We welcome parents to our Curriculum Night BBQ on Wednesday, September 26 at 5:00 pm for

a meet and greet BBQ in the school yard. This is an excellent opportunity to meet your child’s

teacher, to visit the classroom learning environment and to receive an overview of the curriculum for

barbecuing hotdogs and hamburgers. At this time, parents are invited to visit the teachers in the

BBQ order forms were sent out in a hard copy. If you will be joining us for a BBQ hotdog or

hamburger, please ensure that you fill out the order form and return to the school by Wednesday,

September 19th, 2018.

If you are able to assist with the BBQ, set up or clean up, please let the school office know as soon

as possible or email [email protected]. All volunteers are welcomed and very much

appreciated. This is a great opportunity to meet new parents.

We are asking parents to refrain from parking in the parking lot in the morning as these parking spots are for JCS Staff. Many

parents are parking in the lot and our teachers have absolutely no place to park. The parking lot is for JCS Staff only.

STUDENT ABSENCE and LATENESS - SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAM School Phone Number – 416 393 5413

Parents/Guardians must call and leave a message on the school answering machine. Please include your child’s name, teacher’s name, grade and the reason for absence.

Parents who fail to inform the school of their children’s absence will be contacted as soon as possible, either at home or at work. Extended absences must be accompanied by a note to school indicating the reason.

When a student arrives late for school, he or she must report to the office before going to class. Instructional time begins at 8:30 am, and students will be given late slips if they arrive after this time. Punctuality is an important habit to be developed and practised by every child. The home will be contacted by the school if a child is persistently late.

Students who must leave before dismissal, must be signed out by parent/guardian at the office. Please inform the classroom teacher or school office indicating the time of pickup so that the student is ready and waiting for your arrival, causing very little if any disruption to the classroom and instruction.

On days when the weather is inclement, students are asked to arrive at school just before the bell. Those students present at school will be permitted to enter the building at 8:15am in the morning. On such days, the recess periods will be held indoors. Unless the weather conditions are particularly bad, cold weather alone does not warrant an early entry to the building or indoor recess. Appropriate dress is a requirement on such days.

Students should not return to school following an illness until they are fully recovered. Students should return once

they are able to participate in all school activities, including outdoor recess.

FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS

Parents/guardians are not to congregate in the halls and doorways while waiting for their children. Please wait outside when the weather is nice.

Parents/guardians should meet their children outside the doors, east side of the school, in the pickup yard. Parents are asked to not enter the school yard and/or bus lines to take their child. All students are to be picked up in the pickup yard.

All visitors to the school must report to the office and are required to sign in and sign out at the office.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS and TELEPHONE NUMBERS

Please relay any of the following changes immediately to the school:

address or telephone numbers – cell #’s

business telephone numbers

“emergency” contact person’s information

Medical information

Email address Accidents can and do occur. It is imperative and essential that we are able to contact you. Please provide us

with all up-to-date information.

A MEMO TO ALL PARENTS

As parents and guardians, you are important members of our school family. Consistency between home and school

is a significant part of successful development of positive behaviours, attitudes and compliance. Your support of the

school and its’ policies is imperative. In the home, parents should reinforce the expectations of school, understand

the expectations, policies, and practices discussed in the Agenda and Newsletter. Please refer to the Code of

Conduct in the agenda and discuss these with you child. We need to ensure that parents and the school are in

harmony when responding to various issues.

Good communication is critical to this process. Parents and the school must work closely together if short and long

term success is to be achieved. We hope this outline provides a base of shared support upon which teachers and

parents may build effective mutual understandings and constructive relationships.

SAFETY

The safety of our children must always be of the utmost concern. Every effort is made to make our school safe,

comfortable, secure and free from violence, racism and harassment. BUS, BICYCLE, CLASSROOM, FIRE,

PRESONAL, PLAY, ROAD/RAIL and TRIP SAFETY are part of the curriculum in the school. Officials from the

community visit the school, and present and reinforce this important information to our students. We value and

strongly encourage your support in this area, and ask that you regularly review all aspects of safety with your child.

BUSSING!!!

Eighty percent of our students are bussed to school and back home. It is crucial that all of our students arrive to school and home safely. Students are greeted by a supervising teacher in the morning. All students meet in the school yard at the end of the day, stand in their bus lines in a particular order, and then they are escorted to their bus by a teacher. Students are strongly reminded to ensure that they are out at the bell and proceed directly to their bus lines. Chatting in the hallways or outside, and playing in the bus lines increases the chances that your son or daughter will miss the bus due to inattentiveness. Busses will not return to school if your child has missed the bus.

It is imperative that if you pick up your child/children, please inform the office and/or the staff member on bus duty. We need to ensure that ALL children are accounted for and on the bus. Safety is paramount.

