“Our members are Connecticut’s Jewels among Women”

Happy Fall! Summer is a memory and we are all well into the much

busier pace of our normal lives.

In September, Debi, Ronnie, and I attended the 35th Anniversary

celebration of the Wolcott Juniorettes. The list of the projects the girls

have done over the years is at least a mile long and truly awe

inspiring. Congratulations to them and their mother club!

Our September 15th CJW Meeting/Workshops/Conference in West Haven was great! We got

through the business quickly, had a wonderful breakfast, catered by my friend Cindy, from

Cindyrella's Catering, shared a lot of wisdom and great ideas about recruiting and retaining

members, and instead of breaking out for workshops, did them all for the whole group. We filled a

van with cleaning supplies and paper goods for our LTA, Female Soldiers: Forgotten Heroes and got

to see photos of the home.

I am looking forward to our October 24th Meeting/Workshops/Conference in Enfield. I know that it

will be just as wonderful. It will be held at the Shaker Pines Fire Station from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00

p.m. You should have received the call by the time you are reading this newsletter. If you haven't,

please contact Corresponding Secretary, Amy Neves.

The one thing we didn't do at the September meeting was to hand out the revised Bluebook. We've

been hard at work on a major overhaul of the book and are still refining it. We also realized, that if

we waited until after the October meeting, we could include the revised By-laws, instead of

distributing the book with old By-laws. At the September meeting, those clubs in attendance voted

to accept the revisions as presented. At the October meeting, any clubs who have not already voted,

will have the opportunity to do so. Then, after the revisions have been accepted, we can insert the

new By-laws into the Bluebook, so that what you receive will be current. Once all of the revisions

are complete, the Bluebook will be emailed to each club and placed on our website. Any clubs that

need the book on a flash drive will be able to request one from Corresponding Secretary Amy

Neves. Amy is working very hard to make the Bluebook more user friendly and concise. I know

you all will be impressed with the final outcome.

One more idea for getting involved with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts is to find out if any Boy Scouts

are working on earning their Eagle Rank or Senior Girl Scouts are working on earning their Gold

Award. These are the highest honors that the youths can attain and both involve completing projects

that benefit their communities. Your club might be able to offer its services or funding to help with

the projects.

Don't forget to invite Debi and me to visit your meetings. We will already be visiting Wolcott for a

second time, for the Juniors' International Dinner. If the rest of you don't invite us soon, we will

start inviting ourselves to your meetings.

Enjoy the Fall weather and the jewel tones of the turning leaves!

Kathy

Happy Autumn,

By now most clubs have had their first meeting and are well on the way to planning and holding

events. As you pass around the sign-up sheets are you thinking, if only we had a few more members

to help, we could make a bigger impact? Now is the time to try to recruit new members and to

retain the ones you have. Make a meeting a social event where every member is asked to bring a

guest. Show the perspective members just how much fun you have together as well as the

wonderful work you can accomplish. It’s a great time to show your current members how much you

appreciate them too.

Put your club out there…take a picture of the group at an event or an a meeting and write just a

small tag line with who you are, when you meet and where. Then send it off to your local

newspaper. Be sure to hand out a brochure to the crowds at your events. Publicity is the best way

to let others know you are there,

I am trying to set up a teleconference with the District Advisors for the beginning of November. If

you are a District Advisor please send me your phone number and the best time to call. I want to

call each Advisor prior to the teleconference. Remember that Kathy and I are waiting to be invited

to visit your clubs….before we just invite ourselves.

Thank you to all the members who joined us at the Fall workshop in West Haven. Looking forward

to meeting more members at the Fall workshop in Enfield in October.

In Junior Spirit,

Debi Puzia

“Juniors make a difference in the lives of others”

Hello to all....No matter if you are a new officer or committee chair in you club, or one serving another term. We welcome you. If you are a new officer/committee chair, you should have received some important info from the person that held the office before you. Talk to that person, she is a wealth of information and can help you with any questions you may have. If that is not possible, Please feel free to call any CJW Board of Director member. If she can't help you she will direct you to some one who can.

Two years ago, every club received a CD of the CJW Blue Book (2010-2012) which is full of information on officers and committees duties, important names and contact info, how to run a meeting, information on resources and much more. For the time being it will be a good source of info. Soon all clubs will be receiving a new 2012-2014 Blue Book CD. Please the President of the club should be sharing this with all club members. There is a lot of changes that will be very helpful to the whole club no matter if you are a officer, committee chair or a new or old member. Also

make sure that your club has up dated any club info to the Corresponding Secretary. This info is valuable so that you will receive emails on events and you get the CJW Monthly Bulletin, this is another tool to be shared with club members.

