QUESTION 3 - WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK

By Joe Bodfish

Feedback: Documentary• After completing our main product and ancillary tasks

(documentary, radio trailer and a TV Listings magazine double page spread) we held several focus groups and questionnaire to gather feedback from our target audience on our products. We first gave a questionnaire to 11 people from our target audience this included 6 female and 5 male students. The questionnaire was about the documentary and featured nine questions. These questions focused around the enjoyment of the documentary, factual importance of the documentary and suitability for the target audience.

Question 1 - Are you Male or Female • This was a simple question to find out how gender may

affect our results as males are our primary target audience due to in our research discovering these are the people most likely to play violent video games.

Male Female

Question 2 – Is the Documentary Informative

• This question was important to see if the documentary was for filling it purpose in educating the target audience. From these results we can see that there was a very positive reaction with all 12 people feeling the documentary was either vey informative or informative. This shows we succeed in educating the audience on the dangers of violent video games making the documentary more professional as it is a common code to help make the audience understand the topic/subject.

Question 3 – Did you Learn Something

• This question was again important, his is because as previously stated a professional high quality documentary's educate the audience. Therefore this question shows us if the target audience did learn anything new about violent video games and the negative effects they can have. As can be seen this was again overwhelming positive as every audience member said they did learn something. This means the documentary did for fill its purpose of educating the audience.

Did you learn something?

Yes

No

Question 4 – The language used is Suitable

• This question was intended for the target audience as we felt it was extremely important that the language used in the documentary directly engages the target audience. This will attract them to watch the rest of the documentary. To engage the target audience the language had to be suited to them, this meant the style of voice over and words used had to be understandable for the target audience. As can be seen this was again a very positive reaction with the target audience themselves stating the language was suited to them.

Question 5– Did the documentary keep your interest all the way through? • This question was important as despite a documentary needing to be

factual to educate the audience it is primarily a source of entertainment and should satisfy and keep the target audience interest throughout. Most people felt the documentary did keep their interest however a small amount disagreed. This is concerning as our documentary failed to interest all of our target audience. meaning our

product did not fully for fill its purpose.

Question 6 - Was the Music Suitable?• The music used is important to keep the viewer engaged.

It should also attract the target audience by being music they often listen to, however it should not be distracting. As can be seen our results show that most believed the music was suitable, however 17 percent felt it wasn't. This means the music may have not engaged the target audience or was distracting. This should be improved as the music is a crucial part of the documentary.

Question 7 - Did you like the Narrator we Used?

• The narrator is a vey important part of the documentary as this is the voice that guides the audience through the documentary. For these reasons a voice over should be clear and informative. Everyone said they liked the voice over showing that he gives information clearly and is appealing to our target audience. This is overwhelming positive and allows our documentary to be informative and professional.

Question 8 - What would you Rate the Documentary?• We simply asked the target audience to rate our

documentary out of 10. As can be seen 6 people rated it 9 and 5 rated it 10. this is again very positive with all of the target audience scoring the documentary high. this shows that through codes and conventions we made a successful documentary.

Question 9 - would you show the Documentary to a Family Member or Friend?

• This question shows us if our documentary can engage audiences outside the target audience. This is because if shown to family and friends the target audience can clearly appeal to a wide range audience. Our results show a positive to mixed reaction, with one quarter saying that would not show to family or friends. this shows us that our documentary may be able to engage a wider audience but not everyone showed by the mixed reaction.

• The feedback was very positive showing us that our main product has for filled its purpose of entertaining and informing the target audience. However the documentary was not perfect as when asking the people who took the questionnaire what they would change a large majority said sound levels could be improved. This is an important point as sound is crucial to making the documentary appear professional. Another improvement suggested was the inclusion of a case study. this could include a real life case where video games have lead to violent behavior. We feel this would have been a good addition to shock the audience and add a more factual basis to the documentary.

Radio Trailer: Feedback• The radio trailer was one of the ancillary tasks we had to

produce. The radio trailer we found during our research should be around 30 seconds long and use a range of codes and conventions such as music and voice over to engage a target audience. The purpose of a radio trailer is to promote the documentary and give an insight into what the documentary may include. We asked 10 people from our target audience 7 male and 3 female five questions on the quality, enjoyment and suitability of the radio trailer.

