When she’s bad, ‘Little Mermaid’s’ Ursula

Liz McCartney is Ursula in the big bule costume with even bigger hair.

Broadway regular Liz Mc-Cartney is often cast in juicy supporting roles, and she slurps them up with gusto.

She’s played two seriously frustrated broads: the jealous diva Carlotta in The Phantom of the Opera and the frumpy schemer Madame Thénardier in Les Misérables. She was the spicy Bloody Mary in South Pacific at Lincoln Center and the horrible Madame Morrible in the national tour of Wicked. She got great buzz a de-cade ago when she sang the heart-stabbing “Talk Amongst Yourselves” in Taboo, Boy George’s short-lived autobiographical musical.

So it’s no surprise that McCartney’s name came up when casting directors sought someone to play the flamboyant sea witch Ursula in The Little Mermaid. Director Glenn Casale needed someone with a big voice who could be deli-ciously evil and put pizazz into her character’s glittery tentacles. (McCartney’s arms serve as two of her tentacles; she controls two others on her costume.)

“It’s soooo much fun,” McCartney says, straight from a run to a Home Goods store near her New Jersey home. She’d been shopping for décor for her daughters’ new bathroom.

“My girls — Megan, 10, and Keira, 7 — just love that I’m playing Ursula, but they also say ‘Mom, why do you always play the bad guy?’ I explain to them that I’m really not always that bad. I’m often someone with problems, someone whose life didn’t turn out the way she had planned.”

McCartney pauses a beat or two. “OK. Ursula does kill a lot, so that’s bad.” Then she chuckles heartily.

Clearly, she’s having a blast in this reworked version of the 2008 Broadway show based on Disney’s 1989 animated film, which itself was based loosely on the Hans Christian Andersen tale about a mermaid who yearns for a life on land.

McCartney, however, seems to enjoy being at sea. This is her third summer out of town and she’s able to bring her daughters along. “They’re always a huge inspiration to me, and I need them with me to be a happy girl.”

She credits director Casale for both the good time the show brings her and the positive reaction audiences have showered upon this Mermaid so far.

“His directing style is fast and energetic and always encourages individual growth,” McCa-rtney says of Casale. And he “has the loudest, most unique laugh I have ever heard, and he is not shy about it. The problem is, when he’s not there and you’ve relied on hearing it, you have to work harder. Isn’t he tricky? Even when he’s gone he’s still directing us.”

When Mermaid opened on Broadway six years ago, it was not a hit along the lines of The Lion King, which still roars today. Producers hope this retooled version will prove strong enough to make a bigger splash in New York.

Some of its songs are new, others were tanked. In the original Broadway show, most sea creatures suggested water movement via roller

skates. Now, several, including Ariel, glide and swirl on wires to “swim” in much the same way Peter Pan characters fly onstage.

No strings for Ursula, however. “I don’t move a whole lot because I am Ursula, who rules like a queen. I just come in with my side-kick eels and do my thing.” (Her eels, Flotsam and Jetsam, are still on wheels.)

McCartney was part of the original Broad-way workshop for Mermaid, so she’s in tune with how the show has evolved.

“There’s more heart and soul now,” she says, adding that her husband saw this version with their daughters and “I happen to know he got a lump in his throat.” This Mermaid “just makes more sense,” she says. Audiences, for example, learn why Ursula is the way she is.

Like the half-human, half-squid she plays, McCartney is the youngest in her family, “sort of always feeling like I had to prove myself, like I had to do better than my older sisters.” A na-tive of Chelmsford, Mass., she studied musical theater at Boston Conservatory of Music. That led a role in a 1987 musical, the fairly forgot-ten Sheboppin’, about four girls who work in a 1960s beauty parlor.

She’s been bopping (and belting) in bigger waters ever since. But it was Sheboppin’ that gave McCartney her professional credentials. She still howls at the memory of her mother’s reaction when she excitedly announced she’d earned her Actors’ Equity card:

“Oh, Elizabeth, not another charge card!”

If the average person were asked to de-scribe the typical Asheville resident, their answer would probably resemble recent “American Idol” winner Caleb Johnson

— young, left-of-center and decidedly rough around the edges. But while the tiny North Carolina town of 85,000 has a reputation for hippie-fied crustiness (think backpackers, brewpubs and tie-dyes), there’s much more to this liberal outpost than meets the eye.

