July 2014 Newsletter
EditorialEditorialEditorialEditorial We have been very lucky to experience an extended summer over the last two months, which has
had a positive effect on the WPA events calendar. Not only have the events reflected positive
participation numbers but we’ve witnessed great club participation, support and camaraderie.
WPA has reached a new record of licensed members; this total will soon break the 13 000 members
mark. 5 Clubs currently have more than 450 members, the top three being: K-Way VOB (1068), New
Balance Multisport (914) and Lion of Africa Itheko (740). WPA currently has 7 new clubs which have
been initiated in 2014, which are well supported and are showing great growth.
WPA is thrilled with the performances of the track & field athletes. Three top WPA Track and Field
athletes participated at the SA Open and Southern Region Championships. Carla Johnson (Gold,
Long Jump) Kyle Appel (Bronze, 200m) and Tiaan Smit (Hurdles). At the African Youth Games in
Botswana both Carla Johnson (Silver) and Kyle Appel (Bronze) medaled again with some brilliant
performances, unfortunately Tiaan injured himself in competition. Carla and Kyle were then both
selected to represent South Africa at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene, USA. Rocco
van Rooyen was selected to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Samantha Pretorius has been selected as a member of the provisional CAA African Senior
Championship team.
The Cross Country leagues have shown great growth to date; participation across the categories has
increased. We must ensure that our participating senior athletes are performing to the best possible
standards, in order for WPA to select a strong team to participate at the SA Cross Country
Championships.
WPA members also achieved good positioning at the Comrades Marathon and congratulations to
the following members Mthandazo Qhina (26th), Kerry-Ann Marshall (14th), Ursula Turck (19th & 3rd
Women 40+) and Vladimir Kotov (3rd Men 50+). The local Road Running events are well spread over
the calendar and last year, on numerous occasions, the changing weather conditions did not stop
the enthusiasm of the participating athletes.
WPA once again hosted the very successful WPA KIDS Holiday Club from 30 June to 4 July at
Vygieskraal Stadium. Each day saw 220 children between the ages of 8 and 15 being transported to
and from the host venue. Children were well entertained and educated in a secure environment
with fun teambuilding and fitness activities, games, educational and life skills, as well as an exciting
excursion to the Cape Town Stadium and Urban Park. There were also competitive elements and the
winning teams received trophies at the end of the week. Children received a healthy and nutritional
breakfast and lunch each day. We would like to express sincere thanks to the organisations that
made this holiday club possible; Rotary Claremont with their generous sponsorship, the City of Cape
Town, Peninsula Beverages, DCAS, Parmalat and Cape Town Market, we thank them for their
generous partnerships, contribution and support in what WPA is aiming to achieve.
WPA was the stronghold of top athletes during past years and we need to maintain our position.
Mass participation is growing the sport but individual top performances maintain a healthy core of
athletics within the province. Selection and representation for WPA teams and National teams must
be the goal for our top athletes and coaches.
Together we can make a difference in Western Province Athletics again.

RACE WALKING
WPA Race Walking Grand Prix 2 Highlights:
On 17 May 2014 the WPARWC hosted the second Grand Prix of 2014. 77 walkers took on various
distances. Here are a few highlights.
In the 30km, Jurgen Spencer M70 of Bellville AC braved the early morning chill to win gold in 3:15:08.
In the Masters Women 10km, Spartan Harriers took all three podium positions. Althea Janari took the
top spot in a time of 1:02:10.
2013 and 2014 SA Junior Championships silver medalist, Juandray Pieterse from Velocity AC walked a
comfortable race winning in 53:55. Carel vd Merwe from AMSAC got the silver in 55:45, with Lorenzo
Theron from New Balance MS getting the bronze in 56:06.
In the 3km Development race for boys and girls everyone at the event received a glimpse of WPA’s
race walking future. SA Schools Champion Gerhard Eckley (13 years) from Strand won the race in
16:22 with Chadley Isaacs (13 years) from Spartan Harriers second in 17:53.
22 Athletes from various schools in Atlantis participated in the development races with loads of
walking potential on show. We will certainly see more Champions coming out of Atlantis.
