complexes, and ductile shear zones. My approaches range from the mechanics of large-scale systems such as thrust belts or collisional plateaux, down to microscale analyses of deformational mechanisms in rocks and their implications for rock rheology. My areas of expertise are primarily in field methods of structural analysis, structural and metamorphic petrology, microstructure, and structural mechanics; but my work has always been conducted in collaboration with scientists from other disciplines. Recent and active research projects include (1) the recently completed PICASSO project to investigate the geodynamics of the Alboran region in the western Mediterranean, in collaboration with an international team of geoscientists, funded by the NSF Continental Dynamics program; (2) deformation mechanisms and paleo-stress on the Cretaceous subduction zone interface in California below the down-dip limit of seismicity, funded by the NSF Tectonics program; (3) a series of investigations into the mechanics of ductile shear zones, funded in part by the Southern California Earthquake Center; (4) a comparative study of the variation in structure and rheology with depth of a plate-scale intracontinental thrust in NW Scotland and a plate-scale intracontinental normal fault in the western Alps, and (5) experimental analysis of the stress and temperature sensitivity of microstructures in calcite and in ice. Teaching activities During my ten years at USC, I have created or largely redesigned the following courses: the metamorphic module of undergraduate Petrology (Geol 316), undergraduate Structural Geology / Tectonics (Geol 321); and graduate courses in Tectonics (Geol 531), Advanced Mapping (Geol 532); Mechanics of Lithospheric Deformation (Geol 534, jointly with Professor T. Becker), Microstructure and Rock Rheology (Geol 535), and Advanced Metamorphic Petrology (Geol 568). I also teach a General Education course in Introductory Geology (Geol 105). In 2012 I prepared and taught a new 4-unit Maymester course involving research-oriented field teaching in southern Spain; this ran again in May 2014, and will run in May 2018. Advisement I currently advise 3 PhD students, and I am on the guidance committees of several more. In total 26 PhD students have graduated so far under my advisement (see below).