Due to debt accrued during the Great Depression, Asheville’s downtown district was nearly a ghost town until the early 1990s, with many buildings empty and boarded up for 30 or 40 years. But thanks to a series of revitalization projects (including Pack Square and Pack Place), some key law

changes (allowing liquor to be sold by the drink and approving sidewalk dining) and investors squarely focused on developing small, independent businesses, the city’s renaissance began about the turn of the most recent century.

With the transformation of downtown came a deluge of transplants from major cities such as New York and San Francisco, all lured by Asheville’s natural beauty, clean mountain air and progressive attitude. Con-trary to the stereotypes, many newcomers were middle-aged entrepreneurs, including Chicago native Peter Pollay, the executive chef behind critically acclaimed Posana Café.

JOHN MacINNIS (Choreographer) is thrilled to be working on this production of The Little Mermaid. He choreographed the Japanese production of The Little Mermaid in Tokyo. He is the associate choreographer of Disney’s newest Broadway hit, Aladdin. He also choreographed Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in more than five European countries. In 2011 he served as the associate choreographer of the Tony Award-winning musical The Book of Mormon. Other credits include directing and choreographing the Olympic Medals Ceremonies at the 2010 and 2002 Winter Games. From 1999 to 2001 he directed and choreographed the Radio City Christmas Spectacular including the first international production in Mexico City.

FOR YOUR INFORMATIONTHE THEATREA fully restored 1929 “Movie Palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,678 seats, is a multiple-purpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballet, symphonies, concerts, movies, and private corporate events.

PRIVATE ROOMSThe Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, with accommodations for 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. TICKET OFFICEThe Fox Theatre Ticket Office is located in the arcade entrance to the theatre. The Ticket Office is open for walk up ticket sales Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., and Saturday,10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The Fox Theatre Ticket Office is not open on Sundays unless there is a performance. On event days, the Ticket Office opens two hours prior to show time. Doors to the Fox open one hour prior to show time. Tickets for all performances at the Fox may be purchased online at www.FoxTheatre.org, all Ticket Alternative outlets and all Atlanta-area Whole Foods Markets, by calling 855-285-8499, or by visiting the Fox Theatre Ticket Office in person during regular Box Office hours.

GROUP SALESThe Fox Theatre Group Sales Department offers discounts to Groups for most Broadway shows. The Group Sales office is open Monday-Friday from 9am to 5pm. Call 404 881-2000 or email foxgroup@foxtheatre.org.

CONCESSIONSConcession stands are located in the Spanish Room, main lobby, and on the mezzanine lobby level.

RESTROOMSRestrooms are located off the Main Lobby (downstairs), Mezzanine Lobby levels, and the Gallery level. Accessible restroom facilities are located in the Spanish Room and Accessible/Family restrooms are located through the Office door in the main lobby.

GIFT SHOPThe Fox Theatre operates a gift shop selling history books, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and an assortment of other theatre-related merchandise. The gift shop is located in the Spanish Room.

TOURSFox Theatre Tours are conducted Mondays and Thursdays at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 1:00 PM. Saturday tours are offered at 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Fox Theatre Tours are guided by Fox employees well-versed in the Fox’s history, current events, awards, and upcoming shows. Tickets for Fox Theatre Tours are available at the Fox Theatre Ticket Office or online at www.FoxAtlTix.com. Special Tours can range from backstage to architectural to a school or college group. LOST AND FOUNDLost and found items are turned in to the Event Staff ’s office. To check on lost items, please call 404-881-2119. Lost and found items will be retained for 30 days.

ABOUT ACCESSIBILITYThe Fox Theatre strives to make events accessible to all guests. If you require assistance during your visit to the Fox Theatre please seek out or ask for one of our Accessible Ambassadors. These staff members are attired in the traditional Fox Theatre uniform however also have gold braid and white gloves to make them easier to see. ELEVATORSElevators are located at the north end of each lobby. The elevators are available during all performances and make it possible to access each lobby without the use of stairs. Patrons should be aware that access to upper seating areas do involve stairs.

PARKINGParking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox Theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Ticket Office or by calling 855-285-8499. The Fox Theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned parking lots operating in the Fox Theatre district.

PERFORMANCE NOTESAll patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to be admitted to the theatre. Not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management, in conjunction with the wishes of the producers. Please turn off all pagers and cell phones prior to the beginning of each performance. Camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited. Backstage employees are represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.)

ETIQUETTE

1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission.

2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins.

3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting.

4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers.

5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point.

6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose.

7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show.

8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag.

9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic.

10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you.

