From the October 23 2016 Meeting,

a précis of Peter Korn’s morning lecture, Part I

Peter – who describes himself as “a seedaholic, a plantaholic,

and a digaholic” - gardens in the southern tip of Sweden, an

area with high annual rainfall. Perhaps because of this, he is

drawn to hot, dry landscapes, and their attendant flora. These

plants, and the alpines which he also loves, do not adapt well

to his garden’s cold, wet summers under standard gardening

techniques. After a disastrous initial rock garden twenty years

ago incorporating horse manure and random boulders piled

into a mound, Peter began developing gardening techniques

suited to both his local climate and to the plants he wished to

grow there. He made plants his livelihood, operating a nursery

for fifteen years. Currently he is specializing in landscape

design and installation, lectures, and writing.

Peter’s goal in gardening is to understand what plants need,

and to learn how to give it to them, based on observations of

growing conditions in their wild habitats. After the speedy

demise of his initial rock garden, he began the long process of

reproducing the wild habitats he had begun to observe. The

highly acidic, aluminum-tainted soil of his property, covered in

spruce, was inimical to many plants, but had good igneous rock

formations not far below the soil surface.

Peter first chose sloping locations with good north-south

orientation, removed the spruce trees, and stripped the soil

down to the rock formations. Additional microclimates were

created with placement of additional boulders and scree. He

finally added (by hand) many dump-truck loads of pure coarse

sand to the beds. The sand bed depth ranges from 20 – 30 cm.

Abundant soil mycorrhizae is found in the slightly acidic sand.

The root balls of all plants are washed clean of growing

medium before planting in the sand beds. Peter feeds and

waters these plants only once upon planting. He finds the

plants are slow to establish in their first year, but start growing

well in their second. His main animal pests are badgers and

moose, despite a two-metre deer fence surrounding his

property.

Peter, as a true plantaholic, grows species from around the

world in his sand beds, combining steppe species with dry

prairie species, New Zealand megaflora with Himalayan

alpines, and California natives with bulbs and alpines from

Turkey. He has travelled extensively to many target habitats,

and has been aided in his global acquisitions by the efforts of

his brother, a botanist, who, during a ten-year bicycle trip from

Sweden to China, collected and sent to Peter seeds of over

7,000 plants he found along the way.

Peter shared many photos of plants from his travels in his talk,

including Eremurus tianshanicus from Kyrgystan, Helichrysums

from Turkey, and Campanula choruhensis growing in crevices

of vertical cliffs in the Pontic Alps.

To duplicate the growing conditions of alpines such as

Campanula choruhensis, Peter creates crevice gardens using a

standard sand bed base, placing flattish boulders vertically on

top. The spaces between each boulder are carefully packed

with more sand and exposed surfaces are top dressed with

scree and larger stones between plantings. In these crevice

gardens he can create many different environments suitable to

plants as diverse as shade-loving ferns and woodlanders to

arid desert growers.

Following are photos and information about some of the plants

in his garden.

Kalimeris incisa ‘Blue Star’ is a low, spreading plant with blue

aster-like flowers which blooms from June to September.

Peter’s largest rock garden took eight years to develop. After

laboriously removing the soil to expose the underlying rock and

adding the sand beds (all by hand), he has planted largely

Californian and Turkish species on its south-facing slope,

Himalayan and New Zealand species on the north-facing slope,

and perennials and grasses on the flat stream bed between

them. He tends to use small groups of single species, about ten

specimens each, interspersed with hundreds of single plant

specimens. Having dug the slopes by hand, he knows where

there are underlying seeps and can customize his

microclimates to the particular needs of specific plants as

needed.

Grown in the bulb greenhouse, where excess rainfall is

controlled via a retractable roof, Calochortus plummerae is one

of Peter’s favourite California natives, and easy to grow for him

in a cold greenhouse.

Monarda bradburiana

Photo: de.wikipedia.org.peganum

Monarda bradburiana from eastern North America has a long

bloom period and mildew resistance.

Anthemis tinctoria (now correctly named Cota tinctoria),

ranging in the wild from the Mediterranean basin to southwest

Asia, blooms all summer long. It is a short-lived perennial which

reseeds readily, but Peter finds it easy to control.

Delosperma basutica has brilliant yellow flowers with a white

eye. It forms a tidy little mound covered in blooms, and is very

easy to grow for Peter. He has found it to be the Delosperma

most resistant to winter wet conditions.

