HELPING YOU

GET THE JOB DONE!

Military organizations operate in every climate and place on earth, in the most extreme condi-

tions. If something goes wrong, even in the most remote locations, parts and service needs to

be immediate in order to maintain tempo and reduce vulnerability.

Sustainability of JCB military machines is achieved through JCB’s understanding of the unique

logistic requirements of military organizations and by our integrated network of over 1,000

dealers in 150 countries. Our military machines share several common components with our

commercial machines securing parts availability at local JCB depots. Reinforcing our dealer

network is JCB’s Global Manufacturing resource with facilities on four continents and the JCB

World Parts Center capable of world wide parts distribution within 24 hours. Service support

is achieved through JCB’s global dealer network. Their unique understanding of local operat-

ing conditions and their JCB trained technicians backstopped by a specialized military products

support team insures swift, accurate and enabling service support.

From the searing heat and sand of the desert, to the humidity of the jungle, through frigid ice

fields, at sea level or at altitude, you can rely on JCB parts and service support anytime, any-

where and under any operating condition. With JCB you are never isolated from support.

JCB | MILITARY PRODUCTS High Mobility Range Brochure

Thank you for taking the time to read about JCB.

I hope you get some feel for our company, our prod-

ucts and the great people that we have.

My father, Joseph Cyril Bamford, started this compa-

ny just over sixty years ago at the end of World War II. These were tough times. Through

sheer hard work, JCB has grown to become the fourth largest manufacturer of construc-

tion equipment in the world.

JCB is now a global company operating in over 150 countries, but the challenge for us is

to stay close to our customers as we grow. Thankfully, JCB is well positioned to do so.

We are a privately-owned family business which means we do not have to answer to the

stock market–just our customers! We try to minimize bureaucracy and aim to be quick at

making decisions. Above all, we never forget that our customers pay our wages.

Sir Anthony Bamford

CHAIRMAN, JCB

JCB has been associated with the military since day one, over

60 years ago. Our founder, Joseph Cyril Bamford (Mr. JCB),

designed his first products from surplus military equipment

which he built into tipping trailers. That was 1945.

Today, JCB has supplied over 50 military organizations across the world with unique machines,

designed specifically for their needs. We task our design engineers with a common theme–relia-

bility, maintainability, transportability, mobility, survivability and of course speed. We build our

machines to withstand even the toughest conditions. Joseph Cyril Bamford used to say that suc-

cess comes from having a clear ‘sense of urgency’. Mobility is the essence of warfare and work-

ing hard to ‘help you get the job done’ is the essence of JCB.

I am delighted to present to you our military product range.

THE HIGH-SPEED, HIGH-MOBILITY HMEE-1

THE HIGH-SPEED HMRTF . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

THE HIGH-SPEED HMVRT . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

THE HIGH MOBILITY HMF . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

THE HIGH MOBILITY HMUV . . . . . . . . . . . .

JCB’s High Mobility Engineer Excavator Type 1 (HMEE-1)

is capable of self deploying with its two man crew at road

speeds in excess of 55 mph.

The High Mobility Rough Terrain Forklift (HMRTF) is the

world’s first and only high speed, high mobility telescopic

handler, capable of self deployment at speeds above 50 mph.

The High Mobility Variable Reach Truck’s (HMVRT) patent-

ed front end design allows the operator to efficiently lift up

to 10,000 lbs.

The revolutionary JCB High Mobility Fastrac (HMF) is a fully

suspended, highly productive utility vehicle.perfect for a whole

host of military applications.

The JCB High Mobility Utility Vehicle (HMUV) is a vehicle

designed to meet the requirements of close support operations

and at a high speed, with both operational and tactical mobility.

High Mobility Solutions

JCB’s relationship with the military goes back to 1984,

when the British Army and RAF purchased nearly

1,000 JCB 410M machines. It was a version of our

civilian loading shovel, a relatively unsophisticated

machine, capable of around 30 mph, without

suspension or a sophisticated braking system.

Since then we have built up significant experience and

expertise in this highly specialized field and now we are

proud to introduce our range of five purpose-built high

mobility military machines: the JCB HMEE -

backhoe loader, the HMVRT and HMRTF

- telescopic handlers, and the HMF

and HMUV - utility vehicles.

