Samuel Lee and Hyoju Lee Claremont School of Teology/Claremont Lincoln University  Te richness o Kor ean Christian spiritual resources are examined in the recently published work by James Newton Poling and HeeSun Kim, Korean Resources for Pastoral Teology: Dance of Han, Jeong, and Salim.  Te authors invite non-Korean audiences to deepen their understanding o pastoral theology, care, and counseling which they dene as “a ministry practice and academic discipline arising rom reection on the church’s ministries o care or persons, amilies and communities” (p. 2). By introducing theological reections on t he important Korean constructs o han, jeong, and salim, Poling and Kim broaden the traditional horizon o pastoral ministry . In the rst two chapters, the authors present what is perhaps a too-brie history o Korea, using these pages to provide descriptions o Korean religions rom ancient times to the present. Sketching out 4,500 years o Korean history and religious historical topograp hy in fy pages would be a challenging task or any schola r because it allows only strokes so broad they r un the risk o being caricaturesque. All readers would benet rom reading these chapters; however, we reviewers remind them that to “know” Korea at all will require additional learning. As scholars, we do not want to latch ourselves with shallow knowledge, lest we do participate in the colonial project o stereotyping, knowingly or unknowingly. All in all, however, more detailed descriptions o the contemporary Korean church situations, such as the rigid denominationalism, mega-church movemen ts, global missionary movements, and the status o minjung theology afer military regimes, would have been helpul to U.S. pastoral theologians understanding o the Korean church. Perhaps, this must be the task or another book. In Chapters 6 and 7, Poling and Kim delve more deeply into Korean spirituality as it bears on t he practice o p astoral theology , care, and counseling by explaining the cultural constructs o han, jeong , and salim. Han , translated as “suering,” has multiaceted meanings in Korean. Park (1993, p. 31) denes han as “rustrated hope, the collapsed eeling o pain, letting go [o hope], resentul bitterness, and the wounded heart.” More than the ordinary experience o discouragement, Han  reers to lie that because o prolonged abuse and injustice has lost its spirit. According to Poling and Kim, this Korean term enables victims to express indescribably dreadul experiences. It can enable pastoral theologians to understand victims and the complica ted healing process necessary to recover