User: Grin (Peter Gervai, Hungarian Wikipedia)

Peter grows the annual grass Taeniatherum caput-medusae,

originally from southern Europe, northern Africa, and the Middle

East, as a foliage accent in his rock gardens. In North America

it is regarded as a dangerously aggressive invader of pasture

and rangeland, particularly in the Mid-West and Rockies.

Planting Medusahead, as it is commonly known, is not

recommended in North American gardens.

Arenaria alfacariensis, a choice alpine from Spain, forms tight

buns of silver-green triangular foliage with tiny white flowers in

late spring. It is highly drought tolerant.

Part II of Peter’s morning presentation will be printed in a

later issue of the Journal due to the space constraints of

the Seedex issue.

Sometimes a species will enjoy its conditions excessively, to

the point of becoming a weed, such as Lewisia tweedyi and

other species in the genus. Peter finds that the Lewisias are not

for the driest parts of the rock garden but prefer some

moderate moisture.

Iris aphylla has huge dark purple flowers on six – thirty cm

stems. The photo below may be that of the Hungarian

subspecies. Its native range is from eastern Europe to western

Asia. It blooms in early to midsummer.

2016 has been another successful year for us. Our Balance

sheet shows that we have $42,788.63 in GIC’s, and

$20, 348.44 in the bank.

To some of you this may seem to be too much in immediate

cash, but it is always wise to have at least one year’s ex-

penses readily available.

Our sales revenue for the year ending June 30, 2016 was

$18,623.24, and our interest income was $634.23. This

makes a total of $19,257.47 in total revenue. The highlights

of this income are as follows; memberships - $8,291.00,

auctions - $539.00, plant sales - $1450.83 and Super Plant

Sale - $5,277.64..

Tying this back to the liquid funds in the bank, our total

expenses were $16,809.58. Taken from the total revenue of

$19,257.47, leaves a profit of $2,447.89 for the year.

Our major expenses as usual were Speaker payments and

speaker expenses and hall rentals. Since the major objective

of ORG&HPS is to share knowledge and our love of plants,

we are ensuring that our purpose is funded for many years in

the future.

Thanks for your attention. As always if there are questions at any time, just ask, or send me an email.

ORG&HPS Seed Exchange 2016 -2017 Arie Vanspronsen The ORG&HPS seed exchange has had another excellent year with 1220 packets of seeds donated by 65 members.

This is 142 more packages than last year and the choices continue to improve.

We are missing some previous donors, so hopefully those donors who provided in the past will return to the Seedex

and will donate again in the future.

We also added 21 new donors this year. That is awesome.

You can submit your Seedex Order Online, making Payment through Paypal.

Go to www.onrockgarden.com and look for “Seed Exchange” on the Menu Bar.

equal to the number of requests late on December 31, 2016. It is not possible to accommodate late orders. Orders are

filled on a 'first come first served' basis with donor orders filled before non-donors. Don't be disappointed - send your

order early!

Avoid the Christmas mail delays.

Plant Names

We try to list seeds under the current plant name, correctly spelled, as defined by ThePlantList (http://

www.theplantlist.org/) for species and by the RHS (https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants) for cultivars. “Syn. Genus species” at

the beginning of a description is a former name (Synonym) under which the seed was donated.

Plants Considered Invasive In Ontario

Seedex plants that are listed by Ontario’s Invasive Species Awareness Program (http://www.invadingspecies.com/

invaders/plants-terrestrial/) are denoted by the symbol [i] at the beginning of the Germination Code.

Wild collected seed

All collections are easily found as there is an * after the species name.

Plant information

Generally colours are abbreviated to the first three or four letters. Many entries had several colours and the attempts to

accommodate these may be confusing. As an example ye/or is yellow orange and gr/br is green-

ish brown. The system doesn’t work, however, for bl/pu which could be blue purple

or black purple but either sounds good to me!

The height of each plant is given in cm but I often rounded off the numbers. The first two letters of the plant type are

used, for example, AN: annual, BI: biennial, PE: perennial, BU: bulb, GR: grass, SH: shrub, TR:

tree, VI: vine. Parent plants are listed but their offspring may differ so be prepared for delightful surprises.

Our donor ‘Top Ten’ list is as follows.