Your club may wonder, “What is the advantage of being part of CJW?” We have great recourses and networking information, group insurance rates, under CJW 501c3 status, CJW Connection, many years of goodwill in the community, donations as a group are substantial. I guess what I am saying is we are stronger as a group then if we stand alone.

RECORDING SECRETARY

Wendy Gamba, 175 Lowin Ave., Westville, CT 06515, [email protected], 203-859-5729

Since my submission to the newsletter is not meeting minutes, I have been at a loss for what to write about. Last month was easy; All I had to do was introduce myself. So, what else do you do when you don't know where to start? Google it! I Googled “Recording Secretary” to see if there was any interesting factoids I could find about the

position. While the search netted many, many hits, there was absolutely nothing noteworthy. There were about a zillion position descriptions that all basically said the same thing...take meeting notes. I did learn that there is a service you can hire if you are in need of recording secretary skills and they have an entire site dedicated to why you would need a recording secretary, what they do {take meeting notes} and how you too can make this your career. Interesting, but not really. There were a number of references to Roberts Rules of Order, but, as best I can tell, that subject falls either under Leadership or Parliamentarian. Next I thought that perhaps there have been some famous recording secretaries...nope, at least nobody I have ever heard of. I guess that this position {taking meeting notes} isn't one which people keep on their resume after they have moved on to bigger and better things. With that, I have expended all the creativity I have for this month’s article. Here you have it, a Seinfeld article - an article about nothing. Now I have a little more than 30 days to worry about what I will write about next....

Thank you, Wendy G. Gamba

Perhaps later, have coffee and @ either a public place or member’s home. In these busy times, we forget to have some fun with our volunteer “sisters”.

October is Arts Month; be sure to look @ the leaves picturesque array of colors making a beautiful scene during this season of the year.

Maybe venture to an Art Exhibit or Museum to gasp their beauty.

Education:

During the month of October, plan a Teachers’ Appreciation Day with apples, muffins, and cookies. You could make a basket (or just use one item) for all their hard work. Also, don’t forget the new teachers with a welcome letter. It would be quite a surprise to both.

Concentrate on education knowledge within your community. You’d be surprised on what you may learn!

We would like to wish you a Happy & Safe Halloween @ this time.

Down Syndrome Awareness

WHAT IS DOWN SYNDROME?

In every cell in the human body there is a nucleus, where genetic material is stored in genes. Genes carry the codes responsible for all of our inherited traits and are grouped along rod-like structures called chromosomes. Typically, the nucleus of each cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, half of which are inherited from each parent. Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of

chromosome 21.

This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome. A few of the common physical traits of Down syndrome are low muscle tone, small stature, an upward slant to the eyes, and a single deep crease across the center of the palm - although each person with Down syndrome is a unique individual and may possess these characteristics to different degrees, or not at all.

HOW COMMON IS DOWN SYNDROME?

One in every 691 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, making Down syndrome the most common genetic condition. Approximately 400,000 Americans have Down syndrome and about 6,000 babies with Down syndrome are born in the United States each year.

Happy Autumn,

The Juniorette Advisors, Juniorette Coordinator and the Director held a teleconference on Sept. 13. Many of the clubs participated. It was a great success for all of us. Questions were answered and many asked…all in the comfort of our own home. I hope to do another one in November, and include the club Presidents. In November we will also be creating a children’s play area at the FS:FH home in Bridgeport as well as prepare a Sunday dinner to enjoy with them.

Please send me an email with activities that your club will be doing so that I can report it in the newsletter. Also, a reminder that club contact information is still needed to update our files. Send contact information for Advisors and officers.

CJW’s September workshop was held on September 15th at St. John Vianney in West Haven. Everyone in attendance really appreciated the PowerPoint presentation that Amanda Teti, Development Director for Homes for the Brave, gave for FS:FH. Amanda will be giving her presentation again at the October 24th meeting in Enfield. She spoke to us about CJW’s main focus as a sponsor is to publicize the availability of the home for the female soldiers. She also reminded us that their residency is in constant transiency, so there is always a

need for welcome & going home supplies. Each female soldier is expected to gain their life skills and be out on their own within 2 years. She distributed more tear off sheets that we can post in grocery stores, libraries, physician’s offices, etc. to help get the word out to the homeless female soldiers. We were very excited to hear that there are 12 adult residents living in the home at the current time. We are also happy to announce that district advisors will act as collection drop off points & Amanda will commission a van to pick them up periodically. As a courtesy, please contact your advisor to make arrangements for dropping off any items your club is donating.

