AUTHOR INDEX Volume 47, Number 8

Authors are required to submit manuscripts electronically usingthe Journal of Lipid Research Online Submission and Review Systemavailable at http://www.jlr.org/submit.Only PDF format may be sub-mitted online to JLR. All color art must be in RGB format.

ScopeThe Journal of Lipid Research ( JLR) publishes original articles

and reviews in the broadly defined area of biological lipids.Manuscripts relating to lipids, including those addressing problemsin biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, cell biology, genetics, molecular medicine, clinical medicine, and metabolism, areencouraged. Major criteria for acceptance of articles are new insightsinto mechanisms of lipid function and metabolism and/or genes reg-ulating lipid metabolism along with sound primary experimentaldata. Interpretation of the data is the authors’ responsibility, andspeculation should be labeled as such. Manuscripts that provide newways of purifying, identifying, and quantifying lipids are invited forthe Methods section of the Journal. Because JLR has worldwide distri-bution, it encourages contributions from investigators in all coun-tries, but articles must be submitted in clear and concise English.

Prior PublicationThe JLR publishes original and review articles. Except for re-

view articles, the JLR will not publish articles in which a significantportion of the data, in the form of text, figures, and tables, hasbeen published or submitted for publication elsewhere. In accor-dance with this policy, the JLR requires that the authors state, intheir cover letter, that no significant amount of data reported intheir manuscript has been published elsewhere or is under consid-eration for publication elsewhere. If some of the data presented inthe manuscript have been previously published, or such is contem-plated, a reprint or a copy of the manuscript must accompany thearticle. If, in the Editor’s judgment, the prior publication rendersthe submitted article nonoriginal, the manuscript will be returnedto the authors immediately, without review.

Studies Involving Human Subjects and Patient-Oriented ResearchThe research described in papers submitted to JLR, including

patient-oriented research articles, that involve the use of human beings, must adhere to the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki (seehttp://www.wma.net/e/policy/b3.htm), as well as to Title 45, US Codeof Federal Regulations, Part 46, Protection of Human Subjects, RevisedNovember 13, 2001, effective December 13, 2001 (see http://hhs.gov/ohrp/humansubjects/guidance/45cfr46.htm). These studies must beapproved by an appropriate Institutional Review Board or Committee, and informed consent must be obtained from the human subjects ortheir representatives. If registration of clinical studies is required inaccord with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors(ICMJE) (see http://prsinfo. clinicaltrials.gov/icmje.html and http://www.icmje.org), then such registration must be indicated in a footnotein the manuscript.

The Methods section of the paper must include: 1) a statement ofprotocol approval from an Institutional Review Board or Committeeand 2) a statement that informed consent was obtained from thehuman subjects or their representatives.

Ethical Use of Animals in ResearchAll investigations involving animals that are reported in manu-

scripts submitted to JLR must be conducted in conformity with thePublic Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use ofLaboratory Animals, incorporated in the Institute for LaboratoryAnimal Research (ILAR) Guide for Care and Use of LaboratoryAnimals (see http://dels.nas.edu/ilar_n/ilarhome/guide.shtml). Allsuch investigations must be approved by an appropriate InstitutionalReview Board or Committee.

All papers submitted to JLR that include investigations involvinganimals must include in the Methods section: 1) a statement indicatingthat the research was conducted in conformity with this PHS policyand 2) a statement that the studies were approved by an appropriateInstitutional Review Board or Committee.

Monoclonal AntibodiesPapers in which monoclonal antibodies constitute an essential

reagent must contain a footnote indicating how a qualified investigatorcan obtain the antibody or a sample of the parent hybridoma cells.

Manuscript Categories1. Full-length regular research articles. Such articles present origi-

nal research and address a clearly stated specific hypothesis or ques-tion. Papers should provide novel approaches and new insights intothe problem addressed. Manuscripts dealing with mechanisms areespecially encouraged.

