Since, therefore, jou seemed to havofailed to grasp the situation In nil Itsdetails In so much that the proper dis-cipline and loyally to Its teachersnecmed lucking In the school Itself, nndthat a feeling of discord seemed tohave arisen in the community, vvn

Judged that the best Interests ot thoWalluku school demanded jour tranx-fc- r

ns well as that of Mrs. Harry be-

tween whom and joursplf themseemed to he an open rupture.

But In vlcvv of the fact that a largonumber of the citizens, of Wallukuhavo petitioned this department forjour retention In tho Walluku school,we defer to their Judgment to this extent.

That jou will be allowed to retainjour position on trial until such n timeas tho department becomes satisfiedthat jou are or are not able to materially Improve tho situation In yourschool.

It will be necessary for jou to rtn

nil In jour power to bring about cordial relatlonts both between joursellas principal and each nnd every one oljour assistants nnd also among joulassistants themselves.

To this cud we believe that mutualapologies will be ncccssarj', at leastbetween Mrs. Harry and voure-if- , nndalso between Mrs. Copeland nnd Mrs.Harry.

To this end wo have addressed it

like suggestion to Mrs Harrj', whowill, wo trust, meet jou half vvaj Inthis matter.

Wo wish to thank jou for jourfaithful work In the past, nnd trustthat jour future mnj be bright lu yourpresent field, nnd further. In all thlUK

right nnd necessary to the welfare ofjour school, tho department promisesIts sjmpathy and active supiort.

Yours respectfully.(Signed) JAMKS C. DAVIS,

Superintendent ot 1'ubllc InstructionHonolulu, II I , Aug. 22. 1905.

Mrs S. II. Harry, Walluku. Maul.Bear Madame: Your reply to the

charges brought against jou by jourprincipal, Mr. C. K. Copeland. has beencarefully considered bj the depart-ment.

Your frank nvowal that, as regardscertain of tho charges, jou were atfault, has Impressed the departmentIn jour favor.

However, the department cannotoverlook any Insubordination on thepart of any of Its teachers; such In-

subordination forming a Just cause foidismissal. i U

As jou nre aware, any friction botween principal and assistant musthave n bad effect upon the children, causing them to take sides In the controvers)- - nnd rendering them dlslojnlto their teachers and their school.

This state ot affairs we feel must notl.o allowed to continue In tho Wallukuschool, and It we nllovv jou to remainIn jour present position, we must Insist that jou do all In jour power lobring about a reconciliation betweenjourself and Mr. Copeland ns well fitbetween jourself nnd Mrs Copeland. To this end we feel that there shouldbe mutual apologies made, and w

hivo written to Mr. Copeland in suchtenor that we feel sure that he nndMrs. Copeland will be glad to meetjou half waj In the matter.

In tho future, jou must rememberthat Mr. Copeland Is the principal ofthe school, and hence responsible tiltho department for Its conduct, nndthat all reasonable requests Hint hemay make should bo met In a spiritot cheerful anpilebccnco and uf lojalhelpfulness

If jou feel that jou cannot renderthe depirtimnt such lojal service Inany given position, It would becomejour duty to nsk for a tiausfcr tosome other school.

Wo trust that jou will meet the dif-

ficulty In t..o right spirit, nnd that Intho future there will bo only harmonybetween jourself and jour associates.

Yours respectfully,(Signed) JAMKS C DAVIS.

From this, It Is a fair conclusion tn

that two-fift- of tho piactlce of thoJapanese phjslclans Is drawn fromother nationalities than their own.

I tailed your attention, nt your lastmeeting, to the fact that In the pastfour and one-hal- f jcars 41' Japanese theand 52 white physicians had been ad-

I know of no Japanese physician whohas been required to pass his exam-inations lu the Kngllsh language or thewho has been refused an examinationIn his ouinlnnguage.

I believe he evidence tends to disclose a growing desire to exploit the

i profession beyond" the limits claimedinu a grgwing uisrespcci lor law onthe part of the Japanese.
