THE ART OF MAKING USEFUL PRODUCTSChances are you used an object this morning created by an industrial designer. Many of the gadgets or appliances we use every day begin as concepts imagined by these professionals who combine art and engineering to design solutions that satisfy shape, ergonomic and functional criteria to make our lives easier. “I guess I have always wanted to be a designer from a very early age, always curious about how things are made and why they look the way they do,” Jens Paulus, founder of Jens Paulus Design, said.

Jens Paulus’ first real design project was a lamp. “It was part of an initial design class at the University of Art and Design in Offenbach, Germany,” he recalled. “It was all about learning the principles of industrial design by focusing on product semantics. The entire design process was done manually: sketching, creating prototypes out of foam and producing the real scale model in the workshop. I remember turning small bits and pieces out of aluminum and using the milling machine and bending tools to create all the parts that later had to be painted and assembled. It was a perfect learning experience on how to transform my ideas into reality.”

EMOTIONAL YET PRACTICALSince starting his own design business, Jens Paulus experimented with digital tools to take his activity to the next level. “I have been a CATIA V5 user for over eight years. When I learned about the Lighthouse project and the possibility to work with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform and in particular its CATIA Creative Design solution on the cloud, I immediately signed up. In recent years, Paulus has been focusing more on yacht design, working on custom sailing and motor yachts measuring up to 33m. “What is exciting about yacht design projects is the complexity and diversity of challenges. When collaborating with engineers, naval architects and craftsmen, a designer has the opportunity to employ his creativity and skills on a wide variety of design challenges. This includes setting the main architectural lines, structuring exterior and interior spaces, and finally going into all the details. Often, almost everything on board is custom-designed,” he said. “This means that I need to create a wide range of different components that need to fit perfectly together in the end. Although challenging, I am more confident of the end-result because with CATIA, I can display the finished product in a virtual environment before submitting designs for manufacture. “

At the start of each new project, Paulus begins by drawing his ideas in 3D with CATIA Natural Sketch. “Starting out in 3D helps me visualize my idea from all angles and to see it come to life before my eyes. It is a quick and intuitive process that is a net improvement over 2D hand-drawn sketches,” he said.

Paulus then uses the 3DEXPERIENCE platform’s concept modeling technology CATIA Imagine and Shape to rework an object as if it were a clay model. “I can manipulate and sculpt the 3D volume to explore various possibilities from the early conceptual phase,” he said. “3D is an integral part of my design process from the very beginning. Realistic rendering with colors and textures helps reduce the need for physical prototypes. My clients have a perfect digital representation of their future product and I save time and money all around. Moreover, the modeling tools are based on an intuitive interface with easy to understand icons that have made transitioning from CATIA V5 to CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE fast and smooth. I did not need to spend hours relearning everything and I even gained in productivity.”

Moreover, working on the cloud enables me to work from anywhere and not only within the four walls of my office. I can access my data and all the applications I need because they are on the cloud. I can even meet with my clients in a park if I want to discuss their project. It has transformed the way I do business.”

It took only ten minutes and a few clicks for Paulus to access the Dassault Systèmes’ cloud. “The cloud environment is very stable and offers a level of security I could never have at home with my own server. I am more relaxed about problems like data loss or unauthorized access to my intellectual property. By displaying the outcome in real time, I can react fast and make adjustments and improvements until the result is satisfactory.
