I’m home!!! The 92nd Civitan International World Congress was an unforgettable experience! Tallinn, Estonia was an excellent choice for this venue and the hotel was first rate. Many pictures will be shared by the Florida delegation, so you will see that Tallinn, the Nordic capital of Estonia, is simply charming and indeed the jewel of the Baltic region.

The opening ceremonies were especially exciting for the Florida District because one of our clubs, the Uptown Civitan Club in Jacksonville, FL, was spotlighted and received the Dr. Courtney W. Shropshire Outstanding Club Award. Con-gratulations Uptown!!! Also, our own Mattie Fraser, Senior International Director, Region Two, was a 2012 recipient of the International Honor Key. Mattie also was presented a Junior Fellow. Both honors were so well deserved! Con-gratulations Mattie!!! Civitan Lake Eola received First Place for the largest percentage of increased members – 292%. Congratulations Lake Eola!!! All this along with great entertainment made for a great way to start the convention.

There were business sessions, group photos, an International service project, workshops and seminars, training sessions, the President’s Council Social, optional tours, outstanding entertainment, election of international officers, membership extravaganza and closing banquet. After our body clocks adjusted to the seven-hour time difference, we were practically going non-stop. We met the president and secretary from the club established in Kenya, East Africa last year, Julius and Andrew. With leaders like them, Civitan will grow rapidly in their country.

During the awards meeting on Thursday, Florida was once again recognized. Uptown won 1st place for Outstanding Service to Those with Disabilities and 2nd place for their Club Newsletter; Lake Eola won 2nd place for Club Website; and Florida received the Leadership Award for President’s Council members. WAY TO GO, FLORIDA CIVITANS!!!

Robert A. (Bob) Robinson, Canada District East, was elected as our 2012-2013 Presi-dent-Elect and Faye Evans, Atlanta, GA, was elected as our 2012-2014 International Director, Region Two. Florida had 17 certified voting delegates in attendance. In-coming President Joe Parker introduced the governors for 2012-2013 and announced

the theme for the coming year … “Civitan ... Passion Speaks with Action”!

I thoroughly enjoyed renewing friendships with 18 of the 22 North America Governors in attendance. Under the leadership of our current International President, Bill

Buscher, Enriching Lives Through Service, became more than a theme for us but rather it became our commitment for a way of life.

Having said that, Bill Buscher and his lovely wife, Sharon, will be our special guests at the Florida District Convention, September 14-15, 2012, at the Wyndham Orlando Resort! We still have a couple of months to increase our membership, increase our candy box and coin box contributions, increase our Civitans at the Helm, and estab-lish a new Civitan Club in the Florida District. Let’s show Bill and Sharon why we are

called the “Fabulous Florida District”! LanaLanaLanaLana

The Flagship Project for Civitan International is the Civitan International Research Center at UAB Birmingham. One way to help meet our commitment of up to $1 million per year is through donations to Civitans at the Helm. Donations made directly to Civitans at the Helm count as do donations to the BreakThru Golf Tournament, Putt N Chip, and coin box (NOT candy box). Money donated to the Helmsman program is being generously matched, once again, by the Chesapeake Foundation. The sooner you get your money in for Civitans at the Helm, the more likely you are to have that money matched. Listed below are those clubs who have already reached the Helmsman (the minimum to qualify for matching funds), Navigator, Captain, or Admiral level. If your club’s name is not on this list, you still have time to receive the matching funds. Individuals are also encouraged to donate. Your contribution will be matched too. Just list your club name so your club can receive credit for your donation.

Clubs who have attained Helmsman or above are: Central, Clearwater, Naples, North Tampa, Plant City, Seminole, Sunset, Tallahassee, Tampa Metro, and Uptown.

Clubs who have made donations and are close to reaching the Helmsman level are: Citrus, Florida’s First Coast, Frontier, Leesburg, South Jacksonville, Southpoint, and Treasure Coast.

