at St. Mark’s on Saturday, May 27. Reflection on Page 3.

In this year of Jubilee, Fr. Hogan reminds us:

“I hope that your fuller realization of the ways that the Scriptures, Church teaching, and the teaching of our popes have supported the Charismatic Renewal, enables you to have a greater openness to the importance of the charismatic dimension for all of the Church, and the Church’s support of the Charismatic Renewal’s role in being a reminder in the Church of the importance of the full role of the Holy Spirit, baptism in the Spirit, and being empowered by charisms for service and evangelization.”

NEW BEGINNINGS FOR CCCR

Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I say rejoice! The Lord’s hand is upon us!

Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller has been in conversation with Fr. Bob Hogan, BBD, and the Brothers

of the Beloved Disciple, about ways that the Archdiocese can support the ministry of the Catholic Cen-

ter for Charismatic Renewal (CCCR). In support of this conversation he has asked the Brothers of the

Beloved Disciple to take an ongoing leadership role in supporting the Center. As of July 1, 2017 the

Brothers of the Beloved Disciple are being given the responsibility of overseeing the ministries of St.

Philip of Jesus Parish, St. Henry Parish, and the Catholic Center for Charismatic Renewal. Fr. Bob Ho-

gan, BBD, will become the pastor of St. Philip of Jesus, the administrator of St. Henry Parish, and will

continue as the director of CCCR. When Bro. Sean Stilson, BBD, is ordained as a priest in 2018, he will

join Fr. Bob. Brother Ruben Garza, BBD, hopefully, will also join this effort after he finishes his degree

in May 2018. It will mean an extra-busy first year for me (Fr. Bob), but in the long run this will be a great

blessing for CCCR.

I hope that you are excited about our new possibilities. We will be talking in the Fall about a long-term

vision and plan for Charismatic Renewal in our Archdiocese. Let us all unite together; Spanish, English,

Youth and Young Adult groups for God’s purposes. The Brothers of the Beloved Disciple are excited

and showing their support of this effort by donating $25,000 to the Jubilee Year Campaign for CCCR,

as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

We need all of you and your prayer group’s support to reach our goal of making another $70,000 this

year for this campaign. As I have mentioned before, the CCCR building is over 100 years old. We need

to replace many windows, renovate the bathrooms, replace tiles and carpets, etc. With the support of

the Archdiocese, the closer ability to work with St. Henry’s Church, and the grace of the Holy Spirit, we

can accomplish some wonderful things. We need some people, who have the resources, to make major

donations ($5,000, $2,000, $1,000, or $500) to the Center, and we need many people to give as gener-

ously as they can under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to this year’s Jubilee Campaign. We have in-

cluded a donation envelope in this newsletter.

In order to have greater financial stability and to raise money for renovations, we had to discontinue our paid position of office manager. We are blessed to have volunteers who are covering the various re-sponsibilities. Dan Dúet is now working more closely with us at the Center. Maricela Solis coordinates our bookstore, translates documents for the Center, and helps in other ways. Cony and Mike Tokarz are overseeing finances and purchasing. We are always looking for people who can help with keeping the building clean. Any person(s) who can do some cleaning once a month would be a blessing.

We had two wonderful events on May 27. We had a Day of Formation for Spanish prayer

groups at St. Mary Magdalen. Newly ordained as a priest, Fr. Daniel Villareal, and Hiram

Limon led the teaching based on the new book we have in Spanish called Elementos de los

Grupos de Oracion. The book is available in our bookstore.

We also had a Night of Renewal in English at St. Mark the Evangelist Church. We celebrated

the 50th Jubilee of Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Fr. George Montague, SM reflected on the

Renewal and its beginnings in San Antonio. We also honored people who have been in-volved in the Renewal for 30 years or more. We give special thanks to Fr. Enda McKenna, Bishop Thomas Flanagan, Ros Hernandez, and Rudy and Delfie Garcia who have given wonderful leadership to the Center over the 38 years that the Center has been at the St. Henry Church property. We are grateful for the hundreds of people who have supported us.

