Kiwi Regional Airlines is reportedly looking at crowdfunding to raise money for a second aircraft, which would be more likely used for charters and as back-up rather than to add any new routes. The airline’s chief executive, Ewan Wilson, told Mediaworks he was ‘seri- ously thinking about’ going down the crowdfunding route—saying it’s not so much about raising the money, but having a community of Kiwi shareholders that he’s interested in. However he warned listeners on the Paul Henry show that aviation is the ‘riskiest business there is’. The air- craft would be used to cover during planned and unplanned engineering work, and Wilson says he also be- lieves there’s ‘considerable capacity’ to develop in the charter area. After months of speculation, the First Travel Group has today announced that the future is …you; YOU Travel that is. Pitched as the result of input from all of the group’s stakeholders, the new YOU brand is made up of the former United Travel franchisees who have left helloworld, and will not officially launch until 01 Apr. However, First has today revealed a sneak peak of its new brand, and the philosophy behind the new network, which is open to other First agencies and interested parties. Calling service, knowledge and ex- pertise ‘a given’ for retail travel agents, First Travel Group general manag- er retail John Willson says the new brand’s proposition aims to present travel in a new light and be more inspirational. “The result is a brand that’s all about ‘you. We’re putting the consumer in the centre like never before. And that’s not just lip service. We’re going to release some incredible new initiatives to the market that we think our customers will love.” . . . Wait and See The trade is going to have to wait to learn more about those initiatives, and the brand’s proposition for its franchisees, until 01 Apr—when the franchisees are released from their United Travel contracts and can start trading under the YOU Travel brand. However, First says its YOU Travel vision is ‘to put more colour into everyday life by challenging what it means to be a travel agency’ and ‘to be the ‘zag’ in the industry that captures peoples’ hearts and minds’. It is also promising YOU will launch many in- dustry firsts. “You might love the new brand, you might hate it, but you can’t deny that you will notice and remem- ber it,” adds Willson. First Unveils Its New Brand: It’s YOU More Screening In Place Passengers who arrive from Australia may be greeted by detector dogs as soon as they step off the plane as the Ministry for Primary Industries works to prevent a possible fruit fly outbreak. The move follows an outbreak of Mediterranean fruit fly in Adelaide, which has seen the local government impose a quarantine zone in the city. “Our intelligence team determined there was a biosecurity threat to New Zealand, so we’ve swung into gear very quickly,” says MPI’s Craig Hughes. Having dogs at the arrival gate rather than after Customs allows greater scru- tiny of hand luggage, says Hughes. “Moving detector dogs as close as pos- sible to the arrival point is something international passengers are going to see a lot more of in the future,” he adds. MPI has also introduced a stricter approach to risk assessment, says Hughes. “If there is any doubt, passen- gers will be screened by x-ray and sent to our search benches,” he says.

A small contingent of Kiwi agents has returned from a three-night cruise onboard Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, where they heard first-hand about the ship’s GBP70 mil-lion refurbishment.During the cruise, ex Auckland to Wellington via the Bay of Islands, the agents were given the low down on the big plans for Queen Mary 2, which will see her go into an exten-sive dry dock in Germany 27 May-21 Jun. Due to the increasing number of clients seeking to holiday in multi-generational groups, 15 single state-rooms will be introduced; while further growing trends for those booking balcony staterooms and those wishing to have more flexibility with dining arrangements will see 30 additional Britannia Club balcony staterooms created onboard—where clients can dine any time in the dedicated Britannia Club restaurant, which is to be expanded. Meanwhile,

clients looking to travel with dogs or cats will be happy to hear the ship will get a further 10 kennels for four legged travellers. There will also be a range of changes to the ship’s dining areas, including the addition of the French restaurant Verandah and the removal of the Todd English restaurant; while both the Princess and Queens Grills res-taurants will be redesigned; as will the Kings Court buffet. Furthermore, the ship’s Winter Garden will be re-done and renamed Carinthia Lounge. However, as well as learning about these changes, the agents enjoyed the onboard experience, with highlights including the chance to dine at Todd English; gaze up at the wonders of the cosmos in the Planetarium; as well as enjoy afternoon tea in the Queens room. Pictured onboard is: 1 Andy Bruce, P&O and Cunard; Michele Murphy, Bon Voyage Cruises; Alexandria Rugg, Cruise Republic; Amber Gilling, Cruise Connection; Chris Harrop, United Travel Mairangi Bay; Jacqui Kennedy, House of Travel Product; Cherryl Browne and Marie Leadbetter, Cruise World; Julia Hind-man, Flight Centre Product; Rosie Scates, Cruiseabout Takapuna; Lydia Haydon, United Travel Bethlehem; Jeff Leckey, Grabacruise; and Anna Seabourne, House of Travel Papamoa. 2 Host Andy Bruce making a cock-tail. 3 Cruise World’s Cherryl Browne shaking up a cocktail. 4 Cruise Con-nection’s Amber Gilling and Bon Voy-age Cruises’ Michele Murphy having a bit of fun during the safety briefing. 5 Cruise World’s Marie Leadbetter trying out the wine offering.
