“One day at a Time”

Editor - James Terrell

“The year of cancellations”

I started out this year with a lot of plans. My plate was very full.

My pans included a trip to Scotland to see my wife’s family in

May. Then on to Nicaragua for a mission’s trip in June. My plans

also included some domestic travel as well. The State UPMA

conference at Callaway Gardens and the national conference in

St Louise Missouri. Then my final big finale of the year was the

Stone Mountain Highland games where I am part of the grounds

crew and the Southern officers conference. A year full of travel.

Well needles to say, things did not go as planned. First

weas my trip to Scotland in May. The airline canceled my flight

due to COVID 19. The next cancellation was the mission’s trip to

Nicaragua. We fell back and set a new date to go to Columbia in

July. Then the State Conference for May was Postponed. Short-

ly after that the Trip to Columbia was also canceled. Then the

National conference was canceled. It has now been rescheduled

for October. I was discussing the canceled national conference

with my State President Becky Manley when she came up with

the name for this article. “The year of Cancellations.”

The national conference is Rescheduled. The southern

officers conference I still on track. The Stone Mountain Highland

Games have been cancelled for this year. hopefully, we are

coming to the end of all the cancellations.

When I look back on all the things I had planned, even

after I did not get to follow through on all of them, I cannot help

but think how blessed we are. The opportunity to travel and do

all these different things. Just a couple of generations ago it

would have taken weeks just to make a 50-mile trek from one

city to another. Now we travel it in a matter of about an hour. I

can fly halfway around the world over night. It is not until these

things are taken away that you realize how great a gift they real-

ly are.

COVID-19 will eventually pass, leaving in its wake loss

and memories. However, most of us will go back to normal.

When you do get to go back to normal do not forget the things

that are important in this life. Hug your kids a little longer, stop

by your parents’ house unexpectedly if you are still blessed to

have them around. Spend time with the Grand Kids. By a small

gift for your spouse when it is not a special occasion. In the

midst of all of your travel plans Stop, take a deep breathe and

smell the roses.

Follow up to my last article. I was finally able to return home after 3 months. I am required to leave my shoes at the door and go straight to the shower. I still can’t hug my daughter but I am

home with her.

First, I want to say how much I appreciate the Postmas-

ters , Managers and Supervisors that report to work and

continue keeping the employees safe and the mail de-

livered . Thank you for your service and commitment to

your oath of office . You are indeed essential. As we

continue to deliver daily the importance of the post of-

fice is more apparent than ever as our nation has been

forced to stay at home. Although Georgia began open-

ing before much of the rest of the country we still can’t

let down our guard. As summer begins there are high

hopes that the warmer weather will have an impact on

the spread of Covid19 and research will result with a

vaccine. All we can do is take one day at a time. Easy

advice, harder to do for planners.

We look forward to the State Convention. I want to

thank Scarlet for her hard work and the one day at a

time attitude she’s had through all the changes. I know

how challenging planning our convention has been I

can’t imagine what the National Office faced. It reminds

me that we are not only essential to the post office but

also to UPMA. Without our members we can’t function.

We need you in attendance at Callaway Gardens to

conduct the business of our great State, National elec-

tions, and Bylaw changes . Come and let

your voice and vote be heard.

In just a few days we will begin the fourth quarter and

the end of another fiscal year. Hard to believe but can

only be managed one day at a time .

Be safe and look forward to seeing you at Callaway

Gardens!

“Faith over Fear”

I hope you and your family are doing well and staying safe in this very trying time. When I heard of an “outsider” being selected as the new Post-

master General, my thoughts went back to 1992 when Mr. Run-

yon become PMG and all the changes that were made within his

first 6 months. He did away with a layer of management that

hasn’t been missed, so I guess that layer of management was

no longer needed. The Postal Service’s biggest cost is salaries

and benefits. I doubt the new PMG (Louis DeJoy) will reach out

to me for my advice or suggestions. If he did, I think besides the

Union contracts, the next item to look at would be the District,

Area, & Headquarters staffing in that order. On visits to Capitol

Hill the question is asked “Why does the Postal Service need 67

Districts when there are only 50 States?”. I would suggest 40-45

Districts and only 4 Areas. When we were reducing staff in Post

Offices and Plants, District/Area/Headquarters were increasing

staff. We have Managers in Districts making more than

$100,000 and only have 5 or less employees. There are Area

and Headquarters Managers making more than $100,000 with-

out any employees. Is there a need for Area/Headquarters Man-

agers who don’t physically work at the Area or Headquarters’

locations? When you see an Area/Headquarters Manager, dom-

iciled at a District, come to work in shorts or sweatpants it

makes you wonder.

When did it become acceptable to allow employees to disrupt

the workroom floor by shouting and using foul language? If a

manager allows any employee to act in that manner without any

consequences, more employees will do the same. I’ve had two

new supervisors contact me asking how can they return to craft.

They are both in very challenging offices which at one time were

among the best in the District. What changed in those offices?

Did all the good employees retire? Sadly, what changed were

the managers and expectations. Performance which was previ-

ously unacceptable became allowed. Employees will give you

what you expect. No matter the size of your office or operation,

YOU own it. YOU set the example! YOU are accountable for

YOUR actions! YOU must be consistent. What is allowed in

other offices or operations, should not have any influence on

YOUR expectations.

Thank you for all you do each and every day! Please be safe!.

Always remember these two questions when you get that call

from your boss.

Do I need representation?

If the answer is no, then ask: May I bring representation?

As I sat at my granddaughter’s high school graduation

ceremony, I was truly impressed by the many words of encour-

agement these seniors had to say. They were born in 2001,

months prior to and after 9/11. Now, as they are graduating dur-

ing the world-wide pandemic of 2020, they have not let the cur-

rent situation over shadow their success. They spoke of the

positive aspects of the quarantine, shelter at home, and social

distancing, including spending more time with family, completing

household projects, and even enjoying virtual learning.

This helped me to reflect on how I have adjusted to the current

situation. For Freddy and me, this meant eating more meals at

home, enjoying the outdoors, and having church services by live

stream. We have completed many household projects, our gar-

den has never looked better, and our bees have never been

happier!

Think positive and focus on the good things and good times in

your life, and remember, “Faith over Fear”.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the State Convention at

Callaway Gardens!

Theresa

SOUTHERN OFFICER’S CONFERENCE IS ALIVE AND PROGRESSING!!! With many State Conventions being cut to one day and

the National Convention being re-scheduled/canceled, by fall you will be ready to for a “UPMA Break”. Georgia is proudly hosting the

2020 SOC in Atlanta on October 8-11. This event is one you surely do not want to miss. We have a weekend full of entertainment

each night, speakers, training, good food and a lot of southern hospitality. Did I mention sweet tea and peaches? We have a nation-

ally known humorous speaker to start us off on Thursday night, trust me you will be laughing until it hurts.

Calling all Retirees!!! Retirees take this time to reunite with your friends in which you have missed seeing during this unsettling time.

President Rodney has plans for you to have a great weekend also. Remember retirees, you are the back bone of this organization

and very much appreciated.

Here’s an idea, “Let’s have a mini National Convention”!!!! Make your plans to attend, flights are at an all-time low, room rate $115.00, registration $150.00 until September 1. Go on Georgia’s webpage and get all the information needed to be a part of this event. www.gaupma.com. “Is Georgia on Your Mind?” We certainly hope you will not miss this peachy event.
