Yuli Coastal Culture – Presentation Night

I was disappointed not to be able to attend the Yuli

Presentation Evening last Wednesday at our school. The

evening acknowledged the huge success of the Yuli Coastal

Culture project this year, involving Aboriginal students from

all seven Coastal Learning Community schools. The aim of

the project has been to reinforce the pride that students feel

in their Aboriginal heritage, and to draw on this pride in

planning their educational and post school career goals.

Throughout the year, students have been involved in a range

of cultural and leadership activities. One of these has led to

a cultural exchange between our Aboriginal students and

students from the Maori speaking Kura Kaupapa School in

New Zealand. The Maori students have celebrated this

relationship by presenting Coastal Learning Community

schools with a commemorative bowl (pictured) which is

proudly displayed in the Kingscliff High School foyer.

Many thanks to teachers from all seven CLC schools, and in

particular Christine Marshall, Principal of Fingal Head Public

School, and our own Dan Matthais, Head Teacher

Administration at Kingscliff High School.

Congratulations Alyssa Mackenzie

Alyssa Mackenzie of Year 11 is certainly keeping herself

busy, beginning her HSC studies this term, again attending

the Schools Spectacular in Sydney as a performer, and now

also being selected to participate in the National Schools

Constitutional Convention in Canberra over March 15 to 17

next year. This follows on from her highly successful

participation in the NSW Schools Constitutional Convention

at NSW Parliament House in Sydney earlier this month.

Well done, Alyssa.

CAPA Nights

Once again, I’m looking forward to attending this term’s

CAPA nights, complete with exceptional food marketta in the

main quad, which audience members can enjoy before the

show and during intermission. CAPA nights are without doubt

the highpoint in the school’s calendar in combining a great

showcase for student talent, not only as performers, but as

caterers, event organisers, backstage crew, sound

technicians and publicity officers, but also as a great evening

for our broader school community.

Many thanks as always to Mrs Boyd, her amazing CAPA

faculty and the many other teachers who lend a hand in

making the nights a success.

Primary School Visitors

Last week we held our second annual Year 5 taster day,

hosting students from all six of our Coastal Learning

Community primary schools. The day happily coincided with

our regular Japanese lunch (Obento) day, giving our guests

the added bonus of a taste of Japanese culture which has

always been a strong component of our broader school

culture.

Many thanks to Mr Smith for his organisation of this highly

successful day, along with so many of our teachers who

provided “sample” high school lessons. The feedback from

students has been extremely positive, no doubt leaving a

great many of them looking forward already to their time at

Kingscliff High School.

We look forward to welcoming our incoming Year 7 for 2017

(the current Year 6 from across our CLC partner schools) for

their Orientation Day next Tuesday under the very capable

leadership of their Year Adviser, Mrs Karen Levi.

Primary School Visits

I am also looking forward to visiting most of our CLC partner

schools over the last few weeks of term for their student

presentation ceremonies, beginning with Pottsville Beach PS

and the ringing of the bell next week, followed by Cudgen PS

next Wednesday evening.

Wishing everyone a great week on the Tweed Coast, as we

prepare to launch into summer!

Netball Knockout

On Thursday 17 November, Kingscliff High's Junior netball

team competed in a knockout competition. The competition

consisted of teams from Tweed Heads to Ballina. The girls

did extremely well on the day. The team played well and

showed great sportsmanship throughout the day winning

two out of three games. I'd like to congratulate the girls and

thank them for their commitment at training and high spirits.

Lets try for three out of three wins next year girls!- Miss Fitz

North Coast Aboriginal Education Awards

Family, friends and colleagues gathered recently at

Mullumbimby High School, to celebrate with the recipients

of the inaugural North Coast Aboriginal Education Awards.

The awards highlighted the achievements of students, staff

and community members in a variety of fields from

academic studies to leadership, sports and the performing

arts. I am very excited that students at our school were

nominated and have been successful. Congratulations to:

Trinity Ella – Award for

Outstanding Achievement in

Sport.

Letisha Stirling – Award for

Outstanding Student

Participation

Talah Daley – Student

Leadership Award

The Commanders Active Citizen Program The Tweed Byron’s Local Area Commands developed a

leadership program for suitable candidates that identify with

their Aboriginal heritage. The schools that were involved in

the program included Tweed River High, Banora Point High

and also Kingscliff High. The identified students that were

nominated to participate in the ‘The Commanders Active

Citizen Program’ was Chilli Sirrus and Isaac Williams. The

program aimed at improving communication between local

Koori youths and Police. It also provided an education and

awareness of the NSW Police Force Aboriginal Strategic

Direction Plan 2014 – 2017. A strong underlying theme

throughout this program was the concept of being an ‘Active

Citizen’ and this was explored via field visits to organisations

and agencies that manage and coordinate volunteers.

The formal presentation night was held at the PCYC on the

22 November and was a complete success. Both Chilli and

Isaac were the only two students selected as mentors to

further support the program in 2017.

School Stream

With one of our strategic directions being effective

communication and celebration of success, Kingscliff High

School now has our very own ‘app.’ Parents and carers with

students in the CLC primary schools may already be aware

of School Stream and can now add Kingscliff High School to

their schools on the app. There are some information pages

attached for those who are not familiar with the app. The

information includes download instructions and information

on how to use the app.

Kingscliff High School is very excited to be able to use this

technology to increase communication to our community! As

the usage progresses, so too will the services on the app.

Some of these already include: an events page which is

syncehed with our school calendar, links to our social media

pages and website, year group and faculty specific pages,

newsletters, sports pages, careers and alerts.

Once you have downloaded the app and added our school

you will need the code: k1ngysp1r1t to access our content.

Year 5 Get a Taste of Life at Kingscliff High School On 22 of November the Coastal Learning Community came together to give Year 5 students a ‘taste’ of the high school experience

on offer at Kingscliff High School. Year 5 students from Fingal Head, Cudgen, Bogangar, Kingscliff and Pottsville Beach Primary

schools joined as a cohort in the hall at Kingscliff High School for their first glimpse of what entering high school will be like.

Students met Transition Coordinator Mr Wayde Smith and Year 7 2018 Adviser, Miss Rebecca Robson before being mixed into

groups for a tour of their future high school. Students were able to explore the specialist teaching areas on offer at Kingscliff High

School, with many students excited about the learning they will engage with in these spaces.

All students had a fantastic time, with some wishing they could “skip Year 6 and come here instead”. Special thanks to Mr Smith

and all the amazing KHS staff who donated their free periods to share these learning experiences with our 2018 cohort. Thankyou

also to all the staff from across the Coastal Learning Community staff that accompanied students on the day.

The Coastal Learning Community will continue to come together in 2017 as we prepare these amazing young students for their

entry to Kingscliff High School.