If your club is not listed here, that means that the most recent report does not show a donation from your club. You still have time to get your donations in for Civitans at the Helm and help meet our commitment to our outstanding Civitan International Research Center. Please do it today!!

Florida is currently a Helmsman District. Let’s make it at least a Navigator or Captain district.

THE CHAPLAIN’S CORNER … PHIL NORDSTROM

Two lines of the Civitan Creed are: MY SOUL knows no fear but its own unworthiness, and MY BELIEF, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. How often do you think about these and make a conscious effort to prac-tice them? It is so easy to get caught up in our minds with what is going on in our daily lives and forget about our souls or our beliefs. Each of us needs to remember that we are God’s child and if we look to Him, He will take care of us and lead us in the direction He would have us go. The following poem reminds us that no matter how tough our road might be, if we allow Him to lead us, our cup will over-flow.

Count your Blessings … Author Unknown

I’ve never made a fortune, And it’s probably too late now.

But I don’t worry about that much I’m happy anyhow.

And as I go along life’s way, I’M reaping better than I sowed.

I’m drinking from my saucer, ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.

I remember times when things went wrong, My faith wore somewhat thin.

But all at once the dark clouds broke, And the sun peed through again.

So, Lord, help me not to gripe Although the tough rows I have hoed.

I’m drinking from my saucer ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.

If God gives me strength and courage When the way grows steep and rough,

I’ll not ask for other blessings, I’m already blessed enough.

And may I never be too busy, To help others bear their loads.

Then I’ll keep drinking from my saucer, ‘Cause my cup has overflowed

When I think of how many people, In this world have it worse than I do.

I realize just how blessed Most of us really are.

Has your cup overflowed? As Civitans our objective and duty should be to relax and reach out to help others. Let’s all remember this and resolve to reach out to others so, in doing this, we will be ENRICHING LIVES THROUGH SERVICE. I encourage all of us to do our best from now on to make sure our cup has overflowed. Have a blest Civitan summer. In His Grace,

Phil

Every club is “Enriching Lives Through Service” this year and EVERY club deserves to be recog-nized for your hard work. One way we celebrate your efforts is through the Annual District Awards, presented at the September District Convention. And this year, it would be wonderful if every club would submit even one application and win an award! The award applications and “tips” have been emailed to all club presidents and District Board members, who, in turn should forward the documents to the club awards chair and anyone else interested in working on your awards submission. Award applications will be due August 15. If you would like the awards manual sent directly to you, please contact Immediate Past Governor and District Awards Chair Lori Clapp, [email protected], 727-526-3319. If you need any help with preparing the applications, feel free to contact Lori. She is very willing to offer suggestions to help you get started and prepare winning applications.

““““STRENGTHEN YOUR TEAM” ” ” ” … Helen Galloway,Training Coordinator

“The persistence of each individual adds to the strength of the team.”

Dedicated club leaders are instrumental in seeing that our clubs are prepared to be successful and carry out the mission of Civitan. I urge club presidents who have not already done so to hold the officer elections for 2013-14 as soon as possible as the report of new officers was to be submitted July 1. Please send your new officer report to Beth Towns at Civitan International, [email protected] as well as to our incoming governor Bob Brightman and to me. Many clubs have held their elections and submitted their officer report forms and several have registered for Club Leadership Training. Thank you! As you know, to assure quality leadership and success, our club’s President, President-elect, Secretary and Treasurer must be trained for their respective positions. Secretaries and Treasurers may train online via the Civitan International website. Our Presidents and President-elects are required, unless trained for the same position last year (for a club to be in good standing), to attend a very beneficial training session offered by Civitan International. We are very lucky that our district may do this as the program has received excellent reviews throughout the country. It offers an innovative educational curriculum for the benefit of these officers. Officers may attend any of the workshops regardless of the area! You may want to attend in Memphis, TN while on vacation! Some of the closest locations for Florida Civitans include: Jacksonville, FL - July 28 Albany, GA - July 28 Columbia, SC - August 11 Orlando, FL - August 18 Thank you for caring about your club and your service to those in need. If you have any questions, please let me know.

