Welcome To “The Changing Room”

I saw an advert the other day, for an online shopping experience called, ‘The Changing Room’, it said,

“Welcome To The Changing Room,”

Where you can try it on

Test it out

Send it back

Or, be forever changed

No prizes for guessing the advert was for a fashion retailer, offering clothes for you to try in the convenience of your own home.

Though often hyped as a new and innovative idea, shopping in the ease of your own home can hardly be described as new. It’s been around for a very long time. Sandwiched between the demise of the dinosaurs and the advent of computers, there was the mail order catalogue! Those giants roamed throughout Australia for decades.

Nearly a thousand years before the birth of Christ, Solomon, the third King of Israel, observed in his writings (known as the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible), in Chapter 1 verse 9:

"What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun." (NIV translation) - So we see ‘The Changing Room’ isn’t new.

In the New Testament book of Acts, chapter 1 verse 13, there is another room, and it’s called ‘The Upper Room’ it’s where the disciples were meeting when they experienced the power of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. If any room deserves the title of ‘The Changing Room’ it has to be this one. It was the place where a small group of very anxious individuals were forever changed by The Holy Spirit.

This ‘Upper Room’ in the book of Acts could also have been the same room where, previously, Jesus and His disciples had gathered for their ‘Last Supper’ together, before Jesus was crucified (See Mark’s Gospel chapter 14 verse 15 and Luke’s Gospel chapter 22 verse 12). In church each Sunday we take the Lord’s Supper or Communion as it is also known, doing this gives us a constant reminder that through Jesus’ death and resurrection we have been forever changed.

Jesus still meets with people, and any room in which people have an encounter with Him can be called a ‘Changing Room’. People find life-changing faith at church but also in the ease and convenience of their own homes.

All of the Covenant Churches connected to Jubilee have Small Groups, sometimes called Life Groups (small groups of ordinary people helping each other through life).

These groups meet in each other’s homes, where you can:

Try it on

Test it out

Send it back

Or be forever changed

If you are interested in knowing more about Small Groups/Life Groups call any of Jubilee’s Covenant Churches and they will be pleased to help you find a group that will suit you.

Blessings,

Orrell Battersby

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends,

Facebook - friend or foe it’s here to stay: ::Parents as primary caregivers and at home educators have an important role to play in helping kids navigate the social media landscape. With around 75% of 15 to 65 year olds using Facebook there must be some redeeming value. There are more Facebook users than there are taxpayers. Facebook is the most significant communication device since the telephone, so why the hysteria? We digest our information via the media, which just loves a controversy. You’ll never see an article that reads, “Grandparents stay in touch on Facebook with travelling grandchildren” or “Teacher connects with old U.K colleagues after 20 years – found them on Facebook”. Instead we see articles such as “Australia The World’s Facebook Bullying Capital” (news.com.au January 18). Yes, there are dangers but like the gun lobby’s catch cry “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people”, in the hands of the naïve or evil it can also be destructive. The interactive form of communication that is Facebook is so new. A culture of use is developing and kids are leading the way. The single biggest issue stemming from inappropriate use of Facebook is that kids don’t realise they’re now global publishers. And in this space there are rules and laws. However we are in an era where online law is lagging but it is quickly catching up. In the future highly inflammatory and derogatory publishing that some people engage in will be reigned in, but in the meantime, we need to help our kids. Schools will need to play a big part in creating this new Facebook culture. It can start with schools getting their own Facebook pages. This will go a long way to setting a tone for proper use and allow schools to keep pace with this evolving landscape. Parents as primary caregivers and at home educators also have a role to play in helping kids navigate this new landscape. Here are a few tips about how to guide kids through social media. 1. Teach appropriate language

Kids need guidelines regarding the language they use online. Here’s a simple guide for kids of all ages: “Don’t use language online that you wouldn’t use in front of your grandmother”. Language does get bluer as kids get older but Facebook seems to have lowered this threshold dramatically. Talk to kids about the appropriateness of the language they use on Facebook. 2. Limit friend acceptances and limit exposure to strangers

Young people collect Facebook friends like swap cards, which is not good practice. Being indiscriminate as to whom they befriend leaves kids open to the potential of being targeted by undesirable adults. It is more appropriate that their Facebook friends mirror their ‘real’ life friends. 3. Photos can last forever

More than 250 million photos are uploaded each day on Facebook, making sharing pictures the most popular activity. Some young people do place risqué pictures of themselves on Facebook. The central issue here involves the protection of the user’s reputation, which can be wrecked by one inappropriate photo spread around cyberspace via Facebook. 4. Time on Facebook – encourage moderate use

We want our children to have a balanced life with a variety of activities both indoors and outdoors. We also know that they need plenty of face-to-face interactions so they can maintain social connections. The addictive nature of social media means that some kids spend far too much time on Facebook. Late night log-ins on a school night are not in kids’ long term best interest and require parent discussion and negotiation to help kids find a balance.

