The International Order of St. Luke the Physician(United Kingdom)

Prealn:hhe lfrom the official handbook of_the Order )"A Manual of Christian Healing"

"TIIE ORDER OF ST. LUKE TIE PITYSICIAN comprises Clergy andlaity with the Church Universal who feel impelled to make the P\thistry ofHealing a regular part of their vacation. Members of the order devotethemselves to the study and teachings of the true relation between theSpiritual Life and Bodily and Mental health.

Members of the Order of St. Luke believe Healing to be an essential partof the teaching and pratice of our Lord Jesus Christ as set forth in theGospels and in the Acts of the Apostles. They are specially concemedwith the records of St. Luke the Physician and Evangelist. They desire tobring back this teaching to its rightful place within the Christian Church, through constmctive teaching and through co-operation with those clergy, psycologists who have discovered in the Divine Being the Source andsecret of Wholeness."

These quotations from the preamble set out the basis of membership of theOrder of St. Luke. When this basis, together with the Rule of the order isput into practice, it means that Members are invited to adopt a particular"life-style" which is educative and missionary. They are not asked to

attend a multiplicity of meetings, though there will be some whereChapters are formed, but rather, to exhibit the positive radiant "life-style"of Christ in action in them, and through them, in their own life-situationswhatever they might be, and by this "hfe-style" to witness to the reality ofthe Healing Christ today. /For the Rw/c a/the Order scc inside the hack cover/.

SALVATOR is the Latin word which means Saviour (Healer) and isconnected directly to our Badge and its meaning.

Of Days quad trysYour life unfoldsin a continuous successionof experiences and expectations. No two days are the same,no years leave you unaltered.

Your way through lifewill not remain the same. There are years of happiness and years of suffering. There are years of abundance, and years of poverty, years of hope, and of disappointment,of building up, and of breaking down. But God has a firm hold on you through everything.

There are years of strengthand years of weakness, years of certainty, years of doubt. It is all part of life, and it is worth the effortto live it to the endand not give up before it is accomplished.

you need never `stop growing.A new future is always possible.Even on the other side of deatha new existence waits for youin the fullness of that glorywhich God has prepared for youfrom the beginning.

From rtiTe owardenCelebrating Wesley 250On Whitsunday' May 21st. 1738Charles Wesley experiencedConversion, and his brother Johnunderwent a similar experience a fewdays later. The Methodist Churchhas rightly been celebrating the250th. Anniversary of these greatevents. Charles was thehymnwriter, and the whole ofChristendom is grateful for the richharvest of hymns he has handeddol^m. tine of his hymns begins:

My heart is full of Christ, and longsIts glorious matter to declareOf Him I make my loftier songsI cannot from His praise forbearMy ready tongue make haste to singThe glories of my God and King.

Like many hymns it is dreived fromscripture - in this case Psalm 45. Thisis a royal psalm written for themarriage of a king to a foreignprincess. The Jews included it intheir Scriptures because they saw itin religious terms as celebrating themarriage of the Messianic King tohis bride Israel - the Messiah wholoved Israel so much that he came torescue her from domination andoppression. Put in Christian temlSthe psalm proclaims the marriage ofChrist with His Bride the Church. It speaks of the King - Thou artfairer than the children of men: Godhath anointed thee with the oil ofgladness above thy fellows'. And ofthe bride lThe King's daughter all isglorious within: her clothing is ofwrought gold. She shall be brought

unto the king in rainment ofneedleworkl. When we translatethe psalm into Christian terms ofChrist and his bride it takes onfrightening significance, because theBride of Christ which is the Churchis also His Body - his hands and hisfeet. We dwell in Him and He in us.And so his attributes are to be seeninus. We are to interpret mm tothe world, displaying his beauty, his splendour and his glory. Theattributes of King and Bride arequCmOmOuS.

How shall we clothe ourselves withthe beauty of Christ? 'Your beautyshould not reside in outwardadomment, but in the inmost centreof your being, with its imperishableornaments - a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of high value in the sightofGod'. 'Put on the garments thatsuit Godls people - compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience. Be forbearing with oneanother and forgiving - you mustforgive, as the Lord forgave you. Tocrown all there must bc. love, to bindall together and complete thewholel. 'Let Christls peace bearbiter in your hearts; to this peaceyou were called, as members of asingle bodyl. These are theessential ingredients of one who hasbeen captured by the beauty ofChrist, whose heart is filled withChrist and who is clothed with hisbeauty, and who therefore will .minister Christ to the world. paulsums it up admirably 'Through

faith you are all sons of God throughJesus Christ. You have all put onChrist as a garment. You have put ona new nature, which is constantlybeing renewed in the image of theCreator, and brought to know Godl.

Here is a lovely prayer by EricMilner White, late Dean of York, who was the man who, while atKingls Cambridge, devised theFestival of Nine Lessons and Carolswhich is now world famous:

Help us O Godin the faith of thy Holy Apostle, Paul,to put on Christ, our Master, thine only begotten Son:To put on the robe of his generosity, who for us and our salvation came down from heaven;the robe of his purity, who was tempted as we are, yet without sin;the robe of his Obedience, whose meat was to do thy will;the robe of Humility, who was among us as one that serveth;the robe of his. Faith and Courage, who, while we were yet in our sins, died for us;the robe of his Priesthood,

In order that we may follow our Christian calling on deep commit-ment to Jesus may we all be able to join Charles Wesley, and say:

lMy heart is full of Christ, and longs

Its glorious matter to declarel.

Wardenls Wanderings,

On the first Saturday in May I travelled to Beacons field to induct theRevd Tenniel Evans into the Order. Tenniel is a professional actorwho also serves in the non stipendary ministry at st Mary and AllSaints, Beaconsfield where the Service took place. A large crowd fromthe membership of the Church gathered together, including the Rectorand Curate as well as some clergy from neighbouring parishes. lt wasevident that the Healing Ministry is well-established at this church, and we tmst that the fellowship of the Order will assist Tenniel in thisministry. *

In June I spoke about O.S.L. at the Sunday moming worship at stMaryls, Atherstone, and inducted Mary Gilbert into the Order. Wenow look forward to the formation of a chapter at Atherstone in theAutumn.

At the end of June I preached at the first Healing Service to be held a[St Thomas, Long ford, Coventry. A large congregation had assembled, and many asked for ministry.

During June I also took part in a session on Healing at CoventryDiocesan Summer School at Offchurch Retreat House. A resolutionwas sent to the Bishop asking him to consider appointing an AdvisoryGroup to assist the parishes, and he immediately responded to thisrequest.

The Annual Conference at Queens College,Birmingham proved yet again to be a time of precious christianfellowship. Saturday morning was given to listening to Dr CarolinsColkier of the christrian Medical Fellowship speaking about AIDS.She was certainly in full command of her subject, and urged us all toPray Personally and in public worship for AIDS suffererd. "I have yetto hear them prayed for in a churchl she said. on saturday aftemoonwe listened to The Revd Charles Doane, Warden of Spennithome HallHome of Healing in Wensleydale, who addressed himself generally tothe subject of Healing, and challenged some commonly held attitudes.During the AGM in the evening, the warden reminded conferencemembers that he would be leaving his Rectory in Coventry at the endof the year, when he and his wife, sybil will retire to Thirsk, Northyorkshire. The Administrator, in his report, reminded everyone thatthe Warden is now entering his final year of office, and that a new

office, and that a new warden would be appointed at the conferencenext year. The proceedure is for chaplains to make nominations tothe Administrator, and the Administrator to announce the result atthe Annual General Meeting during the Annual Conference. In orderto achieve maximum participation, chapters should discuss thismatter and pray about it, making any nomination they might havethrough their Chaplains. Lone members can always communicate onthis matter through their nearest chaplain, or any Chaplain theyhappen to know.

A Meditation - Keith Havers

Reading: StJohn5-1 -9

Lord Jesus, make me Whole;Grant me no resting Place, until I rest, heart, mind and soulThe captive of Thy grace

BrynRees

A lady in her early 50,s came to a healing session one Wednesdaymorning. she is a farmerls wife and a teacher suffering the M.E.syndrome with its attendant loss of energy. She could take earlyretirement with a financial settlement, yet wants tO be Whole, SO thatshe can continue with her work.

To the Jesus question: "Do you want to be made Whole"? she hasanswered in the affirmative, an answer of which Jesus would approve. After the first session She lPhOned tO report a Slight improvement, which ongoingly has been sustained through these Summer monthsenabling her to make a trip With her Church to Monheim whichjoumey looked unlikely a few months back.

If, on the joumey towards WhOleness we can make the Same POSitiVeanswer to our Lordls question, then let no delay shake our believing inHim to accomplish what he will according to His promise of abundantlife (John 10:10). Of the faith required it holds good, first the blade andthen the ear, then the full corn in the ear.

So too of wholeness. It can be like a seed which a woman took, Placed in a pot, covered Withsoil until at length there came the stem, the leaves and then theflower.

william portsmouth in his book lHealing Prayerl (page 69) has thismeditation:

Be Still and know that I am God within you, making you Whole....Silence

Thanksgiving: Lord, I give you thanks and Praise that You aremaking me whole according to the Promise in Your Word. Amen

Eucharistic Mystery

By what strange alchemy, beloved Lord,do I meet your living Presence

within the Eucharistic bread and Wine?what is this grace, that common things

like bread and wine, become the open doorby which you come to me to bless?

The Bread, produced from the Crushed death Of grain, bruised and broken, milled into dust,

remade with artful skills by bakerls handsinto loaves for our daily use,

within the Eucharistic liturgyremains just ordinary bread.

And yet, and yet, that Ordinary breadfrom which the slice was cut for tea,

is charged with a sublime realitythat has nothing to do with bread,

nor of death, but speaks of life eternal!it has become the Bread of Life

and as I hold it in my wortal handsI know you there, my living Lord,

and my soul bows in homage and in awe.By what pure transport Of the soul,

by what secret path do you enter breadand bless me with your deathless life?

