July 12, 2013 Stephen W. Wyatt, DMD, MPH Dean and Professor, College of Public Health

Ellen Hahn, PhD, RN, FAAN Professor, College of Nursing

Co-Chairs Search Committee Dean of CON University of Kentucky Dear Dr. Wyatt, Dr. Hahn and Search Committee: It is with great enthusiasm that I notify you of my interest in the Deanship position for the College of Nursing (CON) at the University of Kentucky (UK). This position is especially attractive to me because of your status as a Carnegie designated university with a Clinical and Translational Science Award program. I believe my extensive academic experience with promoting nursing excellence through teaching, practice, research and values-based leadership would deepen the impact that UK CON has on the health and wellness of Kentuckians and beyond. Driven for excellence in nursing practice is at the core of my 37-year tenure as a nurse, I have spent most of my career as

part of a team of outstanding clinicians, leaders and mentors building upon my experience at several leading academic

medical centers throughout the country. With practice experiences predominantly with acute and critically ill adult

patients and families in ER /trauma, CCU and surgical environments, I have served in numerous positions from charge

nurse to administration to advanced practice nursing and academic nursing leadership. Consistent throughout my

career has been the commitment to integrate teaching, practice and research focused on making a positive impact in

the lives of patients, families, communities and systems.

My passion for academic teaching began at the University of South Carolina (USC), as an undergraduate medical-surgical

clinical instructor and later teaching graduate courses for nurse practitioner students. It was during my USC tenure that

we were widely recognized for our efforts as pioneers in Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) education. Through ~$1

million HRSA funding, I was responsible for implementing the first ACNP program in the southeast and became part of a

team earning national recognition as leaders with distance learning technology. This experience prepared me for a

wider impact of shaping nursing education and launching scholarship at Georgetown University (GU) in Washington DC

with graduate education outcomes of 100% first time ACNP board certification rates, a $100,000 campaign for ACNP

scholarships and successful CCNE accreditation. Serving as the Associate Dean of Academic Nursing Practice and later as

the Associate Dean of Academic Practice at Georgia Health Sciences University ([GHSU] formerly the Medical College of

Georgia; now Georgia Regents University) , I provided leadership with the quality of education for over 600

undergraduate and graduate nursing students and development of over 100 faculty members on 4 campuses. We

implemented the first CNL and DNP programs in the state and among the first 10 in the country resulting in top rankings

for graduate nursing education and full Georgia Board of Nursing approval as well as CCNE accreditation. Through over

$3 million in external support, we were able to grow the CNL program from 24 students on one campus to 118 on 4

campuses and implement the first BSN to DNP with ACNP program of study in the state of Georgia.

Integrating practice with academic responsibilities began as a joint appointment at Georgetown where I served as the

first ACNP for the Department of Surgery and coordinated the first ACNP program in the Washington DC – Baltimore MD

area. My clinical responsibilities included working with an interdisciplinary team delivering pre-operative, post-

operative and post-discharge plans of care. I also implemented the first NP managed tobacco cessation program for the

Medical Center. This experience better prepared me for providing leadership for GHSU’s tobacco-free campus initiative,

increasing revenue for faculty practice positions in the tobacco cessation clinic (~$375,000) for comprehensive

treatment (counseling, pharmacotherapy and follow-up) and increasing faculty scholarship with widespread

dissemination of our positive patient outcomes. In addition, we opened the first Walmart NP Clinic in the state of

Georgia as well as obtained funding from the Georgia Healthcare Foundation to establish the first “medical-home”

network in Augusta, Georgia. My journey with integrating faculty practice at the University of Virginia (UVA) continues

with a team of nursing students and faculty providing care at the Quit Smoking Charlottesville program and the first NP

managed Hoo’s Kicking It program for UVA employees this fall.

