DESCRIPTIONJoshua leaves Israel with a strong warning and challenge to love and serve the True and Living God.
- 1. We closed withJoshua's challengeto the people: 14Now therefore fearthe Lord , and serve Him insincerityand intruth : and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.15And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord,choose youthis day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served thatwereonthe other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell:but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord .
2. 16And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods;17For the Lord our God, Heit isthat brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt,from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:18And the Lord drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land:thereforewill we also serve the Lord; for Heisour God. 3. The people made astrong commitmenttoservethe Lord andneverto forsake Him. TheyconfessedGod's Goodness and Mercy unto them very specifically. Wewillserve the Lord, forHe isour God . 4. We must be strong and of good courage toendurethe trials of life, 7. 19And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannotserve the Lord: for Heisan holy God; Heisa jealous God; He will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.Joshua wasnot satisfiedwith theirquickandeasyresponse. 8. Theytalkeda good talk, butdidnothing to show a good intent. They probablythoughtthey meant itat the time, but Joshua knewtheir history . He gave a strong warning ! 20If ye forsake the Lord, and serve strange gods, then He will turn and do you hurt,and consume you, after that He hath done yougood. 9. We must neverlightly makeacommitmentto the Lord. To say welove Himand thendeny Him with the way we live Is afoolishthing. Andprove itwith our living. 10. 21And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the Lord.22And Joshua said unto the people, Yearewitnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the Lord, to serve him. And they said,We arewitnesses.23Now therefore put away,said he , the strange gods whichareamong you, and incline your heart unto the Lord God of Israel.He knew they had strange gods hiddenamong their possessions. Put them away! 11. 24And the people said unto Joshua, The Lord our God will we serve, and His voice will we obey.25So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.26And Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, thatwasby the sanctuary of the Lord. 12. 27And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be awitness unto us ; for it hath heard all the Words of the Lord which He spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.28So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.Hedid allthat a man could do Toimpressupon them theimportanceof what they were saying, and Toinsuretheir sincerity. 13. 29And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died,being an hundred and ten years old .30And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, whichisin mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.Everybody who lives long enoughgets old ,and everybodydies . It's nothing todread , nothing tofear for those wholovethe Lord andserve Him . 14. 31And Israel served the Lord all the days ofJoshua , and all the days of theeldersthatoverlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the Lord, that He had done for Israel. 15. 32And thebones of Joseph , which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground whichJacob boughtof the sons of Hamor the father ofShechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.33And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in a hillthat pertained toPhinehas his son, which was given him in mount Ephraim. 16. Gradually, all theolder leadersdied. All who hadseenthe miracles of God died. All who remembered thechastisinghand of God when the people sinned -- died. Judges 176In those daysthere wasno king in Israel,butevery man didthat which wasright in his own eyes. A new era would follow: 17. 1 Corinthians 111Be ye followers of me, even as I alsoamof Christ. Philippians 49Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
