ÉDITOJazz à Vienne prend de la hauteur et s’installe en résidence à 2 300 mètres d’altitude pour la troisième édition du festival Jazz à Val Thorens, du vendredi 10 au lundi 13 avril 2020 !Jazz à Val Thorens 2020, c’est quatre jours de musique avec dix-huit concerts entre midi et minuit : une programmation de stars internationales, des concerts en accès libre, les après-midis DJ, apéros-ski, les Jazz Mix en after, mais aussi le spectacle jeune public et l’exposition autour de la vie de Django Reinhardt.Cette troisième édition de Jazz à Val Thorens se veut encore plus exceptionnelle en permettant l’accès libre à la programmation sur les quatre jours du festival. Aucun billet ne sera vendu. Le public pourra accéder aux concerts gratuitement en accès libre ou sur invitation (à gagner sur le site jazzavalthorens.com ; sélection via un tirage au sort). À la fin de chaque concert les spectateurs auront la possibilité de partager un moment d’échange et de convivialité avec l’artiste, un véritable moment privilégié ! Django Reinhardt is a born legend. He, whose name means “I awake”, was born twice. A first time in the snow in 1910, to a travelling family settled at Liberchies, Belgium, for the winter. A second time during the fall of 1928 in Saint-Ouen, near Paris, when his left hand was mutilated in the fire of his caravan. Scriptwriter Salva Rubio and artist Efa have written a graphic novel retracing Django’s youth and will exhibit the plates from the book in Jazz à Val Thorens. Come and dive into the passion and tenacity of a man who always considered himself as the world’s greatest guitar player.

The Mississippi Moaners are two of the members of Lyon-based soul band The Buttshakers. The guitar and vocal duo delves for inspiration into the deepest roots of African American music. Travel with them to the land of soul and rhythm ’n’ blues, through covers of Patsy Cline, Sam Cooke, Howlin Wolf and Ray Charles, to name but a few!

From Friday 10 to Monday 13 of April 2020, Jazz à Vienne flies high and sets up home at an altitude of 2.300 meters, for the 3rd edition of Jazz à Val Thorens festival!

Jazz à Val Thorens 2020 is 4 days of music, with 18 concerts scheduled from noon to midnight. The programme includes international artists, free access concerts, afternoon DJ sets and pre-dinner concerts, “Jazz Mix” late night events, but also a show designed for young audience and an exhibition on the life of Django Reinhardt.

This third edition of Jazz à Val Thorens will be exceptional, with free access to all concerts during the 4 days of festival. Not a single ticket will be sold. You can come to the concerts for free or with an invitation (win your invitation on jazzavalthorens.com – selection by drawing lots). At the end of each concert, you will be able to exchange words with the artist and share a few moments of conviviality! This sense of closeness adds to the unique experience of the festival.

Django Reinhardt est une légende. Mais Django ? « celui qui réveille » ? est aussi né deux fois. Une première fois dans la neige, durant l’hiver 1910 dans une famille de nomades stationnée à Liberchies, en Belgique. La seconde à Saint-Ouen, près de Paris, à l’automne 1928, quand l’incendie de sa caravane lui mutila la main gauche. Le scénariste Salva Rubio et le dessinateur Efa qui ont consacré une bande dessinée à la jeunesse du musicien prodige exposeront à Jazz à Val Thorens les planches de l’ouvrage qui mettent en scène la passion et l’obstination de celui qui s’est toujours considéré comme le plus grand guitariste du monde.

Le trio du batteur Zaza Desiderio est composé des musiciens très inspirés : Michel Molines à la contrebasse et Rémi Ploton au piano. Les titres qu’ils ont enregistrés produisent bien plus qu’une belle rencontre de sonorités, une musique intense où les relais s’opèrent avec fluidité, gardant la complicité, la sensibilité et la virtuosité. En live, ces trois artistes partagent l’envie de faire ressentir aux auditeurs l’intimité d’une musique qui se construit devant lui. Jazz, contemporains, latins, les titres sont bien choisis et prouvent que la musique n’a pas de frontière. Une formation de très haute qualité.

Emmenés par la voix envoûtante et l’énergie de la séduisante et charismatique riot girl Ciara Thompson, The Buttshakers nous délivrent une soul chaude et crue qui lorgne sur le blues et les rythmes addictifs qu’ils affectionnent tant. Always on the lookout for musical gems, he has been spinning all over the world, to present surprising and spicy sets and display his scratching skills. Supergombo is a superchild of the cultural mix made in France; yet they may also have inherited their afrofunk quality from the Tout-Puissant Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and the Headhunters. Their music feeds on Senegalese mbalax, Congolese soukous, American funk and international jazz. In other words, sounds that are from anywhere but here. Exploring Bikutsi rhythms (Faraphonium) as well as Mandika scales (NâKuima), bathed in blazing groove and iridescent colours, Supergombo performs an African repertoire, yet openly draws infl uences from Western, Eastern, West Indies and Far East music!

