It is an amazing thing, this Christianity.

Some 2,000 years ago Rome controlledmost of Europe, North Africa and theMiddle East. Roman power controlledsome 60 million people – including thosewho lived in Palestine, located toward theouter reaches of the Roman world.

A proud people lived there. God Himselfgave them their land. Their history andlegacy—which include transmitting to theworld the 10 Commandments—shaped thefuture of the world.

These people desired freedom, and toreturn to the economic and military powerthey enjoyed under the great kings Davidand Solomon.

During the reign of the Emperor CaesarAugustus, Jesus was born, and grew toimpact the country. Many times Hedemonstrated power over the enemies ofhumanity: sickness, hunger and hatred –even death.

The crowds followed Him in growingnumbers. Perhaps he was the leader theywere looking for to wrest their land backfrom the Romans. But that was not to be.

We know the story. He offended theauthorities. His message did not blendwith theirs. He died on a rugged cross andwas buried in a borrowed tomb.

Then He arose. Even the greatest Jewishhistorian of that era, Josephus, describesHim as risen from the dead:

“...[Jesus] was [the] Christ; and whenPilate...had condemned him to the cross, thosethat loved him at the first did not forsake him,for he appeared to them alive again the third

day, as the divine prophets had foretold...”(Antiquities of the Jews xviii 3.3.)

We see the words he taught in theirpowerful light. His Kingdom is set up inthe hearts of mankind. His will be doneon earth as it is in heaven:

Love the Lord your God with all yourheart, soul, mind and strength and yourneighbor as yourself; The world will knowyou are My disciples by the way you loveone another; If you love Me, keep Mycommandments; When you have done itto the least of these you have done it unto Me.

After He rose he told His followers to goto a place and await an important event. The Holy Spirit would come upon themto bring power and purity. With this newpartner and preparation they were to gointo the whole world and make disciples, not just followers.

It happened as He said it would. They leftthat place and went back into the samestreets, encountered the same crowds, andboldly proclaimed the true Gospel of Jesus.Thousands became disciples daily. Thegreat transformation of the world began.

Something else began to happen. Thosewho had this new status of disciple ofChrist found a change had taken place intheir hearts. They had acquired a passionateconcern for their fellow disciples.

They put in place a plan whereby theycould provide for anyone in need. Theypooled their resources to meet everyone’sneeds.

Acts chapters 2 and 4 will tell you thestory, though it is slipped into the

narrative in almost a passive way.

However, these words describe how heartsare changed to feel concern and compassionfor their fellow Christians to a degree thatthe unconverted person cannot understand.

Jesus said that people will know we are Hisdisciples by the way we love one another.

Some 2,000 years later, this truth remains.Christian Healthcare Ministries is anexample. In the last 15 years we haveshared more than $450 million in medicalneeds for fellow Christians. That is net, after bill reductions and write-offs. This isan amazing demonstration of what Jesussaid would happen.

Every month our members join together tolift the heavy burden of their fellow

born, so my insurance covered the first 90days of the vaccine. Once I left to stay athome permanently, the insurance coverageended and we had to pay $1,400 permonth for the vaccine. Our familymembers graciously loaned us the money, but we had to find a way to repay them fortheir kindness.

We had joined Christian HealthcareMinistries in September 2005. We knewthat Kelsey’s condition was pre-existing,

but a CHM staff member told us that herremaining bills would be eligible forlisting on the Prayer Page.

We thank God for protecting our baby andproviding for all of her needs. She is now ahealthy two-year-old, although she is sosmall that she wears clothing for 12-month-olds.

We also are thankful for the prayers andfinancial support from CHM members.

God bless you and the CHM staff!

The trends shaping our future

According to a report by the Worldwatch Institute, economicindicators are on the rise as environmental problems worsen. Thechart below lists major trends to watch.

Source: Worldwatch InstituteCourtesy Saurage Research “Key Findings” newsletter

Food and agriculture: Meat production is at an all-time high, despite the recent popularity of vegetarian diets. Pork has thehighest production (38.7 percent of all meat), followed bypoultry (30.6 percent), beef (22.7 percent), and sheep/goat/other(8.0 percent).

Energy and climate: Production of photo-voltaic cells, whichgenerate electricity directly from sunlight, is increasingexponentially. Production in 2005 (1,727 megawatts) is up 600percent from year 2000 levels. China accounts for 59 percent ofworldwide solar heating, with the United States only at 1.8percent.

Economy: The U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rose 79percent between 1972 and 2005. A new measure, the GenuineProgress Indicator (GPI) recalibrates the GDP by considering thesocietal worth of economic activity. For example, it subtracts outpollution and adds in unmeasured benefits. The GPI rose onlyone percent from 1972 to 2005.