11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

“People move to Asheville for the quality of life,” he says, “and chefs are no different. Asheville has a diversity of high-quality restau-rants because a lot of the chefs have worked in the big cities. We have great chefs coming to live in the mountains, in a diverse, open and welcoming community.”

What makes Asheville’s food scene different from, say, Atlanta’s or Charleston’s, is the remarkable number of places that have been certified by the Green Restaurant Association (GRA), the nonprofit organization devoted to helping restaurateurs become more environ-mentally sustainable. Of the 80 eateries in the Asheville Independent Restaurant Associa-tion (AIRA), 2 percent are Certified Green Restaurants, which led the GRA, in 2013, to name Asheville the nation’s first Green Dining Destination.

Pollay, who took over as AIRA president in October, suggests that the “green” ethos is tailor-made for Asheville. “It’s the perfect mentality, and one of the reasons why we did it. Asheville strives to be as sustainable as possible. We have a lot of environmental organizations that speak up for the community, because our surroundings are so beautiful that we don’t want things to be destroyed. It’s all intertwined.”

This symbiotic ecosystem of earth-friendly eateries has earned Asheville’s restaurant scene lots of media attention, including glowing articles in respected publications such as Bon Appetit and Food and Wine. Here are a few of the noteworthy green restaurants:

PLANT | You don’t have to be a vegan to appreciate chef Jason Sellers’ inventive cuisine, which uses no meat, dairy or anything made from animal byproducts. The restaurant, which opened in 2011, has been named one of the Top 20 vegan/vegetarian restaurants in the country by Food and Wine. Locally farmed/foraged ingredients make dishes such as the roasted Jerusalem artichokes (with lemon curd, pistachio gremolata and ancho chili sorghum) and Applewood Smoked Porto’House (a portobello mushroom steak served atop mus-tard-spiced chard with polenta) so intensely flavorful, you won’t miss a thing.

POSANA CAFE | From his in-house water fil-tration system to hand soap made from leftover kitchen grease, Culinary Institute of America honors grad Peter Pollay is an influential leader in the city’s green restaurant revolution. His menu is a model of creative simplicity, from the delicate balance of flavors in his Little Gem Lettuce Wraps (filled with tamari-glazed chick-en and Asian slaw) and the robust richness of Lobster Mac & Cheese (with ricotta gnocchi and aged cheddar) to amazing entrees such as Pecan Crusted Sunburst Farms Trout (with braised white beans, butternut squash puree and Granny Smith apple vinaigrette).

TUPELO HONEY | One of Asheville’s oldest green restaurants is also among its most successful, with eight locations from Charlotte and Raleigh and all the way to South Carolina and Tennessee. But it remains locally focused, working with more than 25 farms and artisans and supporting numerous community agricul-ture projects. ATLANTA BRAVES MUSEUM & HALL OF FAME TOURS | See Hank Aaron’s bat and ball from home run No. 715 and the 1995 World Series trophy. Learn about Babe Ruth’s days as a Boston Brave, Braves that served in the military and details on such greats as southpaw pitcher Warren Spahn, all-around good guy Dale Murphy and more contemporary players like Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, David Justice and Chipper Jones. More than 600 artifacts and photographs trace the team’s history from Boston (1871-1952) to Milwaukee (1953-65) to Atlanta (1966-present). ATLANTA CYCLORAMA & CIVIL WAR MUSEUM | Immerse yourself in a sweeping panorama of the Battle of Atlanta, fought in July 1864. The Cyclorama is in the world’s largest oil painting, measuring 42 feet tall and 358 feet in circumference. Its three-dimen-sional foreground is accompanied by music and narration, blending history with contemporary special effects. In the museum, you’ll discover war artifacts and a genuine steam locomotive known as the Texas, from the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862.

After exploring one of the South’s largest history museums, stroll through two acres of gardens, trails and woodland areas. The

ATLANTIC STATION | The city’s unoffi-cial shopping district. Picture a live-work-play community with great architecture, parks, special events and movies, a mix of housing, eateries … and shopping! From home furnishings to high fashion, bed sheets to basketball shoes, window shoppers and those in the mood to buy can browse more than 50 retailers. There is always something happening. Self-parking is free for the first two hours and goes up to $14 for 24 hours. If you catch a movie here, you can get your parking ticket stamped for another two free hours. There’s also on-street metered parking (credit cards accepted), plus valet and front-row premium parking.

