Winter Event 2011
During the 2011 Ag & HES Alumni Winter Event, the
College honored its newest inductees to the Scovell &
Erikson Society. We are delighted to welcome 40 new
members between August 30, 2009 and December 31,
2010. Through their generous support new scholarships
and research funds have been established, facilities will
be renovated or constructed, and projects and student
activities were underwritten.
The University announced that the UK Fellows Program
will undergo a few revisions effective July 1, 2011.
Starting with the new fiscal year, the entry level gift to be
recognized as a UK Fellow will be $25,000 over a five-
year period. New levels have been added to the program
also. To be recognized as a Scovell & Erikson Society
member, at least half of the contribution should be
earmarked for a College of Agriculture program or fund.
If you have thought about becoming a UK Fellow in the
past, now is the time to join under the current
commitment level of $10,000 over a 10 year period. For
more information, contact the Office for Advancement at
859.257.7200.

I‟m excited about the opportunity to serve as President of the
Ag & HES Alumni Association for 2011 and 2012. It is
certainly an honor and privilege to be part of a successful
organization that serves more than 18,000 graduates of the
UK College of Agriculture. What makes the UK Ag & HES
Alumni Association one of the more successful organizations in
the country? With a background in the dairy business I would
reference a three legged milk stool when explaining why you
should be proud of your Association.
Like any successful organization there must be a quality
product or services offered and supported by an engaged
Board and staff. One leg of the stool is our link to the UK College of Agriculture and it‟s presence in 120 counties
offering a wide range of programs to not only it‟s alumni but to the entire Commonwealth. The second leg is the
Alumni Board. It is an understatement to say that our alumni board is an engaged board. We routinely have over
30 members attend quarterly board meetings representing the 14 chapters across the state or participating on a
sub-committee of the Association. The third leg is having the support of competent and passionate staff. Our
Advancement staff enjoys working with alumni and organizing the many events held throughout the year.
Our Association is fortunate to have the support from Dean Scott Smith and the entire administration of the College.
Our annual alumni events such as the winter meeting and Roundup are successful thanks to the support of the
administration and due to the work of our Advancement staff. The highly successful Ag Roundup has become a
model for other alumni groups to duplicate at their respective colleges and campuses across the nation.
As President, I pledge my commitment to continue the work of the Ag & HES Alumni Association to increase
awareness of UK College of Agriculture programs; to provide opportunities for networking and fellowship; to fund
scholarships; to assist with student recruitment and most importantly, provide a connection between alumni and the
College.
I look forward to meeting you at one of the 14 area chapter meetings or at one of the state-wide events over the
next two years.
Kentucky Agriculture Leadership Program
Central Kentucky Agricultural Credit Association
presented a check in the amount of $20,000 to
Dr. Steve Isaacs to fund the Kentucky
Agriculture Leadership Program (KALP). The
Association‟s total commitment to the program‟s
Endowment is $25,000.
Additionally, KALP recently received a $10,000 grant through the
Douglas D. Sims Fund for Rural Leadership, which was
established in 2006 by CoBank with a $1 million donation to
recognize Douglas D. Sims' 37 years of service to the Farm
Credit System. The Fund focuses on the development of rural
leaders, particularly those who are committed to making their
rural communities better places to live. The Fund is administered
by the Farm Credit System Foundation, a non-profit corporation
sponsored by donations from Farm Credit System institutions and
by more than 1,000 individuals affiliated with the Farm Credit
System. This is the second $10,000 grant the Sims Fund has
awarded to KALP.

A financial lending cooperative has created an endowment that will provide scholarships to students majoring in agriculture at the University of Kentucky.
Honoring a UK College of Agriculture graduate, the Donnie Winters Agriculture Endowment was established by the board of directors of Farm Credit Services of Mid-America, a $17 billion lender serving more than 20,000 farmers and rural residents throughout Kentucky. The endowment recognizes the contributions of Winters, who has served in a number of capacities within the organization for more than 40 years, including CEO since 1989. Winters recently announced he would retire from Farm Credit later this year.

"We could think of no better way to support education and agriculture and to honor the achievements of an individual who has contributed greatly to the growth and viability of this organization," said Dan Flanagan, board member from Campbellsville. "We are deeply appreciative of all Donnie has done for our association, our staff and our customers. He has inspired us to perform at the highest level possible for the advancement of agriculture and rural America."
Winters graduated from UK in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in agriculture. “He is a strong supporter of the College of Agriculture,” said Marci Hicks, the college's director for development. He was named a UK Fellow and College of Agriculture Scovell Society member in the spring of 1991 when Farm Credit Services of Mid-America established the Farm Credit Services Endowed Scholarship. To date, 37 students have been awarded a total of $53,250 in scholarship assistance from this endowment.
In addition to scholarships, Farm Credit Services of Mid-America has helped to support student-related activities and organizations and the Kentucky Agricultural Leadership Program. The company has supported UK's work in rural journalism as well.
Winters was also instrumental in establishing the company's support of 4-H youth development programs run through UK Cooperative Extension Service.