The range has been developed specifically to provide

logistics and engineering solutions for the military. All

five machines benefit from full suspension and ABS

braking, enabling them to travel at speeds of over

50 mph (80 kph) both on the road and cross-country.

They have been designed with operational mobility in

mind; all are transportable in a C-130 and the HMRTF

can also be moved in a standard ISO 20 ft container.

The wide range of JCB attachments mean that these

machines offer maximum versatility and minimum fuss,

whether digging, lifting, loading, unloading or carrying.

But we don’t just excel in our products. When your

machines might be deployed at short

notice anywhere in the world,

you need to know that there’s a global

logistics reach and service to give you the support you

need wherever you are. JCB’s network of over 1,000

dealer depots in 150 countries, and our state-of-the-art

World Parts Center ensures that our customer service

is, quite simply, the best in the business.

Built specifically for the US military as a replacement

for their Small Emplacement Excavator, the JCB High

Mobility Engineer Excavator (HMEE) is the result of

a three-year program of design, development and test-

ing to meet stringent performance criteria. Originally,

JCB and one other manufacturer were briefed on the

development project for this specialist machine, but it

was the JCB team which won the US Army produc-

tion contract in 2005.

The army’s typical road speed requirement is 55 mph

(88 kph) . To travel safely on what may be public roads

at this speed requires: more powerful engines, truck-

type transmissions matched to the power units,

sophisticated suspension systems for dual on- and off-

highway use, and ABS braking and steering systems to

comply with highway regulations for safety at speed in

all conditions. The JCB HMEE meets all of these require-

ments and more.

It is a unique military machine that takes its suspension

and transmission technology from the JCB Fastrac and

combines it with world-leading JCB backhoe loader

technology. The result is a backhoe loader capable of

55 mph (88 kph) on the road, but that also offers

superb off-highway performance. A 12 ton, 4-wheel

drive, 4-wheel steer machine with a 6.7-liter diesel

engine, the HMEE can lift more than 4,400 lbs and dig

to a depth of almost 13 ft. It is designed to be air

transportable by Hercules C-130 aircraft, and

armoured cab versions are also available.

High Mobility Engineer Excavator - HMEE

All in all, the JCB HMEE is an incredible piece of

equipment that, thanks to its breakthrough technology,

high speed and superb mobility, will revolutionize the

capability of military engineers.

The world’s first dedicated telescopic handler capable

of high sustained speed, the JCB High Mobility Rough

Terrain Forklift (HMRTF) is designed for unloading and

loading standard ISO containers on the ground or

mounted on a flat rack from within. Hence its compact

overall dimensions. Also known as the JCB 523M, the

HMRTF has been developed specifically to meet strin-

gent British Army specifications. It uses proven JCB

telescopic handler technology and is the ideal

in-theatre materials handler.

The JCB HMRTF provides excellent cross-country

mobility at high speed and achieves an impressive 55 mph

(88 kph) on the road. Fully roadworthy, it features a

6-speed fully automatic and programmable gearbox,

selectable 2-or 4-wheel drive, power-assisted front-

wheel steering, hydraulic rear-wheel steering and tailor-

made ABS, all fitted as standard. Add all-round suspension

and you have the perfect expeditionary logistics vehicle.

The machine has three operating modes: in travel mode

it is fully suspended for on- and off-roading; in work

raised mode the front suspension is raised and locked

for improved visibility when load handling; and in work

lowered mode the suspension is lowered and locked for

accessing containers, where the 0.6 mt front/center

side-shift fork frame allows you to place or recover stan-

dard 4,000 lb palletized loads from either side.

The JCB HMRTF has a lift capacity of 5,000 lbs up to

a height of 17 ft. Its low-profile design enables it to cor-

ner and maneuver on all terrains smoothly and

swiftly, as well as making it easily transportable without

preparation in a C-130. It can be underslung under a

Chinook and transported in a 20 ft ISO container.

With the JCB Quickhitch system, you are able to switch

between front-end attachments with minimum fuss for

maximum versatility. It’s the perfect solution for moving

The revolutionary JCB High Mobility Fastrac (HMF) is

a fully suspended, highly productive utility vehicle.