Review process. Manuscripts are assigned to Associate Editors orEditorial Board members, who determine whether methods are

adequate and if data support the conclusions drawn and providenew and exciting information that is of the high quality expected byJLR. Papers generally will be assigned to at least two reviewers inaddition to the Associate Editor, and the final determination ofpublication will be made by the Associate Editor in consultationwith the Editorial Board.

2. Short Communications. Such manuscripts must be hypothesisdriven, highly original and innovative, and address a problem of broadappeal to the readership. The papers must be brief and to the point.Authors should include in the cover letter a clear statement that thework is being submitted as a Short Communication. A maximum offour printed pages in the Journal will be allocated to each ShortCommunication. As a general guideline, the abstract should be limitedto about 150 words, the text to no more than 2000 words, the maxi-mum number of combined tables and figures to no more than four, and the number of references to no more than 25. The size of each ofthese components can vary, as long as the entire presentation does notexceed the limit of four printed pages in the Journal. Submissions thatare judged by the Editor to be too long will be returned without review.

Review process. The Editor and an Associate Editor will review thepaper. In addition to the quality of the work, the article will bejudged on novelty, importance of the data, and the value of makingthe information available to the lipid research community on anaccelerated basis. Review is expedited and papers will appear in thenext available issue.

3. Methods papers. The editors will consider significant new/novel contributions in the field of lipid methodology; the papermust provide sufficient details so that the method can be readilyreproduced. These papers should be short and concise. At the timeof submission the authors should indicate that the manuscript is aMethods manuscript.

Review process. Similar to that of a full-length regular research article.4. Review articles. The Journal welcomes critical reviews on cur-

rent, timely topics. Reviews should be concise and should provide abalanced analysis and summary of the topic. The information shouldbe understandable to scientists in other related fields. A good andcritical review will develop new insights into the field and proposepotential new research opportunities.

Review process. Reviews need to stand up to the scrutiny of expertsin the field; the manuscripts will be reviewed by an Associate Editorand at least one member of the Editorial Board.

5. Reports. Short reports (max 2,000 words) of special interest, suchas conference summaries of immediate importance, nomenclature, and timely information, will be considered for publication.

Review process. Subject to approval by the Editor and Deputy Editorfor relevance and timeliness, these will be reviewed by an AssociateEditor and/or at least one member of the Editorial Board.

6. Patient-oriented research articles. Such articles will includestudies in which human subjects play an important role and where atleast one of the authors has had direct contact with the subjects. Forexample, a study where a perturbation is used to gain mechanistic orclinically relevant information would meet the criteria. It does notmatter if the samples (blood, other fluids, tissue, cells) derived fromthe subjects in the study are subsequently used in an in vivo, ex vivo,or in vitro analysis (for example, the incubation of lipoproteins withcells). What does matter is that the results be linked to characteristicsof the human sources of the samples (individuals or groups) and thatsomeone on the investigatory team has actually seen the patients (asopposed to blood or tissue from a blood bank or tissue bank). Forexample, genetic studies where participants are seen by one of theauthors and where either baseline or pre- and post-perturbation bio-chemical, biophysical, and/or demographic data obtained meet thecriteria. In summary, papers appearing in the Patient-OrientedResearch category must have some link to particular human charac-teristics. These manuscripts must include a statement of institutionalapproval of the study and informed consent of the participants.

Review process. Manuscripts are assigned to Associate Editors orEditorial Board Members who determine whether methods are ade-quate and if data support the conclusions drawn and provide new andexciting information that is of the high quality expected by JLR. Paperswill generally be assigned to at least two reviewers in addition to theAssociate Editor, and the final determination of publication will bemade by the Associate Editor in consultation with the Editorial Board.

Charges to AuthorsThere is a per -page charge for all published manuscripts of

US$55, as well as a charge of US$450 per color figure. (Note: whenusing the electronic submission system, any figure submitted incolor will be reviewed and processed with the understanding thatthe figure will be published in color.)

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS
