From

Fr Doug As I build my nest and settle in as your pastor, I am learning the local culture that makes every parish unique. I am glad that I have been given the opportunity to serve here. I am very hopeful about the future of this parish and believe we have a strong foundation on which to build. We have inherited a long tradition and a beautiful historical church; the real beauty of any church, however, is the faith of the people inside. The primary focus of our parish must always be the nourishment of our faith. Every week, we need to hear God’s Word in our Scripture to help us integrate what our Lord has taught us into our lives. It is our Eucharist that makes us Catholic – we are called to continue offering this sacred nourishment and the Mass to our community. Our method of worship has two centuries of tradition and the celebration of the Mass throughout the world unites us on our pilgrimage to eternal life in communion with God and each other. We can attend Mass at any Catholic Church, but our faith thrives in participation with a loving and concerned parish community. All our pastoral ministries, including our school, are focused on enticing people to the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation. On this side of God’s Kingdom, however, we continually encounter challenges. Our challenges in this faith community involve our own structural and financial health as well as compliance with our archdiocesan mandate to begin collaboration with St. Nicholas Church in Carver. Eventually, we will be “clustered” so that we may conserve resources so that both parishes can better nourish the faith. When our Guardian Angels parish commission structure is in place, and that will be soon, I will be seeking their six-year vision to help map my six year assignment as pastor. I am seeking a parish vision: what do you want this place to look and be like in six years? This requires participation and sharing of talent and treasure – that is what makes a parish thrive; division, apathy, and individual agendas are the recipe for corrosion and decay. I am grateful to see a parish with a strong faith life encouraged by dedicated employees and volunteers. Our parish is on the upswing and I am grateful to have inherited this momentum that I hope to accelerate. We must not, however, be naïve about our challenges – this is an aging facility with an excess of underutilized space and deferred maintenance. We are having difficulty living within our means and have little “fat” to cut. Nevertheless, I believe that we can continue serving our young for generations to come. Past generations from this historical parish have exercised their responsibility to pass their ancestors’ faith to our descendants. Now it is our turn to carry on this 150+ year’s parish mission and pass the faith to our children. Church is where we nourish our faith, hope, and charity in pursuit of a future vision of eternal life and salvation. Along the way we need each other to share our talents and treasure so that we can continue to nourish our faith in this parish community. It is not up to others, it is up to each of us individually to participate in pursuit of a future that involves nourishment of faith in downtown Chaska, as part of our Archdiocesan Church in communion with all Catholics throughout the world.

Mass Intentions … Mass intentions may be for the living and the de-parted, with a + designating in the bulletin a deceased person. There is a $10 suggested donation per Mass intention. Permission from the sick person or his/her family must be granted before a name’s inclusion in these prayers. To schedule a Mass intention, call Jean in the parish office (see contacts, page 2).

Baptism … Sacramental preparation is required for all parents. God-parents and Grandparents are also encouraged to attend. Baptismal prep sessions are given every other month and Baptism Masses are held once a month. Call Jean in the parish office (see contacts, oppo-site page) to schedule a child for Baptism and the parents for baptismal prep.

Prayers of the Faithful ….If you would like a name included in our Prayers of the Faithful for the sick, please call the Parish Office.

Penance...Saturdays from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and anytime by ap-pointment.

Matrimony...pre-registration required one year in advance; marriage preparation course is required.

Anointing… 1st weekend of the month following each Mass. For other requests, please contact the office.

Communion for the Homebound...When we come together to pray at our Eucharistic liturgy, we do not forget the members of our community who are unable to be with us because of ill health. We remember them in our prayer, and we wish to include them in our Holy Communion. Members of our community bring the Blessed Sacrament to them to comfort them and to unite them with us in the Eucharist. We are not always aware of those who have this need. Please call the Parish Of-fice to let us know if you or a member of your family would like to have Holy Communion brought to them. That way we can schedule a time for our ministers to visit and bring the Sacrament.

Hospital, Nursing Home, Homebound Visits...Churches are no longer notified by hospitals or nursing homes when a parishioner is admitted unless the family has requested it. If you or a family member are homebound, hospitalized or in a nursing home and would like a visit from a member of the pastoral ministry staff, please call Jean Rief in the parish office (see contacts, page 2).