ENRICHING OTHERS…AND OURSELVES…Helen Galloway,Growth & Retention Coordinator

Only a life lived in the service to others is worth living.” Albert Einsteiin

In living our Civitan Creed, we will enrich the lives of others and our lives as well. During the last few months of our year, we can do this!

Congratulations to the following clubs which have shared Civitan during June and now have more hands to help them serve others in their communities. These include: Arlington, Naples (2) and St. Petersburg. Also, the Florida District with Lana Suggs as Governor is number four in the country with the best percentage of new mem-bers sponsored by club and district officers! Let’s make it to No. 1!!

Along with the benefits realized by your club with new members, remember the special awards offered by Civitan International. For details go to: www.civitan.org/12EnrichingLivesSponsorshipAwards.pdf. There is still time to hold a Membership meeting and or social to “Share Civitan, Share Success” and enrich the lives of others and your club.

CLUB BEAMS The third quarter of the Civitan year is also a busy one for our clubs as projects are completed, special awards are presented in the community and members begin to enjoy vacations and the warm days of summer. But, Florida Civitans are committed and continually serve others! A sizable Florida group also enjoyed a special vacation as they attended the exciting International Convention in Tallinn, Estonia. Arlington – Several club members volunteered at the State Special Olympics games helping the athletes compete at the tennis facility. They had an awesome time working with such enthusiastic and happy players. Kelly Groce was thrilled that one young lady came on the court and announced she “was so pumped!” She could not hit any of her serves over the net, but she just said the net was too high! Kelly agreed with her and they had a good laugh. Many members volunteered at a successful special community event in June and raised money for the club, collected 200 lbs. of food for hungry chil-dren and collected clothing for many women hoping to enter the work force! Club President Lee Conrey and Kelly Kroce present a check to Michelle Jacobs of Special Olympics

Citrus – The club’s infamous fundraiser, the 5th Annual Putt Pub Crawl, raising funds for a Quest House and other area projects, was held the end of April and was one of the most successful ever. Many unique holes were offered this year and tested everyone’s abilities. But a fun time was had by all! Discussions are now underway for another fundraiser for the club – perhaps a dominoes or poker tournament!

Civitan Lake Eola – A busy summer is underway as the club is kicking off a professional development program using Prezi in presentations led by incoming club president, John Dietz. Future seminars are being scheduled on social media options. The Summer Trivia Series (August 2, 23 and Sept. 13 with $1,000 prize money) is being planned as well as another kickball game for the athletically (and not so athletically) gifted, a great fellowship opportunity. The club will be joining other community groups to paint the hallways at Lee Middle School and working at Clean the World. A work team is also beginning plans for an area-wide Golden Heart Awards Reception next spring. Check out the club’s web-site, www.CivitanLakeEola.com.

Clearwater – This special club celebrated their 60th anniversary in May and noted that the 21 members represent over 322 years of Civitan service! And, more than half the members work full time! Congratulations Clearwater! The group is now busy with their sponsorship of the Challenger Baseball season. The community is always very appreciative of the work done by these Civitans in running the concession stand at these games. Club members are well organized for this endeavor with work teams sharing the duties. And, best wishes are extended to longtime member Frank Kelley and wife, Kim, on his move to a new job in Texas. Frank and Kim were treated to a farewell dinner in June just before their move to Fort Worth. Frank will be sorely missed by the club and the district. He started as a Junior Civitan and has been an energetic, dedicated member for many years serving as governor in 2009-2010.

Florida’s First Coast—The annual quilt drawing for this club raised $3,700 for the American Cancer Society. Way to go Flor-ida’s First Coast and the American Cancer Society! Great job. In addition, they presented $1,573.54 to The ARC of St. Johns from a tennis tournament. Joe Proctor, Gwen Dasher , and President Arddy Farrell presented the check to ARC’s Manny Enriquez

Frontier -- The 12th Annual Frontier Club’s Charity Tea was held in April resulting in a mammoth donation for women through Mother’s Cupboard. The club again spent a Saturday morning at Clean the World and have served food at the Coalition for the Homeless on two evenings. Meetings have been cut back for the busy summer, but a social/membership meeting will be held the end of July.

