Joshua Uzoigwe studied music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. He later did post‑graduate work in ethnomusicology with John Blacking at the Queen's University of Belfast, from where he received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees.

ethnomusicology on creativity. The piano writing in the first of his Four Igbo Songs for voice and piano clearly demonstrates the concept of African pianism. The piano is made to 'behave' like an African instrument and the piano part sounds as if it were a transcription of an African instrumental part rather than a through‑composed part.

Uzoigwe's study of Akin Euba’s work (Uzoigwe 1992) represents a new dimension in the practice of ethnomusicology and is an important contribution to the knowledge of neo‑African art music.
