LETTER FROM OUR BISHOP TAMAYO
WE KNOW THEIR NAMES By: Most Rev. James A. Tamayo, Bishop of the Diocese of Laredo
In March of this year, when COVID-19 began to spread across the United
States, we were not sure how it would impact us. As the months have passed, we have
seen how harmful, and at times deadly, the novel coronavirus is. Health and govern-
ment officials have encouraged and mandated safety precautions in an effort to protect
every person on our society. As people of faith, we know that God tells us to look out
for one another, and to do our part to help prevent the spread of the pandemic.
We have seen across the territory of the Diocese of Laredo- from Maverick
County to Zapata County and from Webb County to Jim Hogg County– the real dan-
ger of this virus. Initially, the elderly and those with underlying health conditions were thought to be most
vulnerable to experiencing severe symptoms. As the number of cases has risen over time, health officials
have confirmed that the virus affects people of all ages from young children to seemingly healthy young
adults. Sadly, with the growing number of people who have tested positive to COVID-19, we have also wit-
nessed a dramatic increase in the number of deaths throughout our community and the world.
Daily, the news reports on television, in the newspapers and throughout the social media platforms
inform us that the coronavirus and its negative impact in our world is rapidly spreading. Sadly, it is not just
that the numbers are rising, but we recognize that the virus is affecting the cities and town in which we live.
Brothers and sisters, now when we see the numbers increase, we realize it is no longer just “a number.” The
numbers represent our family members: our sons and daughters, our parents and grandparents. WE KNOW
THEIR NAMES. They are our coworkers, our neighbors and our friends. While hospitals rightfully
maintain confidentiality and do not disclose identities, WE KNOW THEIR NAMES. No longer is this
pandemic “out there.” It is in our midst: our homes, our work place and in every corner of our community.
We call to mind those who have lost their battle with the virus as well as those who are currently struggling
to fight it.
What should we do? We must follow the advice of health and government officials. We have a moral
obligation to take these precautions seriously– if not to protect ourselves, then to safeguard those around us
who may be more susceptible to severe and life-threatening symptoms of the virus. We must wear masks in
public, continue to social distance and diligently practice basic hygiene habits.
It is heartening to know that so many people of faith and goodwill are offering prayers to God who
remains ever present with us. He hears our prayers. He comforts the sick and suffering. He receives our
beloved dead. HE KNOWS THEIR NAMES. He is our Father.
Our prayers are an expression of our faith in Jesus who accepted His cross, and with unconditional
love, offered His life for us. In the midst of our uncertainly, anxiety and pain, God’s love endures and will be
victorious.
I propose to believers of every faith group that we unite spiritually though prayer and fasting. In
conversation with priests and spiritual leaders of various faith denominations, I invite you to join in three
days of prayer and fasting from Monday, July 27 –Wednesday, July 29, 2020.
In the context of the pandemic we are facing, our three days of prayer and fasting should include our
sincere petition to God to protect us from this coronavirus pandemic and guide us through this time. Our
fasting should begin with abstinence from actions which have been shown to spread the virus. And so, I urge
you to avoid social gatherings; fast from ignoring the face mask protocol, and instead, choose to wear your
mask in public; and refrain from being in close proximity with others.
Of course, there is also the traditional understanding of a fast which can be refraining from favorite
foods. In union with our prayers, this type of fasting is a selfless denial of something to which we are accus-
tomed and desire.
Will you join me from Monday through Wednesday, July 27-29, 2020? Choose and commit to how you
will specifically pray and fast. I truly believe that God, who hears our every prayer and sees each action, will
be pleased to receive the fragrant offering of our community’s untied prayers and fasting.
By this, we remember those who have died and all those who are sick and suffering; and provide
blessings and strength to healthcare and essential workers. May our days of prayer and fasting continue even
beyond these three days to bring healing and protection from the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, that we
may see a decrease in the number of COVID-19 deaths...for WE KNOW THEIR NAMES.