Question 1 - The radio trailer was proffessinal

• This question immediately sees if the radio trailer seemed professional to the target audience, this is important as if it does not the target audience are much less likely to watch the documentary as they will also feel that is unprofessional. As can be seen 4 people strongly agreed with the statement, 4 agreed and 2 people disagreed. This shows that most felt positive about the trailer however the degree to how much they felt the radio trailer was professional is mixed. This may be due to different tastes but neither the less shows more could be done to improve the trailer and therefore improve the promotion for the main product.

Question 2 - The background music was Suitable

• The music much like for the documentary is very important for engaging the target audience. Therefore it should be a style of music the target audience know so they are instantly engaged. However it should not distract them from the important information within the trailer such as dates and times. The music is even more important in the radio trailer than in the documentary as there are no visual aids to attract the target audience. As can be seen most people felt positively that the music was suitable however 2 people didn't. this again shows a positive to a mixed reaction. This may be due to the target audience having different music tastes making it hard to make the music suitable for everyone.

Question 3 - The Radio Trailer was interesting through out• It is important that the radio trailer remains enjoyable through out to

engage the audience. this is needed so that al relevant and important information can be given to better promote the main product. A majority agreed with this statement however there was some mixed reactions with three person strongly agreeing and two disagreeing. The radio trailer may need to utilize more sound effects or other interesting noises to ensure everyone finds the trailer interesting through out.

Question 4 - The language used was Suitable

• The language used in the radio trailer is important as it needs to be understandable yet engaging for the target audience. this can be done through the use of slang or phrases which directly relate to the target audience. It is important as the audience need to understand the trailer so they can know where to watch the documentary for the radio trailer to successfully act as a promotion tool. As can be seen the audience reacted very positive to the language used as most agreed or strongly agreed. I feel we therefore successfully used language to attract and engage the target audience.

Question 5 - The Topics raised in the Radio Trailer were Relevant• It is important that the radio trailer remains constantly

focused on engaging the target audience and promoting the documentary. For this reason all information must be relevant to the documentary for the radio trailer to keep the interest of the target audience and to promote the documentary in a short 30 seconds. As can be seen every thought the radio trailer remained relevant and therefore helped successfully promote and attract the target audience.

• From the feedback given I feel the radio trailer was also successful as most feedback was positive. However compared to the documentary feedback was more mixed, this may be due to the difficulty to satisfy a whole target audience within 30 seconds without the help of visual aids. I would in future set out more time to create the radio trailer so it can effectively engage the target audience. Some of the audience suggested improvements could be made to the amount of sound effects. Some felt more sound effects would make the trailer more entertaining and keep their attention. This would allow the trailer to be more successful as it would further engage and attract the target audience. Despite this the radio trailer did for fill its purpose as it effectively promoted the documentary.

Magazine double page spread: Feedback

• The double page spread was the second ancillary task we had to produce. During our research we found magazine double page spread could be a effective way of advertise and promoting the documentary if a appropriate use of a range of codes and conventions such as mastheads and colours to engage a target audience were used. The purpose of a magazine double page spread is to promote the documentary and give an insight into what the documentary may include. We asked 10 people from our target audience 8 male and 2 female five questions on the quality, enjoyment and suitability of the magazine double page spread.

Question 1 - The Magazine Grabbed your Attention• It is important that the magazine effectively and instantly grabs the

reader attention this is so they are not distracted and will read the article, therefore promoting the main product. this could be done through the use of large mastheads, bright colours and interesting images. The audience gave us a mainly positive reaction. I believe we effectively used codes and conventions to grab the audiences attention shown through their feedback, however a more powerful font may have been more engaging to ensure all target audience

member felt the magazine grabbed their attention.

Question 2 - The language of the Article was appropriate• The language used in the article is important to engage the target

audience. the language needs to be suited to the target audiences reading and speaking style. This is so they don't get bored while reading the article; suitable language is therefore used to effectively engage the reader and help promote the documentary be displaying the content of what happens in the documentary. the feedback was very mixed upon how suitable the article was. This may be due to some of the target audience wanting a professional formal style and others preferring a more laidback fun approach. It is therefore hard to satisfy all the target audience and this needs to be improved.

