Another memorable thing about Rose was traveling to NYC my freshman year as part of Mrs. Meetze’s chorus program; our group sang at Carnegie Hall. I still brag about the experience to friends in New York, where I’ve lived for several years now, when we walk past the venue. A last thing that stands out in my mind is the diversity. Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! Over the last four years I have had the opportunity to use this forum to share the accomplishments of our current students. Beginning this school year, I will highlight various alumni and their achievements since graduation. This month’s notable alumnus is Seyward Darby, the Class of 2018 Convocation Keynote Speaker. She graduated from Rose in 2003. Best part of being a Rampant (What made your experience at Rose memorable?):

There were many things that made my time at Rose memorable. A person who stands out is Mrs. Haynes. I was sophomore class president the first year she was at Rose, and for the next three years she was my rock at school. Her energy and support were incomparable. She always made me feel like I was capable of whatever I set my mind to. We remain friends today. I was so glad to attend a high school where people of different races and socioeconomic backgrounds experienced their days together. I think it prepared me to reach across the boundaries that differences create once I was out in the real world. I’m forever grateful for that.

Advice for current Rose students:

Be kind to each other. That’s more important than anything else—more important than grades, sports

scores, college acceptances, and romantic relationships. In both words and actions, support one another. If you see bullying happening, speak up, don’t join in. Get to know people who aren’t like you. Gain emotional intelligence. You will be better for it.

Share a memorable or unique experience you’ve had since graduating from Rose.

What stands out isn’t a single event, but a trend—and that’s travel. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to

dozens of countries as part of my job as a journalist and with friends or my husband, who also loves adventure. I’ve hiked to Machu Picchu, slept on the beach in Zanzibar, climbed a volcano in Nicaragua, watched the sun rise over the Himalayas in Nepal, played with wild penguins in South Africa, crashed a wedding in Kosovo, gone on safari in Kenya, jogged through a lightning storm in Swaziland, watched flamenco dancers in Barcelona, kayaked in Lake Como, eaten fish straight out of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, tubed down a river in Laos, climbed temples in Cambo-dia, and much more. I love to plan trips to new places. The world is so big and diverse, and I feel privileged that I get to experience it.

Academic Boosters: Bu$ine$$ News

Your donations give Rose students opportunities to explore, learn, grow and shine!

The main focus of Academic Boosters (AB) is to support the teachers and students at Rose through funding academic grants written and submitted to the AB Board by teachers. Our first grant cycle is in September (1st Semester) and our second grant cycle is in January (2nd Semester) giving every class and academic team an equal opportunity to request funding for academic endeavors unable to be fulfilled without your donor dollars.

This semester, the board met on Sept. 19th and granted almost $15,000 to benefit Rose students. These Booster dollars will go to classroom resources in the EC Department to the Science Department, a 3D Printer for Art and STEM programs, ACT Skills Mastery, the annual student run Haunted House, and various entrance fees for our students to compete at the Regional, State, National and International level across academic disciplines.

Throughout the year, we will update you on the status of these grants and their outcomes in this section “Your Donor Dollars at Work”. Thank you for your support of academics at Rose!
