CONGRATULATIONS TO KIM HARTJE ON WINNING THE FREE STORM SHELTER DRAWING!

On May 22, 2011 with winds in excess of 200 miles per hour, on the ground for 22.1 miles and lasting an estimated 38 minutes from start to finish, our city of Joplin Missouri was devastated by an E-F 5 tornado. Over 160 lives were lost

that day and thousands were injured.

The memory of our loss was a deciding factor in President/CEO Christi Morehouse’s decision to give back to the com-munity when Carl Junction, MO was hit with an E-F3 tornado on the eighth anniversary , May 22 2019, of Joplin’s

tornado.

“I was on vacation In Mississippi when the Carl Junction tornado occurred, being away from family and friends and

having no idea if this was going to be a repeat of 2011 was heart wrenching.

I think after 2011 several people did get a storm shelter, many others may not have because of cost. And when things have been calm for a few years you may not think of investing in a storm shelter. Then it does happen again and on the anniversary of the Joplin tornado!. Even though the destruction wasn’t of the same magnitude as Joplin experi-

enced, still people suffered a great loss to their homes and personal belongings.

I called my management team and told them to run a storm shelter promotion and once I got home from Mississippi I started thinking how our community always comes together and provides help, be it volunteering for clean up, donat-ing supplies and food. At Joplin Metro Credit Union we are always looking to help where needed and I felt that the need for food and supplies was already being met by so many. That’s when the idea of giving away a storm shelter began to form. I went to my Board of Directors, got their approval, talked with Atlas Safe Rooms and everything kind of fell into

place.

So many times we are donating money, or buying things that are possibly already being given by so many others and I wanted JMCU to provide something that would keep a

family safe should this happen again.”

Although we are an employee based credit union and have been since 1950 JMCU felt like it was important to open the drawing to everyone in the community within a 50 mile radius of Joplin, Mo. We had over 350 entries in a month’s time and were very excited for

the live Facebook drawing that we did on August 1, 2019.

Even more excited was our winner Kim Hartje!

We will be Celebrating 70 Years in 2020 at our Annual Meeting!

If you have never been to one of our annual meetings plan to attend this special milestone with our credit union!

Watch for more details!

During the month of August our employees paid to dress down to raise money for the Joplin Humane

Society.

We were able to raise $560 and with that money we sponsored adoption fees for 6 dogs and 2 cats.

TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN TO SAVE Six Ways To Teach Your Kids About Saving Money

Excerpt from Windgate Wealth Management

Start with a piggy bank A piggy bank can be a great way to teach your kids the importance of saving from

a young age, while giving them an easy way to do it. Tell your kids that the goal is to fill up the piggy bank

with dollars and coins, until there is no room.

Open up a bank account Once the piggy bank is full, take your child to the bank or credit union to open a

savings account for them. Here at JMCU we offer a Little Savers account for ages 0-14 with a minimum

deposit of $10 membership share which has to stay in the account at all times. We also have a FYI—

Future Young Investors account for ages 15 to 17. A minimum deposit of $25 membership share is re-

quired. Checking accounts/debit cards/ATM cards are available for this age group upon approval.

Use savings jars –When your kids really want the latest and greatest toy, let them know they have to save

up for it. Give them a jar for each of their desired purchases and offer them a small allowance each week

in a denomination that encourages savings. For example, if you give your child five dollars a week, give it

to them in one dollar bills. They can save all their cash for one purchase, or they can contribute to differ-

ent “jars” for various savings goals. To encourage saving up for the short term goals, put a picture of their

desired toy or item on the jar.

Create a timeline - As a kid, the concepts of money can be hard to grasp. One way to create money les-

sons ongoing is to create a timeline so that your child can visualize when they will reach their goal.

Lead by example - Children learn by example, so the best way to teach your child about saving money is

to save money yourself. Have your own jar of money that you put funds in regularly.

Start a conversation - One of the most important things you can do is start a conversation about money

and the importance of saving. Let your children know they can have an allowance, but it’s up to them to

save up for things they really want.

Teaching kids how to save money may seem like a tough task. It has even been said that parents are

more likely to talk to their children about sex than about money. But using these tips, you can make your

child’s understanding of money fun and accessible. It’s an investment in knowledge which truly pays the

best interest.

Have a very Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year!