Question 3 - The Colours are Apropiate

• Colour is a very important aspect of the double page spread, it can be used to attract the target audience and reflect the style of the ancillary and main product. We used reds, blacks and whites. This was done so the white and black would look formal and professional which would contrast with the bright red. The bright red grabs the audiences attention and also reflects on the blood and gore in violent video games. The feedback suggests that the colours were very appropriate. This is because of their professional but eye grabbing effect and symbolism of blood and gore from our topic.

Question 4 - The images are Appropriate• The images we used were taken directly from the documentary; this

therefore shows the audience the quality of the documentary as well as what may be included in the documentary. This therefore effectively promotes the documentary as it is offering direct insight into the sort of images and events which take place within the main product. The feedback suggests a positive reaction to the images used with some mixed opinion. we felt using two images would allow the target audience a clear insight into the documentary but the mixed opinion may come from some people feeling the use of one large image is more appropriate as this is a common code of magazine double page spreads.

Question 5 - The Magazine Looked Professinal

• We are directly asking the target audience if they felt the magazine looked professional, as it is important it does as if it does not it gives the audience the impression the documentary will also not be professional. This therefore stops the magazine effectively advertising the main product and does not allow the double page spread to for fill its purpose. The feedback was very positive and therefore this shows us that the magazine can for fill its purpose as it allows the magazine to attract and engage the target audience.

• From the feedback given I feel the magazine double page spread was also very successful as most feedback was positive. Compared to the documentary feedback was more mixed, however the feedback was more positive than the radio trailer. this may be due to the fact it is harder to engage a entire target audeince without the use of video or sound. I would in future try to write a more engaging article to satiisfy a larger majority of the target audience. Some of the audience suggested improvements could be made to the use of images and instead of having two medium sized images either follow convention and use one large image or break the codes of double page spread and use lots of smaller images to offer a even greater insight into the documenatry. This would allow the magazine to be more successful as it would further engage and attract the target audience. Despite this the magazine double page spread did for fill its purpose as it effectively promoted the documentary.

Focus Groups: Documenatry• We also conducted several focus groups to get direct feedback from the target

audience without the restriction of questions on a questionnaire. These were filmed on a camera and uploaded to YouTube. The focus groups enabled us to see reactions to specific parts of the documentary, radio trailer and magazine double page spread. From the focus group we realized that the target audience believed the documentary was more one sided than first considered. This may be due to the target audiences opinion on violent video games as most still considered them okay to play, this may have made them feel the documentary was more one sided as they could not accept both sides of the argument. An improvement suggested by the audience in the focus group was to use "less archival footage and more of our own". This is a good point as we did use a considerable amount of archival footage to show violence in video games. The target audience may have found this repetitive or boring. The target audience in the focus group also stated the music suited the documentary but did become "repetitive", however this was done to not cause distractions for the audience.

Focus Groups: Radio Trailer• We also conducted several focus groups for the radio trailer, the members of

the focus groups all were part of our target audience. This was done to see a direct reaction from the target audience from the product directed at them. The focus group stated the radio trailer sounded "professional" and "realistic", this helps promote the main product as they then believed the high quality radio trailer made them believe the documentary would also be high quality. They also believed the clear voice over enabled them to understand where/when to watch the documentary further making the radio trailer a effective promotion tool. They also felt there was a clear link between the radio trailer and the documentary, this was due to the same voice over and clips from the documentary. When asked what improvements could be made they couldn't think of any.

Focus Groups: Double Page Spread• It was also important to conduct a focus group on the magazine double page spread,

as this was another important promotion tool and may affect peoples overall opinion on our products. We again completed focus groups using members of our target audience to get their impressions on product aimed at appealing to them. They believed the colours used were bright and good at grabbing the readers attention. They also felt the bold font draw them to the double page spread as it made the magazine stand out. This makes the double page spread an effective promotion tool as the target audience were naturally drawn to the double page spread. However the focus group members did state "you might have sacrificed a bit of a professional look to attract your target audience". despite this we are pleased as it is hard to attract a younger target audience to a magazine double page spread so we do not mind sacrificing some professionalism. They also believed the language used in the article was appropriate for the target audience, this helps for fill the double page spreads purpose as it allows the target audience to easily read the article to find when/where the documentary is on. The focus group felt there was a clear link between the fonts and colours used in this ancillary task and the main product, effectively creating a brand identity.