Léon Phal is accompanied by a new generation of talented musicians: his sidekick and childhood friend Zacharie Ksyk on trumpet and 2018 Jazz Mag Revelation Gauthier Toux on piano. Their sound refl ects the cultural diversity of today’s jazz. In 2019, Léon Phal won the Jazz Up contest by Nancy Jazz Pulsations and RéZZo Focal contest by Jazz à Vienne. The East. A region my grand-parents had to run away from. I was long allergic to its culture of excess, sugar and passion. Up until that special reunion, around a piano: “Would you mind playing something Armenian?” My fi ngers tentatively played a half-remembered melody from my grand-mother… “It reminds me of Satie…” And here I am, exploring new sound territories, surrounded by Iranian sacred drums, an Armenian duduk, a Turkish cellist, a Syrian singer, Alaturka rhythms… Here I am, pushing back mental boundaries to draw the outline of a lost paradise, between Vienna and Samarkand, looking for some sparkles of spleen, to eventually try and recollect – for one night – the soul of my ancestors.

Born in Martinique, Marc Cabrera is one of the best gifted Martinican pianists of his generation. His outstanding skills on the piano have received great acclaim on many regional venues but also during festivals in Martinique. Through his compositions and arrangements, Marc Cabrera honours his Martinican roots and culture and pays tribute to the great names of jazz music.

David Walters, eternal explorer of Creole cultures, comes back with a new album inspired by New-York, the city where all cultures converge and mix. After his adventure with the album Nola is Calling recorded in the New-Orleans with members of the Black Indian community, the French producer and musician sets up home on the East Coast, to offer a brilliant Soleil Kréyol. A way to retrace the footsteps of his grand-father, a West Indian tap dancer and cook, who once migrated to New-York.

L’Orient, mes grands-parents en furent chassés. Longtemps je fus allergique à ses excès, son sucre, sa passion. Jusqu’aux retrouvailles, autour d’un piano : « Pourriez-vous me jouer quelque chose d’arménien ? » Une vague mélodie de ma grand-mère égrenée d’un doigt hésitant... « On dirait du Satie... » Et me voilà parcourant de nouveaux territoires sonores, armé de tambours sacrés iraniens, d’un violoncelliste turc, d’une chanteuse syrienne, d’un duduk arménien, de rythmes Alaturka, repoussant les frontières mentales pour dessiner les contours d’un paradis perdu, entre Vienne et Samarkhande, à la recherche d’éclats de spleen, pour retrouver, le temps d’un concert, l’âme de mes ancêtres.

Né à la Martinique, Marc Cabrera est aujourd’hui l’un des pianistes martiniquais les plus doués de sa génération. Véritable surdoué du piano, ses compétences sont appréciées sur de nombreuses scènes régionales mais aussi lors de festivals en Martinique. À travers ses compositions et arrangements, il honore les grands noms du jazz en s’imprégnant de ses racines et de sa culture martiniquaise.

Éternel explorateur des cultures créoles, David Walters revient avec un nouvel album inspiré par New York, ville aux confl uences des métissages du monde. Après son aventure au sein du projet Nola is Calling enregistré à la Nouvelle-Orléans avec des membres de la communauté des Black Indians, le producteur et musicien français pose à présent ses valises sur la côte Est américaine, pour y faire briller un Soleil Kréyol. Une manière de retracer les pas de son grand-père, danseur de claquettes et cuisinier antillais, qui un jour a migré vers New York.

The “dynamic duo” will present a special workshop to go through the basics of beatmaking. Join them for an interactive show, and learn everything you need to know about a sampler, with some anecdotes about the history of hip-hop.

HIP-HOP IS BEAUTIFULL’animateur-digger-chroniqueur Alpha du média LEGROSTASDEZIK et le DJ-beatmaker-globetrotteur Zajazza (Sampling is beautiful, Jazz Cuisine), se griment en Guy Lux et Léon Zitrone sur le spectacle Hip-Hop is beautiful. Le « dynamic duo » proposera de travailler les fondamentaux du beatmaking dans cet atelier spécifi que. Sur fond de spectacle ludique, vous allez tout découvrir sur l’utilisation d’un sampleur avec des allusions à l’histoire du hip-hop.