THE BELTLINE | A former railway corridor turned walking, jogging, bicycling and chatting path, the BeltLine has become the go-to spot inside the Perimeter for

that perfect balance of exercise and socializing. The master plan calls for 22 miles of pedestri-an-friendly rail transit with 33 miles of multi-use trails that ultimately will connect 45 intown neighborhoods. More track is added every day. Nearby restaurants are taking note and opening back doors and windows onto the path so the BeltLine is also becoming a foodie haven. CENTENNIAL OLYMPIC PARK | A 21-acre site ideal perfect for a hot, sunny stroll and lunch at the outdoor restaurant Googie Burger. Get-ting too warm? You’re not a true Atlantan until you’ve gotten soaked in the Fountain of Rings, which has a nighttime show featuring pop music and light effects. The park features live music and family fun many days of the week, with larg-er parties, 5Ks and concerts on some weekends. Music at Noon is a lunchtime getaway featuring local bands. FOX THEATRE | Once the Yaarab Temple Shrine Mosque, then a movie palace, the Fox today is Atlanta’s home for Broadway shows. Grand Islamic and Egyptian architecture make the building itself a must-see. the 19th century, this rambling six-acre green space serves as a historic cemetery and public park. Where once Atlantans took Sunday car-riage rides through Oakland, visitors now mean-der on foot through lush gardens and memorial monuments in distinct architecture styles: Victorian, Egyptian, Gothic, Greek Revival, etc. Visit the graves of such famed figures as the Inman family, Hoke Smith, Maynard Jackson and Margaret Mitchell. PIEDMONT PARK | Once a late 1800s racing ground for horse enthusiasts, Piedmont Park is now one of the most photographed bits of the city, with panoramic skyscraper views hover-ing above the tree line. REYNOLDS PLANTATION | Got golf? Reynolds Plantation, on Lake Oconee, does, and lots of it. It has five courses designed by world-class professionals: Bob Cupp, Rees

Three galleries house the exhibitions “Rolls Down Like Water: The American Civil Rights Movement”; “Spark of Conviction: The Global Human Rights Movement”; and “Voice to the Voiceless: The Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection.” The Center also has a temporary exhibit wall. The exhibits include handwritten letters from Martin Luther King Jr., displays about racially segregated buses and lunch count-ers in the American South and on dictators past and present, including the Soviet Union’s Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot of Cambodia and Syria’s Bashar al-Assad. “A lot of young people don’t under-stand what happened,” says William Harbour, who spent 49 days in a Mississippi jail in 1961 for going to the white side of a bus station. “It’s amazing that young people don’t understand that you couldn’t ride on the front seat of a bus or go in a restaurant and sit down at a counter.”

STONE MOUNTAIN PARK | One gi-ant chunk of granite has become Georgia’s most-visited attraction. Stone Mountain is a blend of new and old, featuring the world’s largest bas-relief carving of Confederate figures Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson and new theme parks with lots of fami-ly-friendly activities. Hike the mile-long trail up the mountain and catch the Skyride down for an aerial view. Explore 3,200-plus acres of nature, which include walking paths, camping, paddle-boats and hiking. Revisit the past by making candles or window-shopping in the themed re-created village or by visiting a historic grist mill. Throughout the summer there are concerts and festivals, and, as any Atlantan knows, the Lasershow Spectacular is a must. People picnic in the evening as images are projected onto the side of the mountain, accompanied by music.

Since then, the Fox has become a go-to destination for audiences, historians and tourists alike. The theater has showcased unforgettable performances from the likes of Elvis Presley and Madonna, in addition to hosting countless Broadway shows, including the world premiere tour of The Phantom of the Opera in 1991.

Hundreds of notable personalities have played the Fox stage since its reopening in 1975. Many leave a signed headshot behind as a souvenir. The walls in the Fox’s main office are lined with these portraits — Liza Minnelli, Ted Nugent, Lou Rawls, Trisha Yearwood, Ozzy Osbourne, Kenny G, Jon Bon Jovi and Whitney Houston are a few of the names immortalized forever throughout the Fox Theatre.

The Fox Theatre, Atlanta’s memory maker, has been a renowned concert and event venue since 1929. Originally conceived as headquarters for Atlanta’s 5,000-member Shriners organization, the Fox has evolved and survived the far-reaching effects of the Great Depression and the introduction of multiplexes in the 1960s. Despite its challenges, the Fox has hosted some of the world’s biggest shows and touring acts.

The “Save the Fox” campaign in the 1970s, which raised funds to preserve the iconic theater and prevent its demolition, included benefit concerts from such wide-ranging acts as Lynyrd Skynryd and Liberace.