My research trajectory, in both lifestyle behavioral interventional (i.e., tobacco cessation) and workforce development

(i.e., train-the-trainer tobacco cessation education) research, also first began at Georgetown. With ~$250,000 from

private foundations and associations, my leadership shaped such experiences and initiatives as the American Legacy

Foundation’s Project Backyard for Telephone Interventions to Quit, Georgetown’s Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use

Research Center for clinical trials, and the Summer Institute (SI) for Tobacco Control in Nursing Education. Key

partnerships from the SI lead to my leadership for founding a national coalition for nursing educators dedicated to

tobacco control (www.nurses4tobaccocontrol.org) for free access of quality resources to support research, education,

advocacy and research. I have since expanded my program of research to include serving as PI/Co-I on NIH funded

grants (~$ 2 million) to promote tobacco cessation and education in rural counties in Georgia, improving maternal-

health outcomes through tobacco cessation and evaluating best practices with tobacco cessation in acute and critical

care settings. Over the past 15 years, I have been awarded over $12 million for academic and/or research initiatives,

generated over 150 publications and abstracts, served on numerous regional and national task forces for tobacco

control including the American Academy of Nursing’s Health Behavior Expert Panel and American Heart Association’s

Smokeless Tobacco Expert Panel.

Currently serving as the chief academic officer for the University of Virginia School of Nursing, I am responsible for the

quality and integrity of education for the state’s flagship nursing school. I provide leadership with our BSN, MSN, DNP

and PhD degree programs of study with over 16 focus areas and/or certificate options to optimize learning outcomes

and services for 720 students. Since my arrival, efforts to create a healthy work environment with meaningful

recognition includes my influence with professional development opportunities for over 100 faculty members,

transformation of BSN education, teaching efficiencies, infra-structure support for academic operations, mentorship of

new program leaders and preparation of a fall 2013 CCNE accreditation. Through strategic philanthropic mentoring

opportunities by Dean Dorrie Fontaine, I serve as the PI for the recently awarded $5 million gift from the Conway

Foundation to expand our CNL program from 24 students in Charlottesville to 96 students throughout rural Virginia. I

also influenced a new generation of innovative models of education and practice by securing ~$150,000/yr continuous

funding from the Office of the Provost to advance undergraduate nursing research and advance interprofessional

education with UVA School of Medicine for Avatar virtual learning programs.

Recognizing that the success of any team/organization depends upon the efforts of dedicated individuals to “learn well

to lead well”, my leadership training was launched while serving as a Board of Director member for the American

Association of Critical-Care Nurses representing more than 90,000 members and affiliates throughout the world. This

opportunity provided exceptional personal and professional growth, especially with board governance, strategic

planning, media management, business finance and interprofessional collaborations. More recently I completed the

Harvard University Management and Leadership in Higher Education program as well as the UVA Leadership in

Academic Matters program. My leadership principles and values are grounded in creating a positive culture of

Page 3: July 12, 2013 , Janie … · health outcomes through tobacco cessation and evaluating best practices with tobacco cessation in acute and critical care settings. ... practice and research

3

professionalism, healthy and respectful work environments, accountability, commitment to excellence, achievement for

all, and mentoring. My beliefs of building trust, creating shared goals for all individuals to flourish and nurturing

collaborative relationships to form strategic partnerships are essential for successful execution in navigating the

political, cultural, and social climate of today’s landscape in higher education.

In summary, my past experiences and qualifications position me as an ideal candidate for the position of Dean at the

University of Kentucky. If your committee is interested in pursuing my potential candidacy, I would welcome the

opportunity to share my vision of how UK nursing can achieve “its vision” and “thrive” as one of the nation’s top nursing

programs among public research intensive universities. It is through new innovative models of healthcare delivery and

expanded collaborative partnerships that support nursing education, practice and research that UK CON can continue its

excellence and influence the health and wellness for all Kentuckians and beyond.

Sincerely,

Janie Heath PhD, APRN-BC, FAAN Associate Dean of Academic Programs and Thomas Saunders III Endowed Professor of Nursing and NP Coordinator for UVA Employee Health: Hoo’s Kicking It Now Program