Trends shaping ourenvironment and world

Transportation and communication: Air travel is increasingagain, but only five percent of the world’s population has everflown. Americans fly the most miles, twice that of Europeans, who fly 10 times the miles that Asians do.

Health and social trends: HIV/AIDS continues to threatendevelopment in Africa. Some 70 percent of the world’s HIVpositive workforce lives in Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia,Mozambique, and Zimbabwe.

Conflict and peace trends: In 2004, the United Statesaccounted for 46.7 percent of all military spending, almost asmuch as the rest of the world combined. Japan came in secondwith 4.4 percent of military spending and China spent 3.6percent of the total.

Environmental features: New technology has lead togroundwater depletion throughout the globe. In Mexico, morethan one-fourth (28 percent) of aquifers have been pumpedalmost dry. Groundwater depletion causes land sinkage; in theUnited States, 80 percent of sinkage is caused by over-drawinggroundwater.

Economy and social features: Car-sharing (where individualspay membership or subscription rates in order to have access to aprivate vehicle) is growing in popularity. In North America,105,571 people currently participate in a car-sharing program.

I am 62 years old and have been self-employed for 40 years. My wife, Kathy, andI had medical insurance for many years, butthe organization through which we hadgroup coverage recently dissolved.

Kathy and I both have pre-existing medicalconditions that made it very difficult tofind other medical coverage. We joinedChristian Healthcare Ministries in 2003.Since then, God has blessed us with verygood health, except for my ongoing battlewith prostate cancer and complicationsfrom the treatment.

Since our business is very small, themedical bills have been a great burden. However, the donations from many caringChristians have been a greatencouragement. The prayers, cards, andencouraging messages have been thegreatest blessing of all. I feel that I havemade some friends I have never met.

I thank God for these generous people andfor Christian Healthcare Ministries. I mustconfess that prior to receiving from others, Inever felt it necessary to give toward PrayerPage needs. I was wrong. I am now faithfulto give back to others in need. I praise Godthat He has taken care of me and that I amdoing well.

Diana MannersSalem, OHAmount of original need: $11,907 forgallbladder surgeryPrayer Page gifts received to date: $1,057Need remaining: $10,850

In June 1986, my husband, Edwin, and Imoved to Copley, Ohio. He had accepted apastoral position that did not offer medicalinsurance. The new position required thatwe obtain medical coverage, but we couldnot afford to purchase an insurance policyfor our three sons and us.

Since we lived close to the ChristianHealthcare Ministries office, we soon heardabout CHM and decided to join. We werecontent with the program and remainedmembers for 10 years.

In 1996, Edwin once again felt God’s callto be a pastor at a church that could notafford to pay him much. He took a secondjob at a factory, which provided us withmedical insurance. We dropped out of theCHM program, well aware that God mightsomeday call us to move again and oncemore join a Christian support organization.

We moved once again in 2004 to Salem,Ohio, where Edwin was hired as assistant

business manager at a local Bible college.

We joined a different Christian cost-sharingorganization and remained members for ayear, but eventually dropped out becausewe were not satisfied with the program. We rejoined Christian HealthcareMinistries in 2005.

Previously, I had experienced minorepisodes of abdominal pain, but did nothave any major problems when we becameCHM members the second time. In May2006 I suffered severe abdominal pain andwent to the emergency room. Testing forgallbladder problems came back negative, but from that time I watched my dietcarefully, making sure to eat healthy andnatural foods.

I suffered another severe attack inSeptember 2006. A visit with the surgeonand review of my HIDA (hydroxyiminodiacetic acid) scan revealed that mygallbladder was only functioning at 23percent.

We decided that I should undergooutpatient surgery even though we did nothave traditional medical insurance. Afterthe surgery, the doctor promised to reducethe bill from $2,900 to $1,000 if weprepaid. We found a way to prepay the billand then submitted the charges toChristian Healthcare Ministries forreimbursement.

We discovered that the condition was pre-existing because the symptoms beganbefore we rejoined CHM. However, theCHM staff gave us the option of beinglisted on the Prayer Page. Since then, wehave received many cards and checks in themail, which have been a source ofencouragement to us.

Everything we have received has beenuplifting. Thank you for your words ofencouragement, gifts and prayers. I haverecovered completely from the surgery andhave had no more attacks.

We thank God not only for my physicalhealing, but for Christian HealthcareMinistries and the dedicated service it isdelivering to Christians across the nation.

Share the Message. Bring a Friend.

Do one, the other, or both, and threethings happen for you:

1. You’re strengthening this ministry foryourself and for others.

2. You’re living the Gospel’s message ofChristian compassion.

3. You’re saving money, and depending onhow much you participate, it could be alot of money.

Those are the three reasons why ministrymembers should use the Share the Messageand Bring-a-Friend programs to bring newmembers into Christian HealthcareMinistries.