CLUB BEAMS … two

Lake Eola– This club was pleased to be recognized by Civitan International with a 2nd place award for Outstanding Club Website. Way to go webmaster John Dietz!!

Leesburg – During the year, this club has added new members, some younger, to the club roster. But always apprecia-tive of dedicated and faithful members, such as Paul and Florence Deeley, they have adjusted to serve the couple. No longer able to drive and having moved to a lovely assisted living facility, members pick them up to attend meetings. In-coming president, Kathy Parrish, however, came up with a great idea – take the meeting to them. In June, the club members gathered at the new home of Florence and Paul and all had a wonderful time and made it a very special day for the couple.

Naples – The club continues to support the Collier Challenger Little League Baseball Team with uniforms and equipment. Funds for this were raised at the Naples Shining Stars Show dinner-dance. The initial practice game at Veteran’s Park was kicked off with the Pledge of Allegiance by club member, WWII veteran and Past International President Syd Fishman. To cele-brate Civitan Awareness Month in April, members joined their Junior Civitan club members in an educational gathering with great speakers and a pizza dinner. Busy members also volun-teered at the Taste of Collier event benefitting the Heil Luther-inger MS organization and also solicited and delivered donations to the Food Pantry in Everglades City. The club presented $1000 scholarships to a Junior Civitan Anjali Desai from Golden Gate HS and to Tiffany Gavin of Naples HS. These were pre-sented by Past International Presidents and club members, Bill Pearson and Syd Fishman. In June, 8 new members were initi-ated into the club – Congratulations!! Collier Challenger Little League Baseball Team, with Syd Fishman, PIP, kicking off with the Pledge

North Tampa – Once again this small club has made a great improvement in the community. The annual “Paint Your Heart Out” in the Tampa area always gets members out with paint, paint brushes, ladders and the enthusiasm to paint where needed. Everyone feels they made a difference when standing back and seeing what was accomplished for the home owner. This year an elderly lady was so appreciative of the work done by club members. She was thrilled and could not thank them enough!

Pine Castle – Each meeting for this club provides fun-filled projects and entertainment for these special members with the assistance of their sponsoring club, the Uptown Club. Members celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, had a doggone good time in April with the arrival of June, or “June Bug,” a 3-month hold Labrador puppy being trained as a guide dog, sang and danced with the PACE Girls Chorus, and made Mother’s Day cards and bookmarks. Members were privi-leged to have two veterans present a Memorial Day program which included a look at uniforms, medals and ribbons received by the two men. One interesting item was a replica of a gold medal awarded by the King of Saudi Arabia as thanks for participation in Operation Desert Storm in Kuwait. Pine Castle recently celebrated its 60 anniversary and this club celebrated its 23rd anniversary, DuVal Malone, Elaine Hall, Sharon Kantor, Diane Young, Mary Jo Marjenhoff, Nancy Darlow and her granddaughter, Mattie Fraser and her husband, and Cathy Grant

Heart of Florida - Will participate with other clubs in the Orlanda area in a new area-wide service project that was be-gun six years ago by the Treasure Coast Civitan Club that honors the siblings of special needs children; it is called the Golden Heart Award. The event will be held in March or April at a venue to be chosen. Each club will secure five applicants and will have two club members serve on project committees. There will be a project brainstorming meeting in December. Watch for more information on this great area-wide project.

