Jefferson County 4-H Family Newsletter
Volume XVIII, Issue 3 March 2018
Happy March!
As you all are probably aware, the 4-H Youth Development Educator
position within our office is currently vacant. The position was
approved to be refilled at the February University Extension Education
Committee meeting. Currently, Chrissy Wen, Area Director and the
Extension Education Committee are working to develop a job
description and obtain approval from the University to post the
position. This process will take some time. The position is expected to
be posted within the near future with hopes for a new educator to be
on board by Summer 2018.
Even with an educator vacancy, the 4-H program does not stop! We
appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work with the various
committees, events and programming that is on-going within the
County. LaVern Georgson, Agriculture Agent; Katelyn Broedlow and Kim
Buchholz are working together to make sure the Jefferson County
4-H program continues on as planned during this vacancy.
Thank you in advance for your assistance as we work together to serve
the youth of Jefferson County.
Weather Policy Wisconsin weather is
unpredictable! Club leaders please
discuss your club cancellation
policy with members. The policy for
county is as follows.
1. Meetings supported by the
county should be cancelled by at
least 3:30 pm on the meeting day
by calling 920-674-7295.
2. If time permits, a notice will go
out to anyone who might be
affected by the cancellation via
e-mail and a note will be posted
on the website. We will make our
best effort to directly contact
those who’ve signed up for an
event.
3. If an event is cancelled during
business hours, an outgoing
message will go on the office
answering machine at 920-674-

House Plants, Gardening & Native Wildflowers Thursday, March 22nd, 6:30pm-8pm at UWEX Office
We will introduce and review 4-H materials available for
the house plant and gardening projects. Think about
exhibits for the County Fair and answer questions. You
can share and ask questions about house plants you are
growing.
For your gardening project, we will plan and choose what
vegetables and flowers will grow best in Wisconsin and
make good Fair exhibits. Information is available on
seeds/plants, planting, and fair selections.
Please download and/or Print your copies of information
from the Learning Store (learningstore.uwex.edu) and
bring your questions. Look for these; A1653 Planting
Guide, A3383 Containers, A2935 Evaluating & Judging
Flowers & Indoor Plants and A3306 Exhibiting & Judging
Vegetables. These have the information that members
need to be informed about for their fair entries. You may
also click on the link and vie the pdf file.
Also print the pages from the Fair Book for Department
14 Plant & Soil Sciences, Department 15 Flowers, and
Department 17 Cloverbuds (if you have a Cloverbud in the
family) for the area in which you plan to exhibit. Put your
information in a folder for project reference. These
materials will be used as we discuss your project plans
and exhibits.
We can also talk about planting a wildflower garden to
help pollinators. If interested in creating a butterfly
garden check out the Native Plant Sale by the Land Trust
Network. See an order form and information about how
the sale helps Jefferson County on their website,
www.landtrustnetwork.org
Please bring a clean empty plastic gallon milk jug or a clear
clam shell deli container. We will do an early spring
planting experiment to take home.
Please RSVP to [email protected] by Monday, March
19th so materials will be available for all attending. Let's
have a learning and planning project evening for you!
Questions, Comments, and Suggestions are always
welcome. Feel free to contact Sharon Schweitzer at

Natural Sciences, Adventures &
Environmental Activities Saturday, March 17th, 9-11am, Exploring Nature.
(Rain date-Sunday, March 18th 1-3pm) Meet on the
west side of Dorothy Carnes Park. Take Radloff Lane
north off of Hwy 12, 1 mi west of the Hwy 26 bypass.
There is a sign for the park on Hwy 12.
Come to the park and find a Shamrock! Will your
Shamrock be a four leaf clover or a spring flower, a robin
or red-winged black bird, a muskrat or squirrel, clouds or
sunshine. Looking for all these Shamrocks we'll have the
opportunity to explore many of the natural science
project areas.
Ducks, geese and cranes may be migrating. You can watch
for them from the deck by the lake. Or if you hike
through the prairie or the woods you can watch for song
birds. While watching for birds or taking a hike, we may
be able to find early spring flowers, tracks, or other small
critters who have ventured out looking for spring food or
the warmth of the sun.

