I’M THINKING...AS ONE

During the Olympics in Brazil, I stumbled upon the rowingevents. I was amazed at how straight and smooth the competi-tors guided the boats through the water. I was particularly im-pressed with the teams of eight. They moved through the waterwith such efficiency and effectiveness. How does any numberof people stay upright in what amounts to an oversized kayak, let alone generate forward momentum at any velocity of note?!In 1998, I made my first trip to the Algonquin Provincial Park

in Canada for a church wilderness trip. During that trip, wespent a lot of time in canoes, paddling large distances. Our ca-noes carried two to three people. Canoes were capsized nu-merous times throughout the week as participants tried toadjust their weight to balance the boat. On one occasion, aclose friend of mine had his finger crushed between anotherperson’s paddle and the side of the canoe because their strokeswere not coordinated. Very rarely did a canoe travel in astraight line from point A to point B. It was, without question,an amazing trip, and we did eventually figure out how to worktogether to get where we needed to go without hurting one an-other, but there was not a functional team of two in the wholegroup of ten that participated. There are several differences between Olympic athletes and a

random collection of high school seniors. But why were theyable to move with such ease while we seemed to have to fightfor every inch? As I watched them row, the answer becameclear as I listened to the voice of the person calling out direc-tions from the front of the boat. The eight rowers were movingin one direction with one purpose to the sound of one voice. My friends and I were attempting to move in one direction andwe shared the same purpose, but there were as many voices asthere were people in the canoe.

The church is much like one of those boats. Each of us has apaddle or set of oars in hand and we are trying to propel ourboat through the water. Our direction is into the future andinto the world1. Our purpose is to be the body of Christ in theworld2 as we love God with all of our being and our neighborsas ourselves3. And, the voice that should be keeping us togetherand guiding us forward is the voice of the Lord through HisHoly Spirit4 and His Word5.

How does our church look moving across the water? Are wezigging and zagging our way along as different voices fight to beheard to pursue different purposes in different directions? Or,are all of us together listening to the voice of the Lord, movingin the direction He is calling us, for His purpose and glory? Myhope and prayer is that as we continue to listen to the voice ofGod together, that we will find greater unity and effectiveness;and, that much like a team of Olympic rowers, we will moveinto the future God has for us as ONE.
