Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfi llment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the
gospel.”

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Today we hear how Jonah, sent by God to warn the people, storms through the streets of Nineveh, scaring the citizens out of their wits. And it works! God has a change of heart, seeing “by their actions” how the people turn from evil (Jonah 3:10). A new day dawns. Next we hear Paul telling the Corinthians, “The world in its present form is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:31). He calls for a change of heart. Stopping short of telling them to stop carrying out their everyday activities, he urges them—rather mysteriously—to live “as though” they aren’t doing the things they are doing. A new day has dawned. Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The kingdom of God is at hand!” (Mark 1:14). Simon and Andrew abandon their nets—and even their father—and follow him. A new day had dawned. Everyone has to change when a new day dawns: the Ninevites, the Corinthians, the apostles, even Jesus! Didn’t a new day dawn today for us as well?Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

In these almost eight blessed years since ordination in 2013, the journey has been adventurous, challenging and fi lled with personal rediscovery. The priesthood, if I may compare it to parenthood, goes through the same ups and downs in life. No one goes to school and learns how to be a parent until the children are born. The same is to be said of being a priest. I studied plenty of Philosophy and Theology subjects for years and years, but I started to learn how to be a priest the fi rst day I stepped foot into my fi rst assignment at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish here in Santa Barbara, which lasted from 2013 to 2016. I was then asked to transition to leadership here at Our Lady of Sorrows. I never imagined that I would be a priest in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And today, a pastor in the most beautiful parish in town with its historicity which makes us unique as a parish in downtown Santa Barbara.
As a leader, I have embraced that I am not alone in this ministry. I have a tremendous team of highly qualifi ed, competent, joyful and loving people who support me in my ministry daily. My biological family has been instrumental in my journey to becoming a priest; but it is my spiritual family, my parishioners, who encourage me to respond to God in this vocation as a priest of our Lord Jesus Christ, to expand His kingdom here on earth.
My hope for what lies ahead as the Pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows is to be a spiritual companion in the life of the parishioners and those who work directly with me. My love and admiration for your many eff orts to support our parish continue to give me hope for a brighter future for all. I am an imperfect man, but I strive to grow in holiness alongside each of you as a human being and as a priest. I look forward to embracing each other again after the pandemic. Let us not lose focus that the one we follow, is our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, who models for us a life of virtue, chastity and humility.
I have a special devotion and connection to the Virgin Mary. She is my greatest loving supporter and comforter when I experience diffi culties. She reminds me of how blessed I am to be here serving you as your pastor. I am deeply grateful for everything you have taught me and will continue to teach me in the years ahead.
May we continue to transform one another with the Love and Joy of Jesus through Mary. The End.
Entonces me
Fin.

Did You Know?Talk to your children about social media challengesChildren have spent many months at home now, separated from friends and classmates. Social media is a great tool to stay in touch, but there are defi nitely dangerous aspects to much “screen time” that parents need to be aware about. Social media challenges range from funny and harmless to risky and dangerous — and sometimes even illegal. If your child has social media accounts, talk to them about making smart choices and about knowing the diff erence between harmless pranks and seriously dangerous stunts. Make a pact to discuss anything they see their friends or acquaintances doing before they try it out at home. Visit: https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
