Jesus Exceeds The Need by Pastor Kent Munsey

10:00 am service

SERMON POINTS INTRODUCTION: 1. MAKE ROOM FOR GOD’S PROMISES 2. DON’T SETTLE 3. REALIZE THAT PROMISES DON’T ALWAYS COME AS WE EXPECT CONCLUSION Main  Scriptures: John  21:  1-‐14,  Ruth  2:  1-‐23,  2  Kings  5:14 INTRODUCTION: We  serve  a  God  that  is  fully  aware  of  our  needs.  God  doesn't  want  to  just  meet  your  need,  but  He  wants  to  exceed  your  need.  We  can  see  this  consistently  throughout  various  biblical  stories.     Make  room  for  God’s  promise John  21:  1-‐6 After  these  things  Jesus  showed  Himself  again  to  the  disciples  at  the  Sea  of  Tiberias,  and  in  this  way  He  showed  Himself:  2  Simon  Peter,  Thomas  called  the  Twin,  Nathanael  of  Cana  in  Galilee,  the  sons  of  Zebedee,  and  two  others  of  His  disciples  were  together.

3  Simon  Peter  said  to  them,  “I  am  going  fishing.” They  said  to  him,  “We  are  going  with  you  also.”  They  went  out  and  immediately[a]  got  into  the  boat,  and  that  night  they  caught  nothing.  4  But  when  the  morning  had  now  come,  Jesus  stood  on  the  shore;  yet  the  disciples  did  not  know  that  it  was  Jesus.  5  Then  Jesus  said  to  them,  “Children,  have  you  any  food?” They  answered  Him,  “No.” 6  And  He  said  to  them,  “Cast  the  net  on  the  right  side  of  the  boat,  and  you  will  find  some.”  So  they  cast,  and  now  they  were  not  able  to  draw  it  in  because  of  the  multitude  of  fish.                 John  21:1-‐6  Story  Recap: The  disciples  crowded  into  a  very  small  boat.  Although  they  had  a

need,  they  didn't  have  much  faith  (no  room  for  the  fish).  Nevertheless,  in  the  end,  their  nets  were  bursting  at  the  seams.

Main  Point:     Jesus  is  trying  to  exclamate  the  point  that  he  doesn't  just

want  to  meet  our  need,  but  he  wants  to  exceed  it.

2.      Don’t  settle

Ruth  2:  1-‐12 There  was  a  relative  of  Naomi’s  husband,  a  man  of  great  wealth,  of  the  family  of  Elimelech.  His  name  was  Boaz.2  So  Ruth  the  Moabitess  said  to  Naomi,  “Please  let  me  go  to  the  field,  and  glean  heads  of  grain  after  him  in  whose  sight  I  may  find  favor.” And  she  said  to  her,  “Go,  my  daughter.” 3  Then  she  left,  and  went  and  gleaned  in  the  field  after  the  reapers.  And  she  happened  to  come  to  the  part  of  the  field  belonging  to  Boaz,  who  was  of  the  family  of  Elimelech. 4  Now  behold,  Boaz  came  from  Bethlehem,  and  said  to  the

reapers,  “The  Lord  be  with  you!” And  they  answered  him,  “The  Lord  bless  you!” 5  Then  Boaz  said  to  his  servant  who  was  in  charge  of  the  reapers,  “Whose  young  woman  is  this?” 6  So  the  servant  who  was  in  charge  of  the  reapers  answered  and  said,  “It  is  the  young  Moabite  woman  who  came  back  with  Naomi  from  the  country  of  Moab.  7  And  she  said,  ‘Please  let  me  glean  and  gather  after  the  reapers  among  the  sheaves.’  So  she  came  and  has  continued  from  morning  until  now,  though  she  rested  a  little  in  the  house.” 8  Then  Boaz  said  to  Ruth,  “You  will  listen,  my  daughter,  will  you  not?  Do  not  go  to  glean  in  another  field,  nor  go  from  here,  but  stay  close  by  my  young  women.  9  Let  your  eyes  be  on  the  field  which  they  reap,  and  go  after  them.  Have  I  not  commanded  the  young  men  not  to  touch  you?  And  when  you  are  thirsty,  go  to  the  vessels  and  drink  from  what  the  young  men  have  drawn.” 10  So  she  fell  on  her  face,  bowed  down  to  the  ground,  and  said  to  him,  “Why  have  I  found  favor  in  your  eyes,  that  you  should  take  notice  of  me,  since  I  am  a  foreigner?” 11  And  Boaz  answered  and  said  to  her,  “It  has  been  fully  reported  to  me,  all  that  you  have  done  for  your  mother-‐in-‐law  since  the  death  of  your  husband,  and  how  you  have  left  your  father  and  your  mother  and  the  land  of  your  birth,  and  have  come  to  a  people  whom  you  did  not  know  before.  12  The  Lord  repay  your  work,  and  a  full  reward  be  given  you  by  the  Lord  God  of  Israel,  under  whose  wings  you  have  come  for  refuge.” Ruth  2:1-‐23  Story  Recap:   Ruth  is  a  foreigner  in  the  land  that  has  been  widowed  but