It’s difficult as parents to work out our role when kids use Facebook. Being their ‘friend’ is not the answer. Neither is letting kids do as they please online. Our kids need our sensibilities and wisdom as parents to help guide them in the social media world, and create a safe culture of use. Denis Masseni is a Monash University/RMIT social media sessional lecturer. He is on a mission to have every school in Australia on Facebook. He is the CEO: socialwise.com.au guiding kids in social media. He is also Director: ponsored.com.au websites for schools. There is a nothing more divisive for parents today than a discussion about Facebook. With close on 11 million Australians now using Facebook, it has a participation rate like no other product or service. Article contributed by Denis Masseni

LONG TERM ABSENCES

Parents who wish to exclude their children from school for more than 10 days must complete an application for an Exemption from Compulsory Schooling (Non-state schools) form. The Education General Provisions Act 2006 mandates that all absences of longer than 10 days, other than for medical reasons, must be approved by the Principal of the school and be of sound educational grounds. These are available on our school website.

JUBILEE P&F FAMILY BBQ/BAND EVENING

APRE NEWS Parent Support Person Parent Support People are volunteers who are asked to help care for families in the school community. They work with class teachers and are answerable to the teacher and the School Administration. We greatly appreciate the assistance these people provide recognising there are so many parents who make this community what it is by their care for others.

The role of the Parent Support (but is not limited) is to:

Communicate with your teacher regarding any class issues, eg. families in need of support, hospitalisations, illness,

bereavement, etc

Attend support meetings with Assistant Principals

Organise friendship activities for the class parents/guardians/children (eg. there will be a Prep morning tea at school

one Friday morning soon) It is important to remember that the Class Teacher is usually the first ‘port-of-call’ for any student or pastoral issues.

Below are the Parent Support People who are in place at the moment.

(If there is a mistake in this listing (eg.spelling of your name, etc) please contact Trevor Sketcher ASAP)

World’s Greatest Shave

Shave your head for cancer research! I was approached several years back by a Year 7 student who wanted to do

his part in this. Since then we have always supported fund-raising at Jubilee for this worthy cause. This year again

there has been students asking about what they can do. They can be active in raising funds (supervised by parents)

and in demonstrating this by having their head shaved (or colouring their hair – for one day only).

It is important that children and parents see me to talk about his, and even more important to register with the

Leukaemia Foundation. Go to the Web page below and follow it to the World’s Greatest Shave page

AP ANTICS

G’day everyone! Our BCE Admin Planning Cluster at Surfers’ Paradise last Thursday and Friday was most beneficial as

it gave us the opportunity to complete our 2012 Strategic Renewal Planning, clarify our 2012 Admin Team structure and

responsibilities, learn about the new BCE Learning Management System available to schools and do some beneficial

networking with other school leaders from Gold Coast Catholic schools. I’d like to thank and congratulate Mrs Jeanette Conway

on effectively managing things back at school here as Teacher in Charge in our absence, despite some very challenging

weather conditions — well done Jeanette and staff !

School Assemblies: There has been some understandable confusion about school assemblies lately, given that we have had to

cancel two Friday assemblies so far (one due to the swimming carnival and one due to bad weather) and we’ve had two

Monday gatherings for special events (Opening school worship and Induction of Student Leaders) and Wednesday gatherings

for Ash Wednesday in the first half of this term. To clarify things for everyone — our weekly Whole-School Assembly takes

place each Friday afternoon from 2:15pm unless otherwise advised or prevented by inclement weather. From time-to-time,

there may be additional gatherings for special events or purposes and these will be notified via the school website, school

newsletter, school message signs and/or special notes. The Students of the Week and our Staff Stars of the Week from

the past two weeks and a couple of missed Age Champion Awards from our swimming carnival will be presented at this

Friday’s Assembly. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by recent cancellations and will do our best to keep you

advised wherever possible.

Special School Focus: Our Special School Focus for the first part of term has centred around correct school uniform.

While correct uniform remains important, at this Friday’s Assembly, I will speak to the students about our next Special

School Focus, which will centre on students being where they should be, when they should be and doing what they should

be doing.

Laughter is great and fun is no crime

If you do the Right Thing, in the Right Place, at the Right Time.

This will include being on time to school each morning, eating or playing in the right areas at breaks, moving around the school in

pairs and going directly and immediately to departure points each afternoon. As always, parents support is vital.

Prep — Yr 2 “Active Start” Motor Program: Once again this year we have engaged Mr John Greig to conduct his

wonderful “Active Start” gross motor skills program with our Prep, Yr 1 and Yr 2 classes. This will take place for 5

consecutive weeks each term, with the Term 1 program commencing this week. Yr 2 will have their sessions each Tuesday

morning and Prep & Yr 1 each Thursday. Parents are reminded that Tuesdays and Thursdays are sports uniform days for

these classes.

Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival: This Friday, 2 March our Jubilee Swimming Team will take part in the Gold Coast

Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival at Miami Pool. Mr Davies, Mr Sewell and Mr Mason will be attending with the team and

acting as officials at the carnival. We wish all out Jubilee competitors all the best for their events.