A Time for Testimonies!

You’ll notice on pages 4 and 5 that we have two testimonies to share, one in Spanish and one in English. We hope that including testimonies in future newsletters will prove to be an inspiration to all of us. If you would like to share your testimony in a future edition of the newsletter, contact Dan Dúet at [email protected]. This is just one of several changes coming to the Charisletter!

ningún Sacerdote Católico me pudo ayudar.

Empezamos a

do totalmente.

Antonio. Debemos estar orgullosos y agradecidos por ello.

Time for Testimony!

In the summer of 1996 I moved from Belgium to San Marcos, Texas to serve as the Professor of Military Sci-

ence at Southwest Texas State University. I began attending St John the Evangelist Catholic Church and was

looking for a prayer group. I’d never so much as heard the word “charismatic” when I entered the room

where the prayer group meeting took place. These people were singing, clapping their hands, shouting

“Praise the Lord” and “Hallelujah,” and speaking in tongues. To say I felt uncomfortable and out of place

would be an understatement. I silently wondered what I’d gotten myself into. But something inside told me

to give it a chance. I realize now that that “something” was the Holy Spirit.

A few months went by and I was told I should attend a Life in the Spirit Seminar, though no one could tell me

where one was being presented. However, God knew where I could find one. Having just been promoted to

Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army, I needed a new identification card. So I went to Ft Sam Houston in San

Antonio to obtain one. I was not in a good mood that day so I decided to sit as far away from everyone else

as possible. I found a back row about 20 feet away from the others and thought I would enjoy the solitude. I

was reading a book about God as I waited for my name to be called. Before too long this woman came and

sat down right next to me. With all the vacant seats in this place I couldn’t understand why she had to sit

right next to me. Given my mood, I was not terribly happy about it. Then she interrupts me to ask what I’m

reading. I didn’t even have the courtesy to answer her. I merely turned my book towards her so she could

see the front cover and read it for herself. Then she started talking to me about God, which is my favorite

subject. Well, I perked right up and began engaging her in conversation. Without my ever having said one

word about a Life in the Spirit Seminar, she invited me to attend one at St John Neumann Catholic Church in

San Antonio the following week. God led this woman to me and I wish I knew who she was so I could thank

her. Because through her I received a most powerful spiritual gift.

The following Saturday I attended a one-day Life in the Spirit Seminar. Hands were laid on me in prayer for

the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Honestly, I didn’t feel anything and I thought it didn’t “take.” I had been en-

couraged to repeat their words of tongues in order to release the gift within me. I did as best I could, but it

was merely me trying to imitate what I heard. It was not authentic. But I kept praying and praying for the gift

of tongues. Three days later, in the midst of prayer for the gift, it happened. There was no manifestation of a

strong, rushing wind or tongues of fire, but these unintelligible words came barreling out of my mouth a mile

a minute. I definitely was not the source of these words, nor am I capable of repeating them. This was the

Holy Spirit Himself speaking through me. The experience was a little frightening, but also truly amazing. Af-

ter a few minutes, I stopped. I got down on my knees and I thanked God for the tremendous gift He’d just

given me.

My life has never been the same since that moment. As a result of my personal encounter with God, I know,

that I know, that I know that God is real. He exists. Everything revealed in Scripture and taught by the

Church is true! My love of Scripture and the desire to learn more about God dramatically increased. I have

developed a strong desire to praise and worship the Lord in song and dance. I will pray with and for

strangers as the Spirit leads me. By God’s grace I have led a

charismatic prayer group for several years and was provided

the opportunity to serve for 6 years on the Service Commit-

tee for the Archdiocese of San Antonio’s Catholic Center for

Charismatic Renewal. I am forever grateful to God for the

gift He gave me.

Please know that this gift is not for a select few. God wants

to release the power of His Holy Spirit in all His children. My

greatest desire is to be able to give the gift I’ve been given to

as many people as possible. I pray that God will enable me

to do just that. Come Holy Spirit! - Karen Adams

NUEVOS PRINCIPIOS PARA El CCCR
