Start 2017 S.M.A.R.T.
As we begin the new calendar year, many will develop some New Year’s
Resolutions. The beginning of a new year, seems to be a good time to
reflect on the past year and plan for the adventure that lies ahead.
Unfortunately, the statistics present a dismal account of human
failure at achieving those resolutions. For some interesting statistics
about how many people make resolutions, the top ten list, and their
success or failure rate check out:
http://www.statisticbrain.com/new-years-resolution-statistics/
According to Forbes Magazine on 8% of people achieve their
resolutions and they explain how at
http://www.forbes.com/sites/dandiamond/2013/01/01/just-8-of-
people-achieve-their-new-years-resolutions-heres-how-they-did-
it/#6a728aff304c
Dan Diamond's article in Forbes explains that successful resolutions
usually are simple, tangible, obvious, and the person believes they can
be successful. That makes me think of our 4-H SMART goals.
When your Club completed their Charter at the beginning of the 4-H
year, they set SMART goals for your club program. Our goals are
S.M.A.R.T. goals that stand for Specific, Measurable, Achievable,
Results-focused, and Time bound. So now that we’ve gotten off to a
good start, relaxed maybe over the holiday, and now look forward to
participating in your projects, I hope you will reflect on the SMART
goals you will apply to your projects and that club leaders will review
the SMART goals made in October.
If you want help with this process drop me an email at
[email protected] or call me at 920-674-7299.
One of my SMART goals will be to visit each club during my first
year, so invite me to a club meeting. With 30 clubs, that means 2-3
each month.

Weather Policy
It’s cold outside; I hope everyone is staying as warm
as they can. It is suggested that club leaders discuss
their club cancellation policy with members at their
January meetings. The policy for county meetings is
as follows.
1. Meetings supported by the county should be
cancelled by at least 3:30 pm the day of the
meeting by calling Bruce Jones or Kim Buchholz at
the Extension Office.
2. If time permits, a notice will go out to anyone who
might be affected by the cancellation via e-mail
and a note will be posted on the website. We will
make our best effort to directly contact those
who’ve signed up for an event.
3. If an event is cancelled during business hours, a
notice will go on the Extension Office main line at
920-674-7295.
Welcome New Families
We would like to welcome our new families to the
Jefferson County 4-H program. Please know that if
you have any questions or concerns we are here to
help. Please contact Bruce Jones at 920-674-7299.
I hope that our veteran families will take time out of
your meetings to make new members feel welcome
and at home. Maneuvering through the world of 4-H
can be difficult; please help them on their way.
New Family Dinner We would like to invite all new families (1-2 years of
4-H experience) to our New Family Dinner on January
31st at the Extension Office starting at 6:00 p.m.
Please call 920-674-7295 to register or email
[email protected] so that we can plan food
by January 30, 2017. This is a great way to learn
more about how the 4-H program works and answer
any questions you might have. A special letter will be
going out to new families inviting them to this event.
Leaders please encourage your members to attend. If
any seasoned 4-H families would like to help in
planning or presenting, please contact Bruce.

One thing you can do between now and the first

rule if there is a snow storm (three or more
inches/icy roads or blowing snow) that evening we will

Duck Creek At the November meeting of the Duck Creek 4-H
Club, members discussed buying a 4-H flag or a
pledge banner. We also talked about a community
service project we could do where we would make
crafts with clients at Saint Coletta’s. We also

discussed our club Christmas party. We will be doing
a white elephant gift exchange and adopting
Christmas Neighbors families. After the meeting we
had our club Halloween party. Club members
participated in different activities, including a
costume contest and Trick or Treating.

Mackenzie showed us her bow and told us that she
shoots for 4-H and is going to join the archery team
at FAMS. Addie showed us her remote control car
and all the neat tricks she can do with it. Ella brought
in her 1.5 year old dog and attempted to have it do
basic commands. Of course, the dog was more
interested in the kids!
Our next meeting will be on Monday December at 7
pm. Prior to the meeting we will do Christmas Caroling
around Hebron then come back for our meeting along
with cookies and hot chocolate. The club will also
make cards for vets and send them for the holidays.
The club has also decided to donate canned and non-
perishable goods to the Fort Atkinson Food Pantry in
the month of December.

cannot wait to meet new friends and learn together.

residents at Marquardt Manor and they will be
delivered at the Caroling meeting on December 12th.
Club officer Gabe Elsen and Jefferson County 4-H
leader Paul Elsen rang bells for the Salvation Army on
behalf of the Lucky Clovers on Friday November 25.
Club members are reminded that we will meet on
December 12 at Marquardt Manor to deliver
ornaments and sing for the residents.

Rock River The Rock River 4-H Club held its November meeting
on November 2, 2016 at Rockwell Elementary School.
During the meeting we talked about the craft night
that Mrs. Behm put together for our club. Members
carved foam pumpkins using a variety of patterns,
including a cow. Our club also haunted a part of the
Haumerson’s Pond Haunted Hike, and our theme was
Zombies.
In November, club members went to the officer
training at the Jefferson County Fair Park. We
learned how to better fulfil our jobs as officers. We
also participated in the Fort Atkinson Holiday Parade.
In December, our club rang bells for the Salvation
Army donation kettles at Festival Foods in Fort
Atkinson. Our December club meeting was held
December 7th. We had project talks from Mariah
Eichenberg, Bailey Behm and Kaitlyn Burke who talked
about fair projects they did last summer. After the
meeting, we held a gift exchange. It is a really fun
way our club celebrates Christmas with each other.
On December 27, our club will be putting on a talent
show for the residents at Black Hawk Senior
Residence in Fort Atkinson.

Stone School
The Stone School 4-H Club installed new officers at our fall banquet. They include: President Katherine Novak, Vice President Kirstin Novak, Secretary Hannah Lemke, Treasurer Elizabeth Katzman, Reporter Matthew Lucht, Sunshine Willson Jones, and Photographer Evan Mattrisch. During the
December meeting, we discussed the outcome of our Christmas tree sale. We also discussed the events we planned for the month. These events include: Christmas Caroling at Fairhaven Senior Services, Christmas Neighbors, and Salvation Army bell ringing. We also talked about our aluminum can fundraiser. The next meeting will be a bowling and pizza party at Hawk Bowl on the 7th of January.

Sullivan Stars Hello, I am the reporter for Sullivan Stars and I am
reporting on our meeting on December, 1st 2016. We
got information for Christmas Neighbors. We agreed
to forward 125 dollars for the food for the family we
are helping. To wrap our gifts we usually have a
wrapping party and we decided that it would be on
December 18th at 1:00 pm at the Sullivan Village Park
we would do this fun event. The topic of changing our
meeting date was brought up and this meeting we
voted on what we would change it to and the votes
came in and we are sticking with our usual meeting
day and time. Our meetings will be on the first
Thursday of every month at six-thirty pm. Feel free
if you would like to join us at the Sullivan Village Park
to come see what is going on in our club. Our last
thing before we adjourned the meeting was we made
suggestions for what we thought we could do for
community service activities and several of the club
members stepped up and shared their ideas.
- Nicholas Fischer, Reporter
Waterloo Wonder Stars Our club performed a community service project by
decorating downtown Waterloo with festive snowmen.
On November 30 and December 1, our club members
got together and painted plastic cut out snowmen. We
decorated them with hats and scarves and mittens
and will then zip tie them to the bases of street
lights downtown for the Holidays. This fun activity is
great for all ages.