Let’s look at each one, in reverse order.

3. You’re saving money, anddepending on how much youparticipate, it could be a lot ofmoney.

Share the Message

Members can earn a free month ofministry participation for each family thatjoins through their Share the Messageoutreach. For a family at Gold level, thatmeans a savings of $405 permonth per family.

Continuing to use Goldlevel as an example, if justfive families from an entirechurch join CHM through amember’s Share the Messageoutreach, that memberwould save $2,025 inmonthly financial gifts.

A complete Share theMessage program has beenprepared for members to usein their churches. There is aSample Kit (to let you seehow Share the Messageworks) and an Event Kitwith everything you need topresent the CHM programto your congregation.

Nearly 70 Event Kits havebeen sent to members. Whydon’t you be the next one?

Bring-a-Friend

Bring-a-Friend is our time-

tested and highly successful method ofgrowing the ministry. It works verysimply. CHM members bring new peopleinto the ministry and receive a free monthof participation for doing so.

Each month thousands of dollars in freeparticipation is earned by ministrymembers whose friends have joined CHM.This opportunity is here for you as well.

2. You’re living the Gospel’smessage of Christiancompassion.

Galatians 6:2 is the CHM’s cornerstoneverse: “Carry each other’s burdens and sofulfill the law of Christ.”

Our actions demonstrate our faith. Caringfor each other as we do through CHMcauses those outside the Body of Christ tostop and consider what it is that we sharethat they do not possess.

The answer is Jesus and His love.

We are a 21st century equivalent of thefirst-century Christians who banded totogether to see that the needs of all weremet.

What we do for each other helps people tosee Jesus. There is no greater cause.

1. You’re strengthening thisministry for yourself and forothers.

If one person lifts a 100 pound weight, it’shard work. If five people lift the sameweight, the burden is shared.

The analogy to the ministry is exact. Themore brothers and sisters we have on ourmembership rolls, the lighter the burdenfor everyone.

That’s why we put emphasis on growingthe ministry. It’s not for profit. We don’tmake profits, we don’t invest in the stockmarket and we don’t have a fancydowntown office tower.

We share in paying medical bills. That’sall we do. That’s all we want to do.

You have demonstrated faithfulness andcompassion by being part of this ministry. Will you take the next step and Bring aFriend, or Share the Message?

To learn more about Share the Message andBring-a-Friend, please contact Norma Mull inMinistry Information [email protected] or 1-800-791-6225, ext. 5233.

Reductions (continued from page 1)

“The low cost attracts more new membersto CHM. Also, obtaining reductionsmakes more funds available to assist withother members’ needs.”

“Although it is sometimes difficult, myadvice to members with needs is to makethe minimum monthly payment on yourbills and show an interest in making surethe bills are paid. Providers will be morewilling to work with you. Don’t hesitateto seek help from government agenciesand hospital assistance programs. Onceyou obtain a hospital bill reduction, otherproviders will usually reduce their bills as well.”

Gerald expressed his gratitude towardeveryone who helped him in his time ofneed. “I have been blessed with asupportive family, good friends, and awonderful church family,” he said. “I’malso thankful for CHM and that we joinedseveral years ago. They came along at atime in my life when I needed themmost.”

Darryl & Linda Taylor, Clinton, Tenn.• 100 percent reduction on hospital bills• 100 and 40 percent on radiology bills• 50 percent on pathology bills• 50 and 30 percent on obstetrics bills• 30 percent on pediatric cardiology bills• 30 percent on neonatal care bills• 30 percent on hospital testing bills• 30 percent on anesthesiology bills • 20 percent on children’s hospital bills• 18 percent on lab bills

• Total amount reduced: Approximately $65,000

Darryl and Linda’s son, Joel, was born inNovember 2006 with Down Syndromeand two ventricular septal heart defects(VSDs). Pregnancy complications alsocaused the baby to have hypertension. After a C-section delivery, Joel remainedin the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)for 12 days and underwent many follow-up evaluations.

The Taylors have been CHM members formore than 10 years and are familiar withthe reasons to obtain reductions onmedical bills. They also have six children, four of whom were born since the Taylorsjoined the ministry.

“We explained to each of our providersthat we are self-pay patients, but we alsoare members of a cost-sharing program inwhich Christians share each other’smedical bills,” Linda said. “Usually theproviders could offer a 30 percentreduction immediately, but largerreductions took longer to negotiate.”

She added that Christian HealthcareMinistries and The Karis Group werehelpful in giving advice and supportthroughout the financial part of theirmedical crisis.

“Asking for reductions helps remindpeople to make careful health carechoices,” Linda said. “I am a nurse and Ibelieve this approach to meeting health

care costs also reminds the health careindustry that service to patients isimportant.”