Amanda is available to give presentations or speak at club functions if you would like her to attend one of your meetings. She may also be able to bring a soldier to speak as well depending on the date and time. She has also offered to give tours of the home to our club members. Please remember you need to contact us to coordinate the date you wish her to speak or arrange a tour.

Our wish list for November & December consists of Christmas stockings and personalized gifts for each resident. A club may select to fill a stocking or buy a gift with a maximum amount spent of $50. The stockings may contain items such as hair brushes, combs, socks, toiletries, books or any small item you think a resident would like to have. If your club is interested with participating in this project please let us know by November 2nd so we can assign your club a resident with her sizes & specific needs. These gifts will need to be delivered to your District Advisor by 12/1. By the first of the year we will have a monthly collection list so that we give the residents a variety of what they need. We would like to thank Donna and Dogwood district for coming up with a great district project and a holiday idea for the FS:FH home. These clubs will be making wreaths for the home. What a fabulous way to perk up the holidays for these women.

So far we have heard from Orange, Litchfield, Wolcott and Trumbull with their LTA contact information. We know there are more clubs that have shown a great interest in this project and hope to receive more contact details so we can keep all clubs updated. Please contact us for any information you need and possibly schedule a date for us to visit your club. We really like giving the personal touch with keeping our clubs informed and updated with current events or needs for FS:FH.

We thank you for all you do and have done.

Volunteers throughout the state gathered in May for the Connecticut Junior Women’s (CJW)

Spring Conference to celebrate the donation of nearly $400,000 in monetary donations, scholarships

and non-monetary donations. This total represents donations by 45 Junior Women’s Clubs to their

local, state, national and international communities during 2011-2012.

Tolland Junior Women (TJW) received numerous awards for their community service projects

and charitable donations. They received the Helping Hands Award, given in recognition of the

Home Life project that had the most impact on the community, for their June 2011 donation of

$10,000 to Adam’s Adventure toward a community playground for children of all abilities. An

additional $4000 was given in 2012, bringing their 2-year donation to Adam’s Adventure to

$14,000, raised through the jointly sponsored Tolland Spring Teezer golf tournament. This plaque

will hang in Town Hall during the coming year.

TJW also earned the Overall Department Award for Medium Clubs in the following departments:

Health, Leadership, Membership, and State Project (for its support of Covenant to Care for Children,

the 2008-2012 CJW Long-term Affiliation.)

Division Awards were also received within the following departments: Arts (Creative Arts),

Conservation (Resource Preservation), Current Affairs (Local and International Divisions),

Education (Community Education), and Home Life (Community Living and Youth Divisions).

At the conference, TJW donated to Covenant to Care two diaper bags filled with clothing, food,

diapers and essential items to support the emergency placement of an infant. They also presented a

final cash donation to CCC. Starting in September the club will begin its support of the newly

selected CJW Long-term Affiliation for 2012-2018, Female Soldiers: Forgotten Heroes, a project of

Homes for the Brave.

New CJW Officers were also installed at Spring Conference. Kathy Znosko will serve as CJW

Director for 2012-14, and TJW club member, Deb Puzia, is the new Assistant Director of the state

organization. Deb will also continue her role as statewide Juniorette Coordinator, guiding young

women age 9-18 volunteering through CJW, a position she has held since 2010.

During 2012-2013 Tolland Junior Women will be transitioning to a new name, Tolland

Community Women. The name change reflects the club’s goal of maintaining a balance between

camaraderie and involvement in the community.

The presidents of Dogwood District met on August 30th and shared thoughts, ideas, and events plans for the upcoming CJW year. It was so nice being able to put names to faces and hear how we all have similar challenges within our clubs. We also shared our successes and some ideas to try in the future. It was a very productive evening of chatting. One idea we are going to pursue is the possibility of having a district day of building at a Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build house. Marlene from Fairfield will be looking into this for us and, though things are still very much in the planning stages, it is a project that we all felt could be exciting.