Simons Town’s Thomas Mbiza Club also participated for the first time with development athletes who
graduated from the WPARWC Development programme.
The Interclub Trophy was convincingly won by Spartan Harriers.
Novice programme: “The bug might just bite”
The WPARWC has successfully introduced a Novice programme in 2013. Here interested athletes
who want to give race walking a try can participate in the 10km event at any of the WPA Race
Walking Grand Prix’s. Finishers will receive medals but will not feature within the official results as
judging of novice walkers are relaxed to allow the novice to look and learn prior to entering as a
competitive walker. Novice results will be indicated separately on the results sheet. The novice
classification will only be valid for one race. Thereafter the walkers can enter one of the competitive
events.
So if you are giving Race Walking a thought…we invite you to give it a try.

Walking League 2015: “I’ve seen it on the race flyer - So what are WPA Road League Walks?”
League walks are held in conjunction with road running races with the start ten (10) minutes after the
running event. Distances are kept to 10km and are on a tarred road surface, generally following the
same route as the running race. You can participate in League walks as a social walker or
competitive walker.
There is normally a series of league walks over the year that will qualify a walker to score individual
points to become the top male or female walker for each calendar year. These points also count
toward overall interclub points. Points are calculated according to League Performance
Tables based on finishing time performances in 5-year age categories with a maximum of ten points
earned per race. The top walking club for the year is eligible to win the League floating trophy.
League Performance Tables are obtainable from the WPARWC. The League winners and winning
Club get recognized at the annual WPA Awards.
Competitors must wear official club colours, provincial licenses, age category tags and a “WALKER”
tag on the back and front of their vests to qualify for league points and prizes. Novice walkers are
encouraged to participate and will be able to compete as long as they wear a temporary license.
Junior walkers must wear a “J” tag on the front and back of their vest. “WALKER” tags are
compulsory for prize money winnings at all league races.
These league races are judged according to our own domestic WPA rules which are more relaxed,
because the IAAF competition rule does not make provision for these road races. Walkers are
judged for correct race walking technique by judges who will be on the road following the athletes
in their vehicles. They will roam the route, covering all the front athletes and then moving to the back
of the field of walkers to identify athletes failing to comply with proper race walking technique.
A judge may show a yellow paddle to an athlete if an athlete is in danger of failing to comply with
proper race walking technique, which is aimed to assist the athlete, so that they can correct their
walking technique. Running in a walking race will automatically disqualify a walker.
When a walker who has been disqualified by the judges, reaches the finishing line, the Chief Judge
will inform him/her that they have been disqualified. Their race card will be removed from the
finishing results board making the athlete ineligible for any prize money. The official results will also
reflect a DQ next to that athlete’s name.
League walks are ideal for those who want to keep walking throughout the year and not just dust off
their walking shoes for mass participation events.
Clubs who would like to add a league walk to their event for the first time can contact the WPARWC
Communication: “Let’s talk the Walk.”
The WPARWC email group aim to serve as many WPA walkers as possible by sending out event news
and results. Please send us an email with the title “add me” to [email protected] if you are
not part of the group and want to receive any future communication. Any queries on walking
related matters can be sent to this email address.

K-WAY VOB
K-Way Table Mountain Race 15 June 2014
The Table Mountain Race was started 36 years ago as a “Fun Run” and at that time it was no more
than a rough” track” up and around the dam. Over the years the “track” has improved and is now
passable to 4 x 4 vehicles and the more energetic runner. The race has always been limited to 250
runners and after completing the race five times an embroidered permanent number is allocated.
This year the runners arrived at Constantia Nek to collect their entries in a raging storm with rain
pelting down. Trees had blown down on the road to the Nek. What would be happening on the
route? In the history of the race only in 1995 the race was postponed due to bad weather. Would
2014 be another cancellation? The team of marshals in 4 x 4 vehicles went on the route to find a
tree had indeed blown down and with some team work managed to move it. This resulted in the
race being delayed which was a blessing as then the rain stopped and while it was still cold and
windy the 173 runners who had braved the weather were ready to run.
The race was won by Phumlani of Nedbank in a time of 66:57 minutes and the ladies race by Ellie
Courts of Celtic. The King of the Mountain was Dion Middelkoop of K-Way VOB and the Queen of
the Mountain Bianca Tait of Satori.