CLUB BEAMS … three

St. Petersburg -- In April club members enjoyed a wonderful 90th Anniversary luncheon recognizing the major impact the club has made in the community through the years and was pleased to initiate two new members, David Crowe and Roger Stanford. Congratulations! At the end of each school year, the club recognizes two graduating seniors with $1000 scholar-ships for their exemplary academic, leadership and community service accomplishments. This year both were members of the St. Petersburg High Junior Civitan Club. Their Annual Police & Fire Awards Luncheon is also held this time of year. This 26th Annual event saw three officers honored. The award recipients are selected by their peers from their departments. Civitan members always look forward to celebrating the service of their local police and fire organizations. The 75 year old St. Peters-burg Beach Club has been used for events and parties by members and charitable organizations, summer camp and other celebrations. Beach Club Board President, Pete Galietta, indicates this summer has definitely been a busy time of year – make your reservations now. President Robert Schroeder presented a $500 check to Morning Star School

South Jacksonville – As is tradition, the Civitan Club of South Jacksonville has awarded Cecil B. Carroll Scholarships to two excellent graduates. Emily Tillo, a graduate of Stanton College Preparatory School, and an officer of the Stanton Jun-ior Civitan Club for three years, has given her time in numer-ous community activities. The other recipient, Allison McClain, was Valedictorian of her class at Christ’s Church Academy and has been very active in her community particu-larly tutoring younger students and worked with HEAL (Healing Every Autistic Life). The scholarship is in honor of the club’s founder and first president, Cecil B. Carroll, whose daughter, Barbara, has followed in her father’s footsteps with the South Jacksonville Club. Barbara Carroll, and President Randall Duncan with the scholarship recipients, Emily Tillo and Allison McClain

Southpoint – Club members were especially pleased to have a visit from member and charter president, Sandi Herrington. Sandi moved to Texas last fall to be close to her son’s family, especially two beautiful grandchildren! She remains a member of the Southpoint Club. Several activities have kept the group busy: assembling fleece blankets for Project Linus, a national organization for seriously ill or traumatized children, working at the popular TPC (Tournament Players Champion Golf Tourna-ment) and served dinner for 100 campers and buddies at Camp Promise. Members also really enjoyed a Bunko Social…winners or not, all had a great time! The club was also thrilled to have charter president and member, Sandi Herrington, who moved to Texas to be near her son and his family visit us. Sandi is really enjoying her grandchildren! A social/volunteer activity was held at Karen Bullock’s home to assemble these beautiful fleece blankets for Project Linus Karen Bullock, Jackie Kelly, Mattie Fraser, Carri Kroehler, Kathy Christopher, and Adair Harris

CLUB BEAMS … four Sunset – This club was honored to be nominated by ACT of Volusia for a United Way Civic Organization Volunteer Award. Though not a winner, the club was extremely honored to be among the elite group of nominees to have been recognized in this way by ARC and United Way! The dedicated Sunset members are all winners! Being involved in the annual Volusia County Law Enforcement Torch Run is an important annual event for the group and they again provided the refreshments at the finish line.

Special condolences to club members on the loss May 31 of “The Energizer Bunny” Ethel Zoller”. She became a dedi-cated member of the club after calling on Sunset for help at the Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run in 2000. President Ruth Phelan noted that “she worked personally and faithfully for all developmentally disabled events, rum-mage sales, recruitment dinners, and every fundraiser. So much more to say of her, so many memories that fill out hearts. We miss her so much!”

Tallahassee – Sadly, Gene Caruthers, dedicated member of this club since 2000, passed away the beginning of May. Gene had shown a passion for Civitan and served as president of the club as well as other offices. His good friend and fellow Civitan, Clarence Smith, said “although Gene had not been in good health, it didn’t stop him for leading the club to excel in many ways. The club will miss his leadership and encouragement to grow as a major part of the community.”

Tampa Metro — Tampa Metro celebrated their 85th Anniversary with a dinner and trivia contest at Lee Roy Selmon’s restaurant. They also have been involved in vari-ous activities including honoring their Outstanding Citizen of the Year, visited A Kid’s Place, handled awards at multiple State, Area and County Special Olympics competitions including Equestrian, Track/Field/Cyclic, Aquatics and Golf. They wel-comed new member Terry Ann Martin into their club. Four members had a wonder-ful time at the Civitan International Convention in Tallinn, Estonia. Pictured at Special O Equestrian event … Jeanne Davison (back) and Lori Clapp (front) And other TampaMetro members and family helping out

Treasure Coast – Due to many of the members vacationing dur-ing the summer, meetings have been canceled. However, a de-lightful social was held July 4th as available members joined the Burrows at their home on the intercoastal in Jensen Beach to watch the fireworks. (Editor Note: Shown right is a picture of those receiving the Golden Heart Award at the Banquet held on March 23. The picture was not available for the Sunbeam April issue, but I wanted you to see a wonderful group of the award recipients!!)

