DevelopmentThe world's leading developmental journal

— published twice the number of articles in 1991 than in 1986.

— received three times the number of manuscripts in 1991 thanin 1986.

— offers free colour, 200 free reprints, and has no page charges.

—founded "Development Travelling Fellowships" a schemeto finance collaborative research by young developmentalbiologists.

— has a speed and quality of production second to none, and

. . . should be in your library now!

The aim of DEVELOPMENT is to act as a forum for all research that offers a genuineinsight into mechanisms of development.

Studies on both plant and animal development are welcome and can be focused upon anyaspect of the developmental process, at all levels of biological organization from themolecular and cellular to the tissue levels.

All profits put back into science - the journal is published by a registered charity directed byworking scientists.

Journal of Cell Science check listRevising your manuscriptIn order to make maximum use of our computer system, we ask you to revise your manuscript incorporating both the editor's require-ments based on the referees' reports and the style requirements listed on this sheet. Please send 2 copies of the revised manuscript, thetext and graphics on computer disk and a completed copy of this check list to the editor who is dealing with your paper.

• Type manuscripts, DOUBLE-SPACED THROUGHOUT, inorder Title Page, Summary, Introduction, Materials andMethods, Results, Discussion, References, Figure legends(starting a new page), Tables with titles etc.

• Do not use hyphenation orjustified margins.

• Supply a short title of not more than 40 characters and at least3 key words for indexing.

D Please send disk of corrected text, i.e. after editors andreferees comments have been incorporated.

Preparation of Illustrations

Illustrations must be labelled to a professional standard.

D Create your line drawings to fit within column widths of84 mm, 127 mm or 174 mm. 8 pt Times should be used fortext labelling but ensure that any symbols used are ofsuitable size for clarity. Please supply on disk if possible. Please refer to disk sheet for details. Please try not to useunusual symbols.

• Original photographs are needed for reproduction and shouldbe submitted at final journal size (maximum length 210mm, widths as above).

• Use press-on symbols and letters on photographs (use lowercase letters for labelling features, 14 pt size).

• Each figure grouped in a plate requires a number. Use capital

letters for figure parts.

D Indicate magnification with a bar scale.

• Write author(s) name(s) and figure number on back of each

figure.

Summary

• If references must be cited, include journal name, volumenumber, pages and year, all in parentheses.

• Do not use abbreviations in the summary.

TextD Do not italicize Latin words (e.g., et al., in vitro).• Use SI units only.• Abbreviations should be defined the first time they are used in

text - uppercase should be typed without stops (USA, UK);lowercase with full stops (u.v.).

• Type a space after a digit before a unit e.g., 1 mM (except 1 %,4°C).

• Use relative molecular mass (Mr) and not MW. Mr is dimen-

sionless. kDa is acceptable for molecular mass.

• Use s.e.m. and s.d. for standard errors etc.

• Accession numbers of all sequences should be quoted in yourMS.

• Isotopically labelled compounds - if isotope is of an element

in the compound then place symbol for the isotope insquare brackets, as in pH]thymidine: if compound doesnot normally contain the isotopically labelled element thenuse either 131I-labelled albumin or 13lI-albumin.

• Ions - use Ca2+, etc.

• Check that gene names are in italics (or underlined) but thatprotein product of a gene is in roman type.

• Cite each figure and table in the text in numerical order.

• UseFig.6A,BorFigs7,8.

• Each reference cited in text must be listed in References and

vice versa: please check these carefully.

• Literature citations in text are as follows:

1. One author - Jones (1990) or (Jones, 1990; Smith, 1991).

2. Two authors - Jones and Jackson (1990) or (Jones andJackson, 1990; Smith, 1991).

3. More than two authors - Jones etal. (1990) or (Jones et al.,1990a,b; Smith etal., 1986, 1989).

4. Manuscripts accepted for publication but not yet published- list in References as (in press).

5. Citation of unpublished work

(a) Unpublished observations, including results submittedfor publication, should be cited as such in text only, andnot in reference list.

(b) Personal communications, i.e. the unpublished obser-vations of other scientists, will only be published whensubstantiated by written permission.

References

O Cite references in alphabetical order by first author'ssurname.

• Please put date in parentheses, followed by a full stop.

• "In press" citations must have been accepted for publicationand the name of the journal or publisher included.

• Initials should follow all surnames in the list of authors; inserta full stop and space after each initial; the date in parenthe-sis, followed by a full stop.

• Use USA National Standards Institute abbreviations forJournals (see World List of Scientific Periodicals, 4th edn,1963).