In addition, if you are parked on the north side of West Deane, please walk across the street and pick up your child from the school pickup yard. Students will not be allowed to walk or run across the street unescorted. Please take a few extra minutes to greet your child in the school yard, inform the teacher that you are taking your child, and proceed safely to your car. We ask you for your assistance and cooperation in this matter.

The bus company the drives our students daily is Switzer Carty Transportation, and can be reached at – 905 361 1084. Please ensure that you know the bus route number of your child’s bus so that prompt attention may be given.

Families are encouraged to sign up on the transportation portal as it will help you to communicate and keep you

updated on service related issues. The transportation portal may be located at

https://www.torontoschoolbus.org/transportation-portal

Excursions

Excursions which complement and enrich the classroom portion of your children’s education program are

encouraged at Josyf Cardinal Slipyj. They are carefully planned excursions that provide an

opportunity to expand student programs beyond the classroom. Teachers must follow

specific procedures and guidelines when planning field trips and excursions. Your child is

expected to participate in all of these ventures.

Student Safety and Expectations on the bus

Observe the instructions of the bus driver at all times.

Remain seated and facing the front at all times until the bus comes to a complete stop.

Respect others’ property and do not cause damage to the bus in any way.

Do not talk loudly, yell, throw objects or fight on the bus as this distracts the bus driver and may cause injury to yourself and other students.

Keep your hands and head inside the bus, do not lean out the window, spit or throw objects out the window.

Eating and drinking is not allowed on the bus.

Show respect to the bus driver and fellow passengers at all time

ELECTRONIC DEVICES and CELL PHONES

We continue to encourage students to leave IPods, MP3 players, digital games or toys, cameras, cell phones, other

electronic devices and other personal belongings of value at home. If your child brings a cell phone to and from

school, it MUST be turned off while on school property and remain out of sight everywhere on school property

including classrooms, the washroom, the parking lot and schoolyard. Matters of urgency are to be dealt with through

the office. If your child needs to contact you, they are to seek permission to use the school phone. In addition, the

school will not be responsible for lost or stolen phones. Please read the school agenda for more details and

consequences on the misuse of PED’s.

SURF-RIGHT (On-line rules and etiquette)

In addition to other areas of programming, students are required to become familiar with electronic communication

systems (computers/laptops). Teachers and staff will instruct students about the specific rules for the use of the

Internet. Students are expected to support the rules that are clearly established by staff and the rules to TCDSB’s

“Acceptable Use Policy”. The signed Internet Agreement Form must be returned to the school. This form was sent

home last week. Please read it over with your child, sign it, and return the form back to the classroom teacher.

SCHOOL UNIFORM- Appropriate Dress Code

The TCDSB implemented an Appropriate Dress Code in all of its elementary schools in

September 2011. This year, September 2018, all students will be required to conform to

the TCDSB Uniform Policy. Students from JK to Grade 8 are expected to comply with the

policy. The Appropriate Dress Code consists of any combination of solid white or solid navy

top with Navy blue bottoms. Absolutely no denim and no jeggings, no stripes, no logos, and absolutely no

black/grey track pants). The boys at JCS have a habit of trying to sneak in black bottoms. We ask that parents

please monitor this carefully at home. Please remember that shirts with inappropriate comments or graphics and/or

any type of tank or halter tops are NOT allowed. Make-up is not allowed for any student, and for safety reasons,

hoop earrings are not to be worn.

SHOULD YOUR CHILD REQUIRE RECURRING REMINDERS HE/SHE WILL BE ASKED TO CALL HOME AND

HAVE APPROPRIATE WEAR BROUGHT TO SCHOOL BY PARENT.

Uniforms may be purchased at Old Navy, Gap Kids, SEARS, Carters and Walmart, not to mention a few. The JCS

CSPC also has a used uniform sale throughout the school year where parents are able to purchase additional

uniform apparel.

Medication

Principals, teachers and support staff of the TCDSB are not permitted to administer any type of prescription

medication during the school day, unless they have written authorization signed by you, the parent, and the

prescribing physician. The forms to dispense any medication must be updated yearly and on a regular basis; these

are available from the school office (SS 11,12,13). Please be advised that staff in TCDSB schools will not

dispense non-prescription medications to students.

Page 8: Josyf Cardinal Slipyj Catholic School September Newsletter · Їхній внесок та посвята школі є надзвичайними. Сподіваємось на ще

Should you require additional information or have any questions about this protocol, please contact the school

Principal or the Special Services Department at the CEC. Your co-operation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Immunization

All students are required by law to be immunized. Failure to provide proof of immunization could

result in suspension of a student by the Medical Officer of Health. Please ensure that your child’s

immunization is up to date.

Anaphylaxis

As we begin a new school year, we would like to inform you that Josyf Cardinal Slipyj is an allergen aware school.

There are children in attendance who suffer from severe and life threatening allergens to certain foods, such as

egg, shell fish, peanut and nut products (among other food and/or non-food products).