concerted  as  a  foreigner  to  the  faith.    She  was  seeking  God  and  following  law.  She  had  the  right  to  the  left  overs  of  the  harvest.  We  then  see  Boaz  show  up  (Character  of  God)    Boaz  tells  the  men  to  leave  heaps  behind.    This  is  all

a  result  of  Ruth  seeking  God. Main  points:     Sometimes  we  don't  wait  for  Boaz,  but  we  settle  for  his

second  and  third  causes  because  we  don't  believe  God  is  able  to  really  meet  the  need.

If  lamb’s  blood  gave  us  a  little  forgiveness,  how  much  more

does  Jesus'  blood  give  us?  Righteousness  is  chasing  after  us.     In  Jesus,  there  is  more  than  enough  for  us.  Once  God

forgives  our  sins  he  remembers  them  no  more.

 3.  Realize  that  God’s  promises  don’t  always  come  in  the  packages  we  expect  them  to

2  Kings  5:9-‐14 9  So  Naaman  went  with  his  horses  and  chariots  and  stopped  at  the  door  of  Elisha’s  house.  10  Elisha  sent  a  messenger  to  say  to  him,  “Go,  wash  yourself  seven  times  in  the  Jordan,  and  your  flesh  will  be  restored  and  you  will  be  cleansed.” 11  But  Naaman  went  away  angry  and  said,  “I  thought  that  he  would  surely  come  out  to  me  and  stand  and  call  on  the  name  of  the  Lordhis  God,  wave  his  hand  over  the  spot  and  cure  me  of  my  leprosy.  12  Are  not  Abana  and  Pharpar,  the  rivers  of  Damascus,  better  than  all  the  waters  of  Israel?  Couldn’t  I  wash  in  them  and  be  cleansed?”  So  he  turned  and  went  off  in  a  rage.  13  Naaman’s  servants  went  to  him  and  said,  “My  father,  if  the  prophet  had  told  you  to  do  some  great  thing,  would  you  not  have  done  it?  How  much  more,  then,  when  he  tells  you,  ‘Wash  and  be  cleansed’!” 14  So  he  went  down  and  dipped  himself  in  the  Jordan  seven

times,  as  the  man  of  God  had  told  him,  and  his  flesh  was  restored  and  became  clean  like  that  of  a  young  boy.                              2  Kings  5:1-‐14  Story  Recap; Naaman,  a  general  in  the  Old  Testament,  had  a  skin  disease  called

leprosy.  He  sought  out  healers,  but  he  came  up  short. In  desperation  he  traveled  120  miles  to  see  the  prophet,  but  a

servant  is  sent  out  to  him. Naaman  gets  furious  -‐  Naaman  thought  the  prophet  was  going  to

come  out,  wave  his  hand,  and  he  would  be  healed.  Instead,  he  is  told  to  travel  to  a  spring.  He  dips  into  the  water  7  times  and  is  healed.  His  skin  was  like  that  of  a  new  born  baby.

Main  Points:     Sometimes  Jesus  doesn't  work  as  we  think  He  will.     He  was  not  only  healed;  but  he  got  brand  new  skin!  Jesus

went  above  and  beyond  the  need CONCLUSION: The  thing  that  is  absolutely  necessary  to  this  is  obedience.  When  we  believe  and  trust  that  God  is  who  He  says  He  is,  we  can  obey. This  all  has  to  be  rooted  in  our  faith  that  God  will  meet  and  exceed  our  needs. Additional  Scriptures: The  Book  of  Esther 1  Samuel  17-‐21 John  8:1-‐11
