9 Plant Peace.Jimmy Carter’s values grew from his roots in Plains, Georgia. The lessons taught by family, teachers, neighbors, and mentors helped Jimmy and Rosalynn make a big difference in the world. In 2002, Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his “untiring effort” to advance peace, democracy, and human rights around the globe.

Education is Key.Education is Key.

Imagine: you became president! What teacher would you thank? Write them a thank you note! Include things they have taught you. Bonus: show your note to that teacher!

Beloved teacher, principal, and superintendent Julia Coleman taught students of Plains High School—including young Jimmy Carter—the value of education. She would say to her students, “Students, always do your best—someday one of you may grow up to become President.”

the lady from the next farm came to visit, and Mama commentedon how many tramps she had helped that week. Mrs. Bacon said, ‘Well, I’m thankful that they never come in my yard.’ The next time we had some of the vagrant visitors, Mama asked why they had stopped at our house and not the others. After some hesitation, one of them said, ‘Ma’am, we have a set of symbols that we use, to show the attitude of each family along the road. The post on your mailbox is marked to say that you don’t turn people away or mistreat us.’ After they were gone, we went out and found some unobtrusive scratches; Mama told us not to change them.”—Jimmy Carter. An Hour Before Daylight.

“One day,

Jimmy Carter grew up during the Great Depression, a time when a lack of jobs left many poor and starving. Railroad “tramps” or “hobos” stopped in towns like Archery, Georgia, to look for work and food.

DEMOCRACYDEMOCRACYPeople around the world should have a fair government, where people choose their leaders through elections (voting).

PEACEPEACEInstead of war and violence we should try to resolve confl icts (disagreements and problems) through treaties—agreements between governments.

HEALTHHEALTHBy making sure people have clean water, medicine, and medical care, we can help stop diseases and improve people’s lives.

EQUALITYEQUALITYEveryone should have the same rights and opportunities; no matter who you are or what you look like, you should be treated fairly.

“RachelClark was the one who taught me how to fi sh in the creeks that drained our land, and on our long walks together she would tell me about the [plants] and [animals] around us and let me know that God expected us to take good care of His creation... She talked to me about religious and moral values that shaped a person’s life, and I listened to her with acute attention.Without seeming to preach, she taught me how I should behave.”—Jimmy Carter. “RachelClark was the one who taught me how to fi sh in the creeks that drained our land, and on our long walks together she would tell me about the [plants] and [animals] around us and let me know that God expected us to take good care of His creation... She talked to me about religious and moral values that shaped a person’s life, and I listened to her with acute attention.Without seeming to preach, she taught me how I should behave.”—Jimmy Carter. the lady from the next farm came to visit, and Mama commentedon how many tramps she had helped that week.