The Taylors believe that seekingreductions and financial assistance is a wisefinancial decision because it helps both themember receiving the assistance and allother members who have medical needs.

“If you are pregnant or are considering anyelective procedure that allows you time toplan, it’s a good idea to put money asidethat can be used to pay some of the billsimmediately,” Linda advised. “Manyproviders offered us reductions if we couldget the bills paid within a short amount oftime.”

She also encourages members to share theirstories with health care providers. “Givingthem the details often makes a difference. You may need to speak with a supervisoror a few different people before they offerhelp.”

The Taylors’ final piece of advice to CHMmembers is to ask about assistance

programs. “We thought thatwe wouldn’t qualify forneed-based assistance, butwe took the time to answersome questions and fill outsome paperwork,” Lindasaid. “As a result, thehospital wrote off more than$60,000.”

“We praise God for what Hehas done through this crisis.God can certainly work allthings together for good andour faith has grown in seeingGod meet our financialneeds. We’ve told othersabout God’s faithfulness inthis situation and how we’vebeen blessed by the love, support, and generosity ofothers from the hospital,Christian HealthcareMinistries, The Karis Group, other Christians and ourchurch family.”

disciples, not just with their regularmonthly giving but with extra givingaveraging around $13,000.

When your new CHM leadership team

took position six years ago we took on abacklog of over $27 million left by theministry’s previous managers. Today thatbacklog is down to $700,000. We aremeeting today’s needs even as we fulfillcommitments from the past, all because ofthe faithful giving of fellow Christianswho are part of this ministry.

We praise God and thank you for beingfaithful.

We are moving forward together while

expecting great things on behalf of thekingdom of God. More and moreChristians are becoming members ofChristian Healthcare Ministries. Moreand more Christians are finding theblessing of this wonderful family.

Letters to Christian Healthcare Ministries

We’d love to hearfrom you!Send us your letters:Christian HealthcareMinistriesAttn: Editor127 Hazelwood Ave.Barberton, OH 44203

[email protected]

Just as the church of Christ is not a building, Christian HealthcareMinistries is not an office in Ohio.

These letters represent what you who participate in CHM areaccomplishing for each other and for the cause of Christ.

You, through your collective and faith-based sharing and support, makethis ministry possible. We are privileged to serve you. We are privileged toserve Him.

– Rev. Howard Russell

Dear CHM members and staff:

We have been CHM members since April1987. We wish to extend our thanks to youand to God for the blessing you are andhave been for 20 years.

Prior to 1987, it was one mix up afteranother with our health insurance companywhenever we submitted a claim. It requiredhours and even days of work in order toprove that, according to our policy, it wasthe company’s responsibility to pay ourmedical providers.

When we joined CHM, it was like a weighthad been lifted from our shoulders.Although CHM has faced difficultcircumstances at times, we are so gratefulfor the services that members and staff haveprovided.

We believe that God ordained and set thisministry in motion. Thank you forcontinuing on in the good work you aredoing.

We encourage members to be sure to ask forreductions, understanding that they are self-pay patients participating in a faith-basedministry and that they deserve the sameprice consideration that is given toinsurance companies. Most doctors andhospitals we have encountered have given usfair consideration and have done so with agood attitude.

In autumn 2006, we had bills for cataractsurgery and were amazed at how much thedoctor reduced the amount (about 33

percent) with no questions asked and nopaperwork to fill out. We simply explainedwhat CHM is and how it works. After weanswered their questions and filled out a fewforms, the hospital reduced the bill to zero!

Asking for reductions allows more dollars tohelp others and keep costs down formembers. We praise God for His help andthank all of you. We especially thankDonna, our CHM Needs Processingrepresentative, who was so sweet andencouraging whenever we had a question orconcern.

God bless you all,

Dan & Pat AllenDeford, MI

Dear Christian Healthcare Ministries:

We are sending a check for $1,199.40 to theministry, since the hospital gave us a billreduction after we received the originalcheck from you.

Thank you for all of your help and forgiving us confidence in this ministry. Wethank God that CHM operates in such atrustworthy manner.

God bless,

Irene PattonSan Antonio, TX

Dear Christian Healthcare Ministries:

We are interested in presenting the ministryto our church family. May the Lord continueto bless Christian Healthcare Ministries.

Sincerely,

Trudy ElsberryPage, NE

Dear Rev. Russell and CHM Board ofTrustees:

We will always be grateful for your faithfulconcern and care. Our faith in this ministrywas cemented years ago when membersgraciously shared Wilma Jean’s bills forheart surgery.

Although we are now on Medicare, we planto keep giving toward the needs of God’speople as long as we live. We hope thatbefore long we will be able to increase theamount of our gift.

The CHM program is the scriptural plan forhealth care. May your journey be joyful andyour labors be rewarded.

Sincerely,