Anaphylaxis is a severe and life threatening allergic reaction, and exposure to the smallest quantities of these

products can be life threatening. The most common allergen triggers are food, insect stings, medications, exercise

and latex. An anaphylaxis reaction involves symptoms from two or more body systems. We at Josyf Cardinal Slipyj

School would appreciate the co-operation of the entire school community in NOT sending any lunches or snacks that

contain peanuts or nuts, egg, which could potentially harm a child. Other restrictions may apply on a class by class

basis. Please make sure that all of your children’s caregivers are aware of the food restrictions. Please do not send

food for birthdays or special occasions, including timbits, lollipops, muffins, doughnuts, cookies, pizza, etc. Any

edible treats will be sent back home with the student. There are many alternatives such as stickers, pencils, bubbles,

crayons, pencil crayons, play dough, colouring books, legos, note pads, etc., that can be purchased at the dollar

store. If you have any questions, please talk to your child’s teacher or the school staff. We look forward to your co-

operation in making this a safe year for all our students.

All Medical forms will be distributed to students on Monday, September 17, 2018. Students with allergies are to

wear their epi pens on them at all times, in a fanny pack. The second epi pen will be placed in the school office.

Thank You for your cooperation in this matter. Safety is first and paramount for all JCS students.

Emergency Closing of School

The school may be closed or classes may be cancelled for a temporary period in the case of an emergency arising

from inclement weather, fire, breakdown of heating plant, the failure of an essential utility or similar emergency when

the health, welfare or safety of children are in jeopardy. In such case the school staff will endeavour to contact the

parent or guardian to ensure that the child is picked up. In cases where adequate supervision can be ensured, the

children will remain in the care of the Principal and staff until the parents can assume responsibility for their children.

We also encourage parents to monitor the TCDSB Website, radio stations, emails, TV stations, etc., where

information is disseminated concerning school closures and/or emergencies.

HOMEWORK

Homework in moderation can be beneficial to the children in many ways. It can help children to:

develop a sense of responsibility

teach organization

Page 9: Josyf Cardinal Slipyj Catholic School September Newsletter · Їхній внесок та посвята школі є надзвичайними. Сподіваємось на ще

provide practice of skills

complete work begun in school

pursue personal interests through projects related to subjects studied in class

as per grade guidelines, certain minutes are allocated to the different grades Homework can also provide communication between parent and child enabling you to know what your child is being

taught in school. You can aid you child through your interest and by ensuring a quiet time and place for homework

to be done.

TYPES OF HOMEWORK

1. Work assigned by the teacher to be done for the next day. 2. Longer term assignments, e.g., memory work, projects, study for summative tests. 3. Review of class work. 4. Unfinished and incomplete class assignments 5. Library books for pleasure reading.

Parents are encouraged to check their children’s homework and agenda daily.

VIRTUE FOR THE MONTH – Hospitality

As we welcome our students back to school in September it seems fitting that this month’s

virtue is HOSPITALITY. Our teachers have been busy preparing their classrooms, gathering

together resources, supplies and putting up bulletin boards that will invite the students back

into a welcoming environment. But hospitality is more than just a welcoming back. It is giving

more of ourselves.

In our school community and in our homes, we can discuss the concept of the least of our

people or the stranger who needs our hospitality, be it the newly arrived to Canada or the

new student at our school. Today hospitality is more important than ever and it is only

through a deep moral obligation to hospitality that we transform our communities.

We need to remember that God welcomes us all to his table and we should do the same. If

you want to feel welcomed, make sure you are welcoming others.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Sept. 25 - CSPC Annual General Meeting (AGM)/Elections/First Meeting at 7:00pm in the

school library.

New Trustee Ward Boundaries for 2018 Municipal Election The Toronto Catholic District School Board at a Special Board Meeting on August 8, 2018 approved the

establishment of new Trustee Ward boundaries for the upcoming Municipal Elections on October 22, 2018. This

was done to comply with new legislation passed by the Government of Ontario to reduce the number of Toronto City

Council seats from 47 to 25 by aligning ward boundaries with current provincial and federal ridings which included

a directive to redistribute TCDSB Trustee Ward boundaries. Existing Trustee Wards, including the local Catholic

schools they represent, remain unchanged and the new boundaries DO NOT come into effect until December 1,

2018. For a map of the new boundaries visit:

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year as we launch our new pastoral plan: “Rooted

in Christ: we Belong, we Believe, we Become”

Inspired by St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians: “Live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and

established in the faith..abounding in thanksgiving.”

During the first year of the plan, we focus in depth on the concept of belonging. Students and staff are invited to

explore how “we Belong” to our school community (or place of work), to our family, to our parish and to our

world. We are also invited to consider what we can do to ensure that everyone around us feels a sense of

belonging—our students, our parent communities, our staff, our pastors and other members of our local parishes.

Throughout the year, share your stories on Instagram and twitter using the hashtag #TCDSBweBelong

Open Houses Students in grade 8 and their families are reminded that TCDSB secondary schools are hosting open houses this