Uptown – Congratulations to this special club for winning the Dr. Courtney W. Shropshire Outstanding Club Award for 2010-2011. This is the 10th time that they have been selected as the top club internationally! Several members are involved in an interesting new project for the club. They are assisting young adults with dis-abilities run a “Bark’N Howl” Bakery. They make all kinds of gourmet dog biscuits, market them and keep ledgers of their sales. Other projects included volunteering at the TPC, the Very Special Arts event at Cummer Museum, the PACE Center for Girls Graduation, Ronald McDonald House and Clara White Mission meals. The club initiated more new members in May and are continually working to invite others to enjoy the tenets of Civitan. With important commu-nity speakers, socials, and education programs for new members they have welcomed close to 10 new members this year. One spe-cial recognition in April highlighted Beauty, their wonderful meeting server. She had a baby in April and members gathered money for a gift card for her and Gayle Kanak crocheted a baby afghan, hat and booties for the new arrival. In May, Uptown celebrated their 29th anniversary. Many past presidents attended and a number shared their memories of their year as president. JUNIOR CIVITAN … Penny Bonawitz

The Junior Civitan Florida District held the District Convention at Bishop Moore High School Media Center, Orlando, on April 21, 2012. We had to do some rescheduling from the original venue but everything worked out and all in atten-dance had a great time. Governor Sam Dempster opened the meeting at 11 a.m. with business notes and then all went outside for a rousing game of name basketball.

Back indoors Rebecca Algero spoke about her time at Dance- A-Thon and encouraged everyone to participate next year. Daniel Bowen spoke about the District Project - Polar Plunge and how we are going to do that again next year to raise money for Special Olympics here in Florida. Lunch and a game of Human Bingo followed and by the end everyone knew something about everyone else.

After lunch elections were held for next year’s board and a big CONGRATULATIONS goes out to our incoming board members: Daniel Bowen, Governor (Bishop Moore), Kayle Suero, Deputy Governor (Bishop Moore), Emma Ebel, Sec-retary (Bishop Moore), Rebecca Algero, PR Coordinator (Bishop Moore), Teodora Dillard, Sergeant-at-Arms (Ocoee), Matthew Silva, Lt. Florida District Civitan Governor-elect Bob Brightman installed our new officers. We are still in need of two Lt. Governors ... for the Tallahassee area and Miami/Naples area.

Junior Civitan Activities

Naples High School Junior Civitan Club … Naples Civitans volunteered at Heil Luthringer Taste of Collier fundraiser. They have been helping this program for many years now. Special thanks to the dedicated Junior Civitans who also gave a helping hand. St. Petersburg Junior Civitan Club … Robert Schroeder, Presi-dent of St. Petersburg Club presented Anthony Nyugen with a scholarship in June

Sandalwood High School Junior Civitan Club … Pat Ellis, immediate past president of Uptown Civitan, presented the Past President Scholarship to Jamie France.

Golden Gate and Naples High School Junior Civitan Clubs … The Naples Club presented $1000 scholarships to a Junior Civitan Anjali Desai from Golden Gate HS and to Tiffany Gavin of Naples HS. These were presented by Past In-ternational Presidents and club members, Bill Pearson and Syd Fishman.

Mattie (continued) … The next order of business was the Membership Extravaganza … also a fun and exciting time. Louis Stephens always provides outstanding entertainment and this time was no exception. An Estonian boys’ choir and singer/dancers were very enjoyable. Civitans were encouraged to recruit members before the end of September … and to build new clubs. New clubs are the lifeblood of Civitan, and of course, we know that retaining and recruiting new members are also how each of our clubs continue to thrive and serve those in need in our individual communities. Keep up the good work, Civitans. Recruit someone new. Ask a former member to rejoin. We can make it happen! We can do it!!