• Use the following style:

Layout and styleManuscripts should be in English, typewritten, double spaced, onone side of the paper, and the pages numbered. Papers should befully ready for press, since revision in proof will not be possible. Theauthor is requested to provide three copies of the typescript andfigures, and should keep a copy. A short title of not more than 40characters, for use as page headings, should be supplied and at least3 key words for indexing papers. A summary must be provided atthe beginning of the text. It should not exceed 500 words.Acknowledgements should be placed before the list of references.

TextUnits(1) Use SI units only.(2) Type a space after a digit, e.g. 1 mM (except 1%, 1°C).(3) Use relative molecular mass (Mr) and not MW. MT is dimension-less. kDa is acceptable for molecular mass.Figure citations - use the abbreviations Fig. or Figs with the figurepart in caps, i.e. Fig. 1A,B or Figs IA, 2B,C.Foreign words - in roman type, e.g. in vivo, in vitro, per se, de novo,et al.Genes and gene products - check that genes and restrictionendonucleases are in italics (or underlined) but that the proteinproduct of a gene is in roman type.Ampersands (&) should be replaced by 'and'.Statistics - use s.e.m. and s.d. for standard errors etc.Abbreviations - uppercase should be typed without full stops (USA,UK); lowercase with full stops (u.v.)Isotopically labelled compounds(1) If isotope is of an element in the compound then place symbolfor the isotope in square brackets, as in [H]thymidine.(2) If compound does not normally contain the isotopically labelledelement then use either l3lI-labelled albumin or l3'l-albumin.Ions - use the form, e.g. Ca2+.

References(1) The list of references must be given in alphabetical order ofauthor's names.(2) The titles of journals should be abbreviated in accordance withthe USA Standards Institute (see World List of Scientific Periodicals,4th edn, 1963).(3) Please put the date in parentheses followed by a full stop, and astop and space after each initial.(4) The following style is used in the reference list:Jones, P., Beck, C. B. and Sid, J. (1991). Cell division in the sea

urchin. Cell 99, 197-223.Rossant, J. (1977). Cell commitment in early rodent development.

In Development m Mammals, vol. 2 (ed. M. H. Johnson), pp.119-150. Amsterdam: North Holland.

(5) Citations in the text should be given as (Jones and Smith, 1960;Brown, 1991) or Jones and Smith (1960). Where there are more

than 2 authors please use the form (Jones et al., 1960) or Jones et al.(I960).(6) Citation of unpublished work.

(a) Unpublished observations, including results submitted forpublication, should be cited as such in the text only, and not inthe reference list.(b) Personal communications, i.e. the unpublished observationsof other scientists, will only be published when substantiated bywritten permission.

Text figures/photographsThese should be numbered in a single series (Fig. 1, Figs 2, 3 etc), in theorder in which they are referred to in the text. Legends for allillustrations should be typed together, separately from the main text.Authors should submit three copies for reviewers. Copies of thephotographic plates must be of suitable standard for reviewers to judgethe quality of the work; photocopies are not acceptable. Original figuresshould be kept by the author until the manuscript has been accepted forpublication.Text figures and photographs ideally should be at final size and occupyeither 1 or 2 columns. The maximum printed size for illustrations is210mmxl68mm for a whole page or 210mmx81mm for a singlecolumn. Labelling should be inserted by the author and should conformto journal style and size. Figure parts should be labelled in upper caseand lettering on the plates should be in lower case. Magnification should .be indicated, where relevant, by a scale line on the illustration. Eachillustration should have the name of the author and the figure numberwritten on the back, together with indication of orientation and anyproposed reduction in size. If line drawings are produced by computer, please supply a file of these on disk together with your text. The editors are always pleased to receive photographs or drawingssuitable for use on the cover of the journal.

TablesPlease submit on separate sheets together with their titles and legends.

Colour platesThese can be reproduced free of charge at the discretion of theeditor. Any charge for excessive use of colour will also be at theeditor's discretion.

Author's disksJournal of Cell Science can use author's word-processor disks forboth text and graphics instead of rekeying accepted articles. Thisincreases both the speed and accuracy of proof production. Withyour letter of provisional acceptance, you will be sent full instruc-tions on formatting and saving your manuscript on disk. Please senda copy of your disk with 2 printed copies of your final revisedmanuscript. Disks will be returned.

ProofsAuthors will receive one set of proofs, which should be correctedand returned to the Editorial Office (a photocopy should be madeand retained by the author). Authors may be required to pay foralterations in proof other than those needed to correct printer'serrors.

ReprintsAuthors will receive 200 reprints free of charge and may orderadditional copies when proofs are returned.

CopyrightIn order to give The Company of Biologists Limited authority todeal with matters of copyright, authors will be required to assign tothem the copyright of any article published in the journal.