Bernard Carrier 142, Sharon Middleton 83, Carol Clark 57, Virginia Hildebrandt 52, Anna Leggatt 50, Annie Belih 47,

Diana Pooke 44, Katy Anderson 33, Beverley Wagar 29, Susan and Mike Dolbey 28. Congratulations!

Members in the U.S. Ordering Seed

Those in the USA should order only those seeds approved for entry into the USA.

Those plants which are restricted have the symbol [X] in the germination code. If you order any of these, we can not

send them.

Please keep in mind that a Small Lots of Seed Permit is required and must be sent in with your order, along with the

Conditions, an itemized list of the seed names, your own mailing label and the yellow and green mailing label. If you

have recently applied for the permit, and expect it soon you can send it later on.

Please keep in mind that you are only allowed 50 packets of seed, but if you fill in all 60 spaces, we'll stop when we get

to 50 if you were lucky enough to get all your wishes!

Thank you for making this a pleasurable and educational experience.

KEY to ORG&HPS GERMINATION CODES

SYMBOLS, LETTERS and NUMBERS

* This species needs special care which is described on the reverse side.

? We have no information on this species. We sometimes provide an informed guess about which approach you should try. Let us know what is successful.

! Sow immediately. Either the viability of these seeds is short or the species propagates best with fresh seed. Stored seed might be coaxed into germination with temperature cycling and patience.

[i] This species is considered invasive in Ontario.

[X} This seed is restricted and cannot be imported to the United States.

A Sow @ 20°C. Seed germinates within 3 months.

B Sow @ 20°C. If seed does not germinate within 3 months, try 4°C for 1-2 months, then 20°C again.

C Sow @ 20°C for 3 months, then place @ 4°C for 3 months.

D Use repeated cycles of 20°C, then 4°C for 3 months each. Germination is very prolonged.

E Sow @ 20°C for 6 weeks, then place @ 4°C for 6 weeks, then slowly raise temperature to 10°C for 6 weeks. If there is no germination, repeat the cycle.

F Sow @ 4°C.

G Sow @ 4°C for 3 months, then place @ 20°C for 3 months.

H Use repeated cycles of 4°C, then 20°C for 3 months each. Germination is very prolonged.

J Sow @ 4°C for 3 weeks, then place @ 20°C.

K Sow @ 10°C.

L Expose to fluctuating outdoor winter temperatures including freezing for 3 months. Gradually increase light and temperature in spring.

N Sow directly in garden.

1 Resents transplanting.

2 Requires darkness.

3 Requires light or the seed is very fine. Surface sow and expose to light.

4 Germination is improved by using GA3. A source is www.gardensnorth.com

5 Germination is successful only when GA3* is used. A source is www.gardensnorth.com

6 Requires scarification. Nick or rub between sheets of sandpaper.

7 Requires soaking. Place in warm water until seeds swell, usually 24-48 hours. Discard water and any seeds that remain floating.

8 Pulpy coat inhibits germination. Remove by soaking and rinsing in clean water for approximately 7 days. Discard water.

9 At one time, we advised "Tails may inhibit germination. Remove them." The advice applied primarily to pulsatillas and clematises. Our most recent data indicates that leaving the tails on has no effect on germination.

WHAT OUR TEMPERATURE DESIGNATIONS MEAN

4°C Either place seeds outdoors to be exposed to a wide range of winter temperatures including freezing or put them in a refrigerator (not a deep freezer).

10°C Either place seeds outdoors in spring or fall or choose a very cool indoor location.

20°C Either place seeds in a sheltered outdoor location in mid to late spring or grow at room temperature.

3 Requires light or the seed is very fine. Surface sow and expose to light.

4 Germination is improved by using GA3*.

5 Germination is successful only when GA3* is used.

6 Requires scarification. Nick or rub between sheets of sandpaper. 7 Requires soaking. Place in warm water until seeds swell, usually 24-48 hours. Discard the water and any seeds that remain floating.

8 Pulpy coat inhibits germination. Remove by soaking and rinsing in clean water daily for 7 days. Discard the water.

9 Tails may inhibit germination. Remove them.

Effects of Drought in Your Garden

The summer of 2016 was brutally dry for much of the province

of Ontario. I am interested in hearing from our members of any

plants that coped particularly well with the stress of the drought

in their gardens. If you had any unexpected triumphs, or

unexpected losses, with plants under drought conditions last

summer, please send me an email with the details. I am

hoping to compile a list of drought-resistant plants for our

growing region in the Journal.

If you have any information you would like to contribute, please