Just over two weeks later we all met up again at the Sept. 15th CJW meeting and shared a table and discussed our clubs some more. After listening to Amanda speak on our LTA we decided as a group we would like to take on a District project of helping to decorate the house with wreaths for the holidays. Each club will prepare a wreath and these can be hung on doors throughout the house. More details will be coming on this soon.

Club highlights for this month:

The Junior Women’s Club of Milford will be having a Night at the Races on Saturday, November 3rd and Breakfast with Santa at the Orange Ale House on Saturday, December 8th .

Shoreline Community Women welcomed 4 guests/potential new members to their Welcome Back meeting in September. The theme for the potluck dinner was “Italian Night” and everyone had a great time renewing acquaintances and eating some excellent food. With Clinton’s 350th anniversary scheduled to be celebrated during 2013 the club is trying to decide how to tweak their projects to join in the celebration. Members of the club attended a meeting of the 350th planning committee. To start, at the October meeting a speaker from the Historical Society will discuss the history of Clinton. The October meeting is being held on Thursday, October 18th so members would be able to attend a benefit for the local library featuring Gina Barecca on their regular meeting night.

Get out your umbrellas and galoshes; it’s time for the Durham Fair! Durham Women’s Club and Middlefield Jr. Women will both have booths at the fair as major fund raisers.

I would like to start off by wishing everyone a happy fall. I love this time of year, the leaves are at their most beautiful stage of color, the air is crisp and Juniors is off and running with great ideas. The Wildbury District has many fun and exciting events that they would like to invite you to in the upcoming month of October.

The Junior Woman’s Club of Watertown is holding a pasta fundraiser by Fun Pasta

Fundraising. The fundraiser consists of fun shaped pastas and soups, which people could purchase for $6.50 and $7.50. If you would like to purchase any pasta to make any day of the week or holiday extra special, you could contact Cara Rinaldi via phone or email. They are also joining in the save lids to save lives campaign by Yoplait yogurt. For every pink lid you send in by December 31, 2010, Yoplait will donate 10 cents to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. When you eat a pink lid Yoplait yogurt please save the lid and send it to Cara Rinaldi.

As the Wildbury District Representative I would like to get to know each of you a little better, so why not have a social gathering in the near future. Since fall is my favorite time of the year and it seems to be the best, since it’s the beginning of our club year, let’s do a meet and greet in October. We can get together as members and discuss all of the exciting things happening in your club.

I would like to remind all of the Wildbury District clubs that I am always available by email, phone or snail mail if you have any questions or concerns. Please feel free to contact me with any upcoming events and news about your club, so we can all stay informed.

THIS AND THAT

Here’s your chance to share something with everyone. Send in your recipes, interesting articles, photos, quotes, book or movie reviews, restaurant reviews…

At the end of August one of my co-workers went on vacation and gave me her share of a Community Garden for the week that she was gone. Along with eggplants, tomatoes, bok choy and some other greens I became the owner of a sack of very firm Bartlett pears. My first inclination was to share the bounty with the rest of the people in my office and my second was to ask my brother for some ideas on how to use so many pears (he’s the owner/chef of a lodge in New Zealand that prides itself on using locally grown produce and meats). James responded with a recipe for Belgian Pears that called for just 2 kilo (4.4lbs) of pears, 500 grams (2 cups) white sugar, and 150 ml (1/2 cup) white vinegar. The sack of pears weighed just about 4.5 lbs. so I collected the pears that I’d given away and spent the better part of the next day making my first batch of Belgian Pears. They turned out to be so good that I am now making another batch to have on hand through the winter since I gave jars from the first batch to my co-workers for being and Indian giver. Here’s the recipe:

2 kilos of pears (4.4 lbs.)

500g of white granulated sugar (about 2 cups)

150 ml white vinegar (most measuring cups have liters as well as cups)

Wash and peel the pears leaving the stems intact.

Melt the sugar and vinegar in a large, heavy bottom saucepan with tight fitting lid.

Add the pears and simmer gently with a tight fitting lid for 3 hours.

Remove the lid and continue simmering, uncovered for 3 more hours.

Put pears and juice into sterilized pint jars and seal in a Bain Marie*.

*For a Bain Marie, place jars in a deep saucepan and fill with water to cover the jars by 2”. Bring to a gentle boil. When the water boils turn off heat and allow the jars to stand, submerged, until cool. This recipe made 4 pints of pears and you would never suspect that there was any vinegar in the recipe!

I actually took pictures of the entire process and made a scrapbook layout. Try them and let me know what you think.