Capable of safe travel at high speeds, both on- and off-

road, what makes this machine so unique is the ability

to achieve road speeds of over 55 mph (88 kph) and

be equally effective off-road.

The HMF is a universal logistics support vehicle

specifically designed to work effectively with an

extensive range of attachments, including backhoes and

blades, so its potential for military use is enormous.

Key to its performance is the full suspension system,

which offers the ability to travel at speed with both

control and perfect weight distribution. This combination

of vibration-free ride and one of the most comfortable

cabs ensures operator fatigue is reduced to a new low.

The RAF use the Military Fastrac to tow Harriers and

other aircraft from hides for operations and, thanks to

the ‘easy-ride’ suspension, for towing sensitive loads

such as bombs and munitions. They can also be used

for high-speed snow clearance of runways, store yards

and depots, salt spreading and de-icing. In fact, some

RAF Fastracs have been winterized for operation at

temperatures as low as -35°.

Every Fastrac model can haul over 26.4 tons gross

train weight at 55 mph (88 kph). ABS braking means

these machines can stop safely with no risk of jack-

knifing. A two-man, low-profile cab offers excellent all-

round visibility and ensures Hercules C-130 air

transportability. And ancillary equipment (tanks, pallets,

ULCs etc) can be carried on the rear-deck.

Whichever way you look at it, this high-speed, highly

mobile, logistic utility vehicle is the perfect choice for

a whole host of military applications.

The JCB High Mobility Utility Vehicle (HMUV) is a

brand new concept, which is designed specifically

to provide the capability to meet the close support

needs of tactical level operations.

A genuine utility vehicle, the JCB HMUV is able to

provide a range of high speed and high mobility

capabilities as a load carrier, a personnel carrier, or as

a platform for the carriage of modular systems such as a

Command Post, gun limber or Air Defence vehicle.

The inclusion of a capable hydraulic system facilitates

the use of a wide range of attachments, while power-

take-off is available as an option to provide power to

hand-held attachments.

A highly capable system, the HMUV is based on the

well proven JCB Fastrac technology. Powered by

a 250 hp Cummins Euro IV engine and with a 6x4

Powershift gearbox the HMUV is capable of road

speeds of 65 mph (110 kph) with similar cross country

performance. The ergonomically designed cab is

designed for two soldiers to operate effectively in

comfort but is easily altered to carry three.

The JCB HMUV is fitted with a two level suspension;

the top level to enable its high mobility, the lowest to

enable transportation in a C-130. With no preparation

required, it can wade through water up to 4.9 ft deep

due to all induction, exhaust and cooling being above

the wading line. Off road, the 4-wheel drive soft-

engage differential locks mean that it is capable

of scaling a 1:1 slope. It is genuinely highly mobile.

As a load carrier the JCB HMUV is able to carry

five tons while simultaneously towing a five ton, braked

trailer. The standard load-bed capacity provides room

for four standard palettes. The JCB HMUV can also be

fitted with a second crew cab allowing a total of six

soldiers to be carried as well as two ammunition

containers.

The JCB HMUV is a unique vehicle designed to meet

the stringent requirements of close support operations

and to do so at high speed, with both operational and

tactical mobility.

The entire family of JCB military products are roughly based on

similar platforms and utilize similar components. The high

speed, high mobility approach eliminates the need for a prime

mover, trailer and supporting personnel for all of the JCB mili-

tary machines releasing those assets for utilization elsewhere in

the theater of operation.

JCB military machines can function independently or together

as a unit to complete a multitude of engineering tasks. The

interoperability and modularity of the JCB military product fami-

ly of high speed, high mobility machines significantly reduces the

logistic footprint of a force while simultaneous increasing its agili-

ty and capabilities.

JCB ‘s commitment to quality is evidenced across the entire

family of military products. Reliability is built into JCB military

machines through the use of redundant systems and on board

diagnostic/prognostic components. JCB’s vast knowledge of

commercial technology and manufacturing process, along with the

utilization of materials that provide quantum increases in strength,

reduction in weight and are non-erosive and non-corrosive, lever-

age the reliability effect and raise the Mean Time Between Essential

Function Failure on all JCB military machines.

Integrated Logistics

Cummins 6-Cylinder Engine features direct injec-

tion, ideally matched power/torque curves, fuel effi-

cient and single fuel compliant.