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Guardian Angels in Chaska is seeking a full-time Maintenance Supervisor. The ideal candidate would either possess (or within reasonable time obtain) a low-pressure boiler’s license. Position involves performing maintenance and janitorial tasks as well as supervising part-time staff and volunteers who are providing maintenance and cleaning at the school and church. Interested candidates should contact Gary Van Eyll at (952) 227-4002.

Letter from Gary Van Eyll, Parish Director

It has been brought to my attention that some have concerns about Patrick working on the wall in the back of the friary gardens. First I would like to thank you for bringing this to my attention. Please, call (952-227-4002) or email ([email protected]) me with any questions you have. All questions are helpful to everyone, not just the person asking. Patrick will touch every yellow Chaska brick on this campus before he has completed his job here at Guardian Angels which will be approximately another five years. The reason the wall was being repaired first was from a safety standpoint. It was leaning toward the sidewalk and the concern was the possibly of hurting someone with falling bricks walking on the sidewalk. That concern has been rectified but we still need to put a cap on this wall to protect the wall and all the work we have done thus far. Patrick’s contract has been extended and he is working less hours per week under this scenario. He feels strongly about the wall being redone correctly and the quality of the finished product. He feels so strongly that he is donating some of his time to repair the wall at no charge to Guardian Angels. Patrick has donated more of his time to block up some windows in our first grade classroom to alleviate the moisture problem which resulted in mold in this classroom. We are very fortunate to have a skilled artisan like Patrick working for us and working with us on Rebuilding our Church. Once again please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. ~Thank you! Gary Van Eyll, Parish Director

Faith Formation Guardian Angels Faith Formation is only successful because of its wonderful volunteers! In order to continue with this success we need you to share your faith with Sunday School, Children’s Liturgy, Wednesday evening FF, Sacrament team, or be a part of the RCIA team. If you can volunteer for any of these commitments please call Ms. Emily Klinker 227-4007. If your talents are not in teaching, but you would like to do your part for the success of Guardian Angels Faith Formation please don’t hesitate to call – God has given us all many talents that can be beneficial to the faith formation ministry. Remember you do not need to have children in the program to volunteer. Are you thinking about home schooling your child for faith formation this year? If so please contact Emily Klinker 952-227-4007 as the home school program and policies have been rewritten this summer. There will be more community involvement and clearer guidelines on your accountability. Please note, that there is no home school program offered for sacramental years. On the weekend of August 6th and 7th, Deacon Gregg Sroder will be making an appeal for our Archdiocesan mission in Venezuela, Parroquia Jesucristo Resucitado. Ordained in September, 2001, Deacon Gregg currently serves at the Church of St. Odilia, in Shoreview. He has been involved with different areas of Hispanic ministry for several years. The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapois has had a presence in Ciudad Guayana since 1970, and like the social justice teachings of the Church, it is one of our best-kept secrets. With over 13,000 families and two priests, the need is great. A second collection, for the mission, will be taken up at all the Masses. We hope you will prayerfully consider giving. Anything you can give will be most helpful. If you want to come “prepared”, checks can be made payable to: The Center for Mission, with a note in the memo area: Venezuelan mission. Thank-you in advance, for your support.

~Deacon Gregg

FEAST OF FAITHFEAST OF FAITHFEAST OF FAITH The Preface Dialogue

“Lift up your hearts.” “We lift them up to the Lord.” “Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.” “It is right to give him thanks and praise.” With this ancient dialogue we enter the Eucharistic Prayer, the heart of the Mass. These venerable words have been part of the Christian liturgy almost from the beginning—by the time of Hippolytus of Rome (c. 215) they were already fixed in the liturgy. Several times during the Mass the priest has invited us to pray. There is something different here. We are invited to be “lifted up,” to ascend, to climb the Lord’s mountain, as it were, to go to a new place for this most solemn part of the Mass. And we are invited to a new frame of mind, a sense of joy, of focused dedication: our hearts must not be cast down, but lifted up, and lifted to the Lord. Why? Because we are going to give thanks—we are going to “eucharist!” It is right and just that we do this. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
