ourselves that we may have something to share with others, especially those who lack what they need. God takes the little we have and multiplies it for the good of others.

JARO, Iloilo City, July 20, 2015 132 houses will be the blessed and turned over to survivors of super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) on July 29 in Ajuy, in the province of Iloilo, announced the Jaro Archdiocesan Action Center (JASAC).

The official turn over ceremonies on July 29 will start at 8 a.m. with a Eucharistic celebration to be presided over by Jaro Archbishop Angel N. Lagdameo.

The housing project called Caritas Village consists of 66 duplex houses built on 1.6 hectares of land in Barangay Malayu-an, Ajuy.

Project partnersAside from the provisions of shelter,

a road network, a water system, childrens playground, a multi-purpose building, and a basketball court, the housing project offers a package of services that includes livelihood programs and ecosystems.

JASAC director Msgr. Meliton Oso, said the project was made possible through the sponsorship of Caritas Austria through Caritas Internationalis, NASSA/Caritas, Philippines, and the Archdiocese of Jaro, through the Jaro Archdiocesan Social Action Center.

The direct recipients of the houses, considered project-partners for their active collaboration in the undertaking, will be 132 families whose houses had been totally damaged by typhoon Yolanda and were not allowed by the lot owners to rebuild their houses or whose houses were within 40 meters of a no-build zone and have agreed to be relocated, Oso explained.

The least servedThe Social Action director said the

project-partner families were selected because they were the most in need but the least served!

Explaining the significance of Caritas Village, the JASAC director said: One has to understand that after Yolanda these people lost not only their homes but also their means of livelihood.

It is important to help families regain their livelihood and make their communities function again.

We cannot allow these people to be reduced to mendicancy, he stressed.Yolanda destruction

Nueva Caceres Archbishop Rolando Tria Tirona, OCD, chairman of NASSA/Caritas Philippines, who will also represent Caritas

Internationalis, will be present. Also expected to come to the turn over

ceremonies are the Social Action directors of the nine dioceses that were worst hit by Yolanda. Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor and Mayor Juan R. Alvarez of the Municipality of Ajuy will attend the event, representing the Philippine government.

Several towns in Iloilo province suffered destruction as super-typhoon typhoon Yolanda ripped through Panay Island on Nov. 8, 2013.

The coastal communities in the towns of Estancia, Concepcion, and Ajuy were wiped out by the storm. Other affected towns were Janiuay, Barotac Viejo, Carles, Batad, San Dionisio, San Rafael, Balasan, and Sara, Oso said.

    TRAINING FOR READERS

July 21, 2015. Pope Francis participated in a global meeting of mayors about climate change and human trafficking. His encyclical, Laudato Si, was a major inspiration for the mayors who attended the conference.

He explained to them that before all else, his encyclical is a social document.

Faced with the question, I said, No, it is not a green encyclical. It is a social encyclical because it is about the social environment, the social life of humanity. We can not separate taking care of the environment. Moreover, taking care of the environment is a social attitude.

When the environment is treated poorly, the Pope said that the consequences affect all people. He explained that climate change, poverty, and human trafficking are all interrelated. For this reason, he said that its important for them to take part in a global struggle.

One of the things that you notice when the environment and Creation are not maintained

We are calling for the cooperation of everyone as the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) sets the nationwide conduct of the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN 2015). The PSA pursuant to Republic Act 10625 or the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013, is the governments central agency on civil registration, statistics and data collection. The agency has been tasked in the preparation and conduct of nationwide population counts.

Enumeration is on August 10 to September 6, 2015 in most provinces and may be extended until end of September 2015 in big cities. Enumerators wearing official POPCEN 2015 IDs will visit and interview every household to ask basic information about its members, such as age, sex, marital status, education, and usual occupation, if any. The interview will take about 15 to 30 minutes for each household.

The PSA calls for all to cooperate and provide truthful answers to census questions.

    WORSHIP mINISTRy mEETING

is the excessive growth of cities. It is a global phenomenon. Large cities become large but increasingly surrounded by poverty. There is more suffering because of the effects of environmental neglect.

Deforestation, the Pope said, is an example of excessive technification. He added that it takes the dignity of work away from people and forces them into poverty. This sort of desperation drives them into human trafficking as a way to improve their future.

Hopefully the international community will address the issue, the Pope said.

I would say that it is necessary for the United Nations to be involved. I have high hopes for the Paris summit in November, that a fundamental and basic agreement can be reached.

Before leaving, the Pope signed a joint declaration with more than 60 mayors. They vowed to take more steps to fight human trafficking and to make their cities more sustainable.

    Words from the Gospel

    CANDLE LIGHT (July 26 - Aug. 1, 2015) CANDLE LIGHT (July 26 - Aug. 1, 2015)

There was a time, I couldnt remember the exact date, when a friend invited me to her birthday party. She told me that her daughter who was in third year high school had prepared a program for her, participated exclusively by family members. It was to be shown in the receiving room before lunchtime.

The master of ceremonies was her daughter, who started the program with a prayer. She, then, asked us all to join in the singing of a birthday song. After the musical numbers were shown, she announced that her sister in Grade six was going to deliver a speech, entitled Tribute to my Mother:

My Dearest Mama, you are the most wonderful and precious gift God has ever given me.

Since the Lord gave me life through you, you cared for me and loved me as if everything you did, was, not always enough.

My road has been lifted and continues to shine with brilliant lights of love and care. I have become your very precious possession; you feel and want everything good to be given to me.

Mama, words are never enough to let you know how much I desire to repay you.

I am glad that we have relatives and friends who are with us now to share with us our joy and gratitude. I cannot open my heart for all of you to see, but I can share with you my feelings and my desire to express my gratitude to Mama my love for her and my prayer that God would bless her all her life.

Thank you very much and may the Lord God in His desire to bind us all with parental love, bless us all.

She smiled and bowed. There was a long silence after her

emotional speech and some of us became teary-eyed. Her speech brought me back to those days when I was young and had both parents to care for us. The years flew by, I lost them and became a mother

myself. Now that I am a grandmother, and have become a great grandmother, I recall that speech and the essence of its reality.

The world is no longer the same. From home, to school, to community, many changes took place. Our manner of living has become a struggle that needs our strength, our intelligence, and a strong spirituality in order to keep abreast with the trend of times. Although we have laws to abide with, we, too, must have our own moral risks to make us firm and lawful.

We are fortunate that we have our Missal, Holy Bible, and our doctrine to guide us when the road seems slippery and rugged. If we know how to listen to divine guidance, we will not miss the right trail. We may have wisdom. We may have intelligence. We may have more than enough in our pocket but, if our heart is empty if love and respect are absent in our core of life, everything is meaningless.

I invite you to open the table of your heart and put on it different courses that will make your spiritual life healthy - the love and service to God as the appetizer: charity to the needy and the poor as one dish; humility and thoughtfulness as another course, with the love and devotion to our eternal King as the desert.
