Japan & Indiana • Indiana presently has fifteen Sister City relationships with Japan, including a Sister State-Prefecture relationship with the Prefecture of Tochigi. • Indiana’s most famous attraction, the Indy 500, made its mark in Japan, when Indy car racing was established at the Twin-Ring Track in Motegi, Tochigi Prefecture. • Eli Lilly and Company has one of our oldest business relationships with Japan, spanning over one hundred years. Japan in Indiana: Began at our educational institutions • Earlham College’s first Japanese student graduated with a degree in math in 1893, and Ester Rhoads (Earlham’s Class of 1917) was a tutor to the Crown Prince of Japan. • In the early 1900’s, a Japanese student who was educated at the IU Law School became the first Japanese ever to be admitted to the U. S. Bar. • Mr. Izumi Nasu enrolled at DePauw University in 1877. In the mid-1870’s it was a Greencastle native, John Ing, who went to Japan and first introduced apples using western style cultivation techniques. • Presently, over 100 high schools in the state offer Japanese language courses. Missing their culture and the company of other Japanese, some of these women later joined together and took up the hobby of Japanese folk or “Minyo” dancing. When the International Festival of Indianapolis was formed as part of the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976, one of the ethnic groups formed was the Minyo dancers group, which later developed into the Minyo Club of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Minyo Dancers. • Born January 1977 • Races full-time in the Indy Car Series for A.J. The Minyo Dancers

World War II brought a special group of Japanese to Indiana – women who married soldiers and other Americans stationed in Japan, and then moved to Indiana in the 1950s, often to Fort Benjamin Harrison and Camp Atterbury and then throughout the state. Missing their culture and the company of other Japanese, some of these women later joined together and took up the hobby of Japanese folk or “Minyo” dancing.

When the International Festival of Indianapolis was formed as part of the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976, one of the ethnic groups formed was the Minyo dancers group, which later developed into the Minyo Club of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Minyo Dancers.