The greatest attraction is always the opportunity to run on our beautiful mountain. K-Way VOB uses
this race to “give back” and the proceeds of the race together with donations from the runners are
given to Sanparks Honorary Rangers.
UCT ATHLETIC CLUB
The WP junior shot put record has once again been broken! At a KZN Athletics Winter League track
and field meet Zane Weir put the shot a mammoth 18,30 metres, bettering his own mark set just two
months earlier. In fact, this was the fifth time in 2014 that the first year BCom Economics and Finance
student has improved the record, and he must have felt right at home doing so considering that he
hails from the Kwa-Zulu Natal province.
Zane is undefeated in the u19 age category this year and he holds the titles of Western Province,
South African and Southern Regional junior champion. In addition, he has broken the UCT record in
the senior shot put (i.e. using a 7,26kg shot instead of his usual 6kg one) on two occasions, and it was
a mark that had stood for 55 years.

CAPE TOWN MARATHON
MAJOR NEW SPONSORSHIP DEAL FOR CAPE TOWN MARATHON
Investment from financial services giant to propel race onto world marathon stage
Cape Town, 3rd July 2014: The Cape Town Marathon
has secured a major new naming rights sponsorship
from financial services giant Sanlam. The sponsorship
will allow the marathon – renamed the Sanlam Cape
Town Marathon with immediate effect – to fast-track
its plans of being classified as Africa’s first World
Marathon Majors (WMM) race and in the process
boost city tourism by attracting athletes from around
the globe.
Yegs Ramiah, Chief Executive: Sanlam Brand, says that Sanlam is delighted at the opportunity to be
the official headline sponsor of the Cape Town Marathon. “Sanlam is pleased to sponsor an event
that places Cape Town and our continent on the global stage alongside famous marathon cities
such as Boston, New York, Tokyo and London. As a diversified financial services player with an
extensive footprint into 11 African countries, we take pride in creating an opportunity for
international athletes to compete in a global event on the continent, in particular African athletes.
“The sport of running is easily accessible and within everyone’s means and by its very nature requires
determination, dedication and the belief that a lot can come from very little. Just like wealth
creation, a craft that we as a company are more familiar with, the sport of running is a journey
without an end, the joy and value of which are unqualified. We truly believe that an event such as
this will have a real and positive influence by enabling people to live their best possible lives.
“We look forward to a long and positive association with the Cape Town Marathon and wish all the
participants success come race-day.”
South African long-distance Olympic medalist Elana Meyer, spokesperson for The Sanlam Cape
Town Marathon and member of its EXCO says they have the support of and presence at the race of
IAAF and will now apply for Silver Label classification. After that, the potential for this race will be
immeasurable. “We are extremely pleased to have a leading financial services group like Sanlam
working with us to realise the potential of this very special event.”
Relaunched in February 2014, under a joint partnership agreement between the City of Cape Town,
Western Province Athletics (WPA) and ASEM Running, the 42.2km race will provide the culmination of
a three-day long ‘Festival of Running’ in Africa’s Mother City, which unfolds as a 10km Peace Run, a
4.2km Peace Run, two Peace Trail Runs, a Peace Relay and a Peace Mile Race. Elana Meyer and
Rugby World Cup 1995 winning captain, Francois Pienaar, have joined forces to present this event
and drive the vision of the Cape Town Marathon becoming one of the WMM.
“We offer contestants the largest sum of prize money for a South African standard marathon, with
cash prizes exceeding R1.6-million, which is in line with international city marathon benchmarks and
a requirement to be considered for WMM and IAAF membership,” says Meyer.
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon will be over a race weekend on 20 and 21 September 2014.
In June this year, the listed South African financial services group celebrated its 96th birthday,
unveiling a refreshed brand identity, including a brand new pay-offline, titled Wealthsmiths. The
group’s modernised brand more accurately reflects Sanlam, as it is today – a global, fully diversified
financial services group, operating in 11 countries across Africa, as well as in India, Malaysia, the
United Kingdom and business interests in the USA and Australia.
The family of six Major events include: Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, Virgin Money London