Looking for Leaders Board Members We are looking for Older Youth or Adult volunteers who
want to help the 4-H program as part of the Leaders
Association Board. We have five individuals whose terms
will be done. The group meets five times per year in
addition to the four Leaders Association meetings that are
held during August, October, March and May. So as part
of this group, you would have only 9 meetings per year.

being part of the board has really helped them to share
information with their clubs and get them more involved in
county happenings.
If you are interested in running please consider filling out
a Leaders Board Bio and send it to the UWEX Office by
Monday, April 16th. All applications will be reviewed at the
April Leader’s Board meeting & bios will be published in
the May 4-H Newsletter. The election will take place at

NEW FOR 2018! Wisconsin State Fair will implement a
new national certification program available for youth.
Completion of this informative and educational program,
“Youth for the Quality Care of Animals” (YQCA), will be
required for all youth who exhibit animal projects (Beef,
Dairy, Goats, Poultry, Rabbits, Sheep and Swine) at the
2018 Wisconsin State Fair Junior Shows. It replaces
Wisconsin’s Meat Animal Quality Assurance (MAQA)
program. Course content includes an age appropriate
module from each of the following program areas:
Animal Welfare (basic needs, proper animal
handling, biosecurity, etc.).
Food Safety (medications, medicated feeds,
withdrawal times, avoiding residue, etc.).
Character Education (ethics, goal setting, career
exploration, etc.).
YQCA certification is offered in two formats to meet
varied learning styles and active schedules:
• Online – Fee: $12/exhibitor/year Available 24/7 at
www.yqca.org -OR• Face-to-Face/Trainer-Led – Fee:
$3/exhibitor/year To find a list of face-to-face/trainer-
led sessions in Wisconsin.
See separate article on MAP and YQCA.
Under the appropriate age in “Course List” choose
“Instructor-Led Training”. A drop-down box will list all
current available options for Wisconsin. Both
certification types (Online and Face-to-Face) must be
paid online with a credit card. The nominal course fees
($12/$3) ensures the course content/learning platform
stays current.
Annual certification should take approximately 60
minutes. After viewing each module, the exhibitor must
successfully pass a quiz which demonstrates content
mastery. Youth wishing to exhibit in the 2018 Wisconsin
State Fair Junior Shows must provide his/her YQCA
certification number when entering by the entry deadline
on June 6, 2018. Youth who do not provide a YQCA
certification number, or did not pass the YQCA modules
for the current calendar year will not be eligible to
participate in the 2018 Wisconsin State Fair Junior
Shows. If you have any questions on this exciting new
program, please email [email protected].
We look forward to seeing you at the
2018 Wisconsin State Fair, August 2 – 12!

Farmington All Stars This month the Farmington All Stars are doing very
interesting stuff. Last month our club collected donations
from people for the humane society. We put bins in stores
throughout Jefferson County. At the February meeting
we brought in all of the money from the fundraiser. We
are very thankful for all of the donations! We hope that
we helped the Humane Society! All of the members are
very excited about the animal projects starting, they are
so passionate about their animals and hobbies! We are
also having a baby blanket tying day, this is where we make
baby blankets for the Fort Atkinson hospital. We usually
get a letter back from them saying that they have been
gone in a couple days! We love helping the Fort Atkinson
hospital and its fun tying blankets. That is what the
Farmington All Stars did and are doing this month!

Ideal Clever Clovers The Ideal Clever Clovers had a meeting before the
Special Emphasis Speaking contest. We met at 4:30 and
helped the Rock River Clovers setup for the
contest. We listened to all the speeches and they were
great. Everyone at the meeting was able to select the
winning poster. We cleaned up the room and were able
to go home. Our next meeting will be March 17 at the
Fort Library.

Stone School In January members enjoyed our annual bowling party at
Hawk Bowl in Whitewater. Everyone donated to the food
pantry.
In February we had our regular meeting and we had a quiz
to win a 4-H winter hat. Questions were “What is the 4-
H moto?”; “What do the 4 "H"s stand for?”; “What is the
4-H slogan?” and a few more all about 4-H. The next
meeting is March 6th. Thanks!

Rock River Clovers
The Rock River Clovers held its February meeting on
February 7th at Rockwell Elementary School in Fort
Atkinson. We had project talks by Bailey Behm, Trace
Hadler and Jillian Wangerin. Bailey Behm talked about her
rendezvous outfit that she made and is taking to the fair.
It was very realistic and nicely made. She demonstrated
it for us by putting it on for everyone. Trace Hadler
shared his Special Emphasis Speech for the contest that
was nicely done. Jillian Wangerin brought in the slime she
made with her sister and is taking it to the fair. She also
shared tips on how to make the slime the best way.
In New Business the Special Emphasis posters and
speeches were due on February 9th. There is the MAP
camp on February 24th which is on a Saturday. For
everyone that is wanting to change their projects that
has to be done by March 1st. Our group had a sledding day
on the 11th at the Bos’s house. They had sledding, ice
skating and curling! We are having a club fundraiser on
April 14th at Festival Foods and May 5th at Pernats.