Yrs 5-7 Sports Program 2012: Our Yrs 5-7 students have nominated for Winter Season sporting activities, some of which take

them out of the school to compete against students from other local Catholic and state schools in sports such as Netball,

Soccer, Touch Football and Rugby League, while others have them taking part in some interesting activities in what we call

Tabloid Sports here at Jubilee. The first of four “cluster days” for these activities will take place next Monday 5 March and we

wish these students and their teacher/coaches all the best for the sporting season.

Follow us on Twitter @JubileePrimary We have created a Twitter account in order to give those people in our community

who use this social media tool, a way of getting updates on things that are happening in and around our school. This

medium is a pure information source for the community and we therefore ask that no comments be left using our

account name, please. There are already some tweets for you to check out!

Cybersafety Tuesday 6 March : Each family should have received a “What’s Happening Behind the Screens” information

booklet. This is in conjunction with a Cybersafety information session happening next Tuesday Night in the Jubilee Centre

Meeting Room. It is free to attend and a fantastic opportunity for those parents who have questions or are seeking further

information in this area. A representative from the ACMA will be coming to our school to preform an information session

about Cybersafety. Go to http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/ for more details.

Have a great Week 6 everyone !

Regards, Brian Mason & Michael Ball (Assistant Principals)

HPE & SPORTS NEWS

Catholic Swimming Carnival: This Friday 02/03/12 at Miami Pool. All students to meet Mr Davies at 7.35 am in the BCA.

Specific swimming events for each competitor will be handed out tomorrow (Wednesday 29/02/12). We look forward to this event and ask that all competitors double check what they need to bring to the day. Please check your information notice. All the best to these students as they go on to represent Jubilee at the next level.

Regional Swimming Carnival: (Night 1) was held at the TSS Pool last night. Jubilee were represented by Antonia Hurd and Brodie Monaghan. While these two promising young athletes have another night of competition to go in their quest to qualify for State level, it was clear to me, that regardless of the outcome on Wednesday night, they are both heading in a positive direction and persevering whenever they come across obstacles. We wish Antonia and Brodie all the best for night 2 of the championships.

District Netball: Congratulations to Gabby Scott and Jade Kahika who have made it through the first round of selections at the recent District Trials for netball. Good luck girls as you head to round 2 of the trials.

Running Club is well underway for groups 1 and 2 and I would like to acknowledge the wonderful help that is being put in from Mr Meiklejohn and our latest addition to the team, Mrs Barron. Without their fantastic input before and after school, programs like this simply couldn't run. Group 3 running club members will commence in week 7(names will be in next weeks newsletter).

Athletics Squad training has also commenced. Apologies for my absence today. As the year unfolds more opportunities will be available for children in both Running Club and Athletics Squad.

District Basketball and District Rugby League trials are coming up over the next few weeks. If you are born 2000 or 2001 and believe you are at representative standard and I have not spoken with you yet, please see Mr Davies tomorrow 29/02/12.

Total Football Academy: The lads from Total Football Academy are currently running a 6 week program for P- 6 children before school between 7.30 am and 8.30 am. All those involved have huge smiles on their faces as they try new and exciting soccer skills. Who knows, the next David Beckham or Harry Kewell may be amongst us. Regardless of the outcome, it is the journey that also should be enjoyed. Keep having fun kids !

Winter Sport/ Tabloid Sport: Training on Friday (02/03/12) for all teams (12.00pm - 1.00 pm) meet in the bottom covered area at 11.55am for rosters, equipment and training spot allocation. You should know by now who your teachers are and report to them so that they may mark roles and hand you your own roster for the season.

The first Cluster day is on Monday 05/03/12 and students are asked to check on their notice what gear they need for Monday and are to return all permission slips to their respective coaches/teachers.

Good luck to all students as they embark on their Winter Sports/Tabloid Sports journey and well done to the many

kids who have shown the courage to experience a new activity or sport.

Lunchtime play equipment: Students have done a pretty good job with lunch time play equipment so far this year. It is, however, far from perfect. Please return all play equipment to the bags/buckets that each item has come from. Start to tidy up just before the bell if possible. Ensure all gear is back in bucket/bag as you make your way to your class lines ready for your next learning time.

Special mention of thanks to Ryan Pearce, Dalton Howlett, Daniel Helman, Jaylan Toó, Nic Mc Leod, Jack Gambrill and Jack Bowen who have been fantastic so far this year with helping to tidy up where others have left a mess. Ryan Pearce has in fact been outstanding every morning as he has also helped with set up of post protectors on almost every day this year. Well done Ryan !

Cross Country: Only 4 weeks to our annual Cross Country Carnival.29/03/12. We are training as part of P.E. classes, however, students are strongly encouraged to do some of their own preparation as we move closer to the big day. Training regularly is a little like doing your homework. Leave it to the last minute and you will definitely struggle. Train regularly and the competition day will be so much more fun. Aim for 3 runs per week. Run for 10 minutes to begin with. Then increase each run by 30 seconds. Before you know it you can run easily for 20 minutes.

Yours in HPE/SPORT
