A personal message from the Executive Director
A TRIBUTE TO HOSPICE GEORGINA’S VOLUNTEERS
If you weren’t able to join us for the annual Volunteer appreciation BBQ, I’d like to share the message
presented to those gathered that evening:
Life is short. What matters are not the years, it’s the quality of our life. Our life is the short time we have
here to make a difference – or not.
And making a difference means many things to many people. But for you, the volunteer, you are making a
significant difference. A volunteer gives time. TIME - the most precious resource in our lives. Think about
all the hours you have given as a volunteer. Once you give an hour of your time, it is lost forever. That hour
you gave volunteering will never be replicated. Your time volunteering must be valued, but we can never
put a value on time. How can you value something that is so priceless?
As a volunteer you bring much to our organization. You bring skills, experience, friendship, vision,
leadership, inspiration, hope, caring...and you bring time. You choose to donate the most precious
commodity in the known universe. We may count your time in hours. We may attempt to count your time in
money. Though such methods have their reasons we will all be poorer if we don’t realize that the giving of
your time is simply and utterly magnificent.
So today we take a little time to thank you for the time you so willingly give. Thanks for spending some of
your time for us.
Until next month, continue “Sharing the Caring”

GETTING TO KNOW HOSPICE’S VOLUNTEER –
JENNY MACDONALD
How long have you lived in Georgina?
I have spent my entire 26 years living in Georgina!
Tell us a bit about your background…
Recently I graduated from Laurentian University with my Bachelor of Social
Work Degree. I am currently employed at an organization called Kerry's Place
where I work with individuals who are on the Autism spectrum.
Tell us about some of your favourite things to do…
In my free time I love to read, cook, and spend time with my cat.
What is your role at Hospice Georgina?
I was introduced to Hospice Georgina through my university placement.
Originally I was only supposed to stay for one semester but loved the staff,
other volunteers and clients so much that I stayed on for another semester
and continue to volunteer whenever my work schedule allows. During my
time with Hospice I have acted as the client and volunteer intake coordinator,
helped out with some of the groups such as Wellness Wednesday and New
Journey and helped plan and participated in fundraisers. I will be taking over
facilitation of the Willows Women’s Cancer Support Group in July.
Volunteer Hours: Just a reminder that all volunteers need to report your volunteer hours every month by the 10th . This information is
reported to the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care, which in turn funds our palliative programs. Without volunteer hours, our funding
could be in jeopardy.

Grief & Bereavement
On June 8th and June 15th Hospice Georgina welcomed Soul-Full Art
Therapy for two evenings of art making, promoting self-care through grief.
The first night proved to be a powerful experience for the group.
Participants created unique grief masks: the outside depicting how they
present themselves to the world and on the inside, how they really felt. To
cap off the evening participants made a simple print with paint that, when
shared with the group, invited a great sense of support. On the second
evening, participants transformed their words and challenges with the
grieving process into flowers. Can you guess what materials we used?
Coffee filters, markers, spritzes of water, pipe cleaners, and a few
decorative items. Art making and play are not only for children. Rather,
making art can be a safe and healthy way for people, at any age, to
release what needs to be expressed and tap into resources that were not
previously recognized.
Hospice Georgina continues to offer
individual and group grief support
throughout the summer months. Call
Jackie at 905-722-9333 for more
information.