Incoming President Joe Parker introduced his governors and announced the theme for this coming year -- Passion … Speaks with Action! Each governor spoke of his/her passion for Civitan.

Friday night was the installation of governors and International officers, always a moving and motivating time. Past President Bettye Sue Bolen was the installing officer and urged the International officers and governors to provide the passion and lead-ership to help Civitan continue to grow.

As you can tell, the Civitan International World Congress in Tallinn, Estonia was an exciting and fun-filled convention for the almost 400 people in attendance!! Now, I look forward to next year’s convention in Denver, Colorado … July 3 – 6, 2013 and a cruise to Bermuda in 2014 … date to be determined. See you in Denver!!

Civitan Civitan Civitan Civitan ————---- Enriching Lives Through ServiceEnriching Lives Through ServiceEnriching Lives Through ServiceEnriching Lives Through Service

Civitans from around the world gathered for the 92nd Civitan International World Congress in Tallinn, Estonia, July 3 – 6, for a wonderful week. Time was spent visiting the beautiful historical sites of Tallinn, the town square, and museums, and talking with long-time friends and meeting new ones … and spending time on the business of the convention too! This was also the time for recognizing and presenting awards to many individual Civitans, clubs, and districts for their hard work … all as they were Enriching Lives Through Service. In addition, Civitans participated in the BreakThru Golf Tournament and Putt-N-Chip in support of the Civitan International Research Center, and also brought clothing for the International Service Project, which was to provide clothing for an agency in Tallinn to help those in need. Civitans were very generous and brought many items.

Tuesday … The opening ceremony is always special!! It was held Tuesday night, July 3, at the Nokia Concert Hall and rec-ognized the Outstanding New Club, the Dr. Courtney W. Shropshire Outstanding Civitan Club, Distinguished 2010-2011 Gov-ernors, and 2012 International Honor Key recipients. I was very pleased that my home club, the Uptown Civitan Club, was awarded the Shropshire award, and I was surprised and thrilled to be one of four who received the International Honor Key. What a great way to start a convention!!

Wednesday brought the first business session and introduction of candidates for International offices. Two candidates an-nounced for President-Elect … Debbie Bruce-Juhike, Texas, and Bob Robinson, Canada; as well as candidates for Regions One, Two, Four, Eight and the European Division. Faye E. Evans, Georgia District, was the only candidate for Region Two and was duly elected. Congratulations to Faye!! Another new country has been added … Haiti … when PIP Mark Eisinger chartered a new club in that country. The highlight of every International Convention, to me, is the presentation of Dr. Harald Sontheimer. As always he reinforces the reason why the Civitan International Research Center is world-renowned for its many breakthroughs in helping those with disabilities and much more. Encourage your club president to obtain the 2012 video and learn even more. It is always outstanding!!

Thursday provided many opportunities to attend workshops and seminars … New Club in a Box, fundraising, finding new members, securing your clubs success, transformational leadership, and public relations. It was also a time to recognize those clubs and districts who earned International awards during 2010-2011 under Civitan International President Gay Aaron. Gay presented the awards to Lake Eola (second place for Outstanding Club Website) and Uptown (lst place in Outstanding Service to People with Disabilities and 2nd place in Outstanding Club Newsletter) in the Florida District. Way to go!!! The President’s Council Social was outstanding!! Members of the council were treated to a visit to the Estonian Seaplane Harbour Museum. A submarine and many other naval boats and equipment were on display. Estonian food was served … and it was delicious!! I wasn’t always sure what it was, but it was tasty!

Friday brought election results and it was announced that Bob Robinson will be the 2012-2013 President-Elect. Congratula-tions to Bob! Fellows were also awarded by President Bill Buscher. Again, I was surprised and thrilled to receive a Junior Fellow. Continued … Mattie page 13