The Wine, product of so many thousand deathsas grapes are crushed and drained of life,

made for festivals and celebrations;birthday meals and trysting lovers;

for remembrance on the Holy Table.on that Table, in that Chalice,

the wine, all gleaming red as once your bloodgleamed from your hands and Side

when, hard as human hearts, driven ironpierced you and drained away your life!

My Lord, how does that redly gleaming Wine, which shall kiss my lips but briefly

become your presence which redeems my souland fills my sinful heart with grief

for all the pain my sin has brought tO you?How do I hold within my hands

the presence which cannot be held with hands.

A Healing churchBishop owen Darling of canberra, Australia, gave four addresses, drawmgheavily 9n.Personal experiences from previous parish ministries and also onrecent mlsslons in papua-New Guinea. Two such experiences will be sufficientto illustrate a keynote theme which seemed to permeate these experiences.obedience to the prompting o£ the Holy spirit is using the Gifts of the HolySpirit.

First, arriving home some years ago in a new and very conservative parish, hefelt prompted very strongly ln one of the first services, that he must inviteanyone needing healing to come forward and ask for prayer. It was a realbattle, but despite much foreboding at the likely reaction of the congregation,he obeyed. The result changed that whole church. second, in a somewhatsimilar situation in a village in papua-New Guinea he was urged by the spiritto pray boldly for a hopelessly sick person. The result was that almost thewhole village came to christ.

•TehvliSry=hb1?nd#n=eL\\vaank='en on£r:ohiTtyw_C_Oiti^s*n±:_+.l._c_h wee Yet _ s tm do\ ng"everything decently and in order" was a recurring theme in all the Bishopls

teaching. To a capacity filled south Baptist church on the first night, thefirst address was "THE HEALINGS OF JESUS - A RESPONSIVE APPROACH"we bring.you some of the main highlights where he emphasised Jesusl people

centred mlniStry and how He sought to draw people out, relating andresponding to each one differently, and then challenging them to take a step infaith.

"Jesus gives us a part in the healing ministry and in all His dealings a four-fold

Pattem can be detected.

Firstly, a part is given to the making of a specific request. Bartimaeus is anexample (Mark 10:46-53) and ,you have not because you ask not, (James 4:2)

secondly, a part is given to faith as of the woman who touched the hem ofJesusl garment (Matt (:21). We must pull the lever of faith but the pressurepoint and focus must always be on Jesus, not on the patient or on us. It is faiththat releases the healing, but it is the Lord who actually heals.

Thirdly, a pail is given to our growth. A responsive approach to God is thehealing process helps us to grow and we are meant to learn from our auccessesand apparent failures.

Fourthly, a part is given to the church in the excercising of joint faith ofpraying together and moving together (Matt 18: 19,20). Tremendous

Page 16: JOURNAL of CHRISTIAN HEALING · 2016-04-17 · patience. Be forbearing with one another and forgiving - you must forgive, as the Lord forgave you. To crown all there must bc. love,

responsibility has been given to the Church. In v18 Jesus says ,M45-ct)er toebind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatever we release on earth shallde reJaased !'ro frcooc7l. I The keys of the Kingdom have been given to the Church(Matt 16:19) and tremendous things can happen but first we must be convincedthat it is the will of God and agree together, then we pray without doubt."

Cia the second night of the theme was "THE BODY OF CHRIST GOES INTOACTION" where amid the fun and enjoyment of the Spirit, the Bishopdescribed his visit to Florence where he saw Michelangelo's famous statue ofDavid. Viewed from a certain angle it dramatically revealed the latent powerand kinetic enerev, of the boy David as he prepared to hurl his slingshot atGoliath. Similarly, there is immense latent power in the Christian Church, but just like Michelangelo's "David" it is all locked up.

The Body of Christ must come alive, but it suffers from various diseases.Firstly/ it often suffers the paralysis of fear. We are just too scared to be theBody of Christ. We are afraid to do a new thing because of what people mightthink. Even the clergy are frightened. What will the Bishop think? And sowe become paralysed by a conformity to the past into the rigidity of old age. This has to be shaken off and excerised out for the Church to become active andstrong again. Secondly, the Body of Christ can become spastic. Like a spasticperson, arms and legs waving around with much energy, certain parts of theChurch can suddenly burst into life, but one part doesn't know what the other isdoing, least of all understand. It is all uncoordinated and unconnected from thehead and with one another. Bad leadership and division allow this tohappen, but good leadership and unity in the Spirit co-ordinate the Body andmake it effective. The Church needs to be an encouraging group of people andthe minisiter needs to be pleased as gifts appear. It is only by excercising themuscles of faith that the Body of Christ will acquire strength and step out infaith to meet the challenges God will put before it. Thirdly the Body of Christcan suffer from a kind of blankness of mind. It simply loses its vision! AtPentecost the disciples were given a magnificent vision:".... first in Jerusalem, then in Samaria, and then unto the ends of the earth!" Churches and parishesmust have renewed vision or the people will perish. Bishop Dowlingemphasises that it was the Church, the people, who must get out and do thework. Only by so doing would the Body be excercised and grow strong again.
