SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY – 9:45 AM

STUDY OF THE BOOK OF 1, 2, & 3 JOHN JOHN CALLS FOLLOWERS OF JESUS TO SHARE IN GOD’S OWN LIFE AND LOVE BY DEVOTING THEMSELVES TO LOVING ONE ANOTHER. WRITTEN BY JOHN, THE ELDER TO HOUSE CHURCH BELIEVERS, 1 JOHN, 2 JOHN, AND 3 JOHN ECHO THE GOSPEL OF JOHN. THEY EMPHASIZE THAT GOD IS LIGHT AND LOVE AND EVERY TRUE BELIEVER WILL DEMONSTRATE GOD’S LIGHT AND LOVE. EACH BOOK ALSO ADDRESSES DECEIVERS, TEACHERS WHO NO LONGER ACKNOWLEDGE THAT JESUS IS THE MESSIAH OR SON OF GOD BUT SPREAD FEAR AND DIVISION AMONG BELIEVERS. ALL LEGITIMATE TEACHERS WILL SHARE THE TRUTH ABOUT JESUS AND THE CROSS, LOVE OTHERS SACRIFICIALLY AND SPREAD LOVE AND LIGHT RATHER THAN FEAR. HE ALSO REMINDS BELIEVERS TO WELCOME TRUE MISSIONARIES WHO TEACH THE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS AND LOVE OTHERS. THEY SHOULD NOT WELCOME DECEIVERS OR MAKE IDOLS OF ANYTHING THAT EXALTS ITSELF IN GOD’S PLACE.

WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY – 6:30 PM STUDY OF THE BOOK OF 1 & 2 SAMUEL

GOD’S GRACE IN 1 SAMUEL IS EXEMPLIFIED BY SAMUEL AS A TYPE OF JESUS, SINCE HE IS A PROPHET, PRIEST AND KING. HIS IMPORTANCE AS GOD’S REPRESENTATIVE IS SIMILAR TO THAT OF MOSES, FOR HE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE CONTINUITY OF THE COVENANT DURING THE TRANSITION FROM THE RULE OF JUDGES TO THE REIGN OF KINGS. IN THIS STUDY WE SEE HOW GOD CONTINUES TO REMAIN FAITHFUL, EVEN WHEN THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL DO NOT. THEIR KING, SAUL, MAKES SEVERAL MISTAKES AND ANGERS THE LORD, BUT THE LORD RAISES UP FOR ISRAEL A NEW KING, DAVID. THIS STUDY WILL SHOW HOW GOD’S KINGDOM WAS ESTABLISHED AND DESIGNED, GIVING US A CLEARER PICTURE OF HOW WE SHOULD LIVE AS GOD’S SUBJECTS UNDER HIS REIGN.

THURSDAY JOHN KNOX BIBLE STUDY – 10:00 AM

STUDY OF THE BOOK OF MATTHEW MATTHEW PRESENTS HIS THEME IN THE FIRST VERSE: JESUS AS THE FULFILLMENT OF PROPHECY AND OF ISRAEL’S EXPECTATION. MATTHEW’S MAIN PURPOSE IS TO PROVE TO HIS JEWISH READERS THAT JESUS IS THEIR MESSIAH. HE DOES THIS PRIMARILY BY SHOWING HOW JESUS IN HIS LIFE AND MINISTRY FULFILLED THE O T SCRIPTURES. AS A FORMER TAX COLLECTOR (ALSO CALLED “LEVI”), MATTHEW WAS QUALIFIED TO WRITE AN ACCOUNT OF JESUS LIFE AND TEACHINGS. A TAX COLLECTOR OF THAT DAY MUST KNOW GREEK, AND BE A LITERATE, WELL-ORGANIZED MAN. SOME THINK THAT MATTHEW WAS THE “RECORDER” AMONG THE DISCIPLES AND TOOK NOTES OF JESUS’ TEACHING. WE MIGHT SAY THAT WHEN MATTHEW FOLLOWED JESUS, HE LEFT EVERYTHING BEHIND-EXCEPT HIS PEN AND PAPER. ”MATTHEW NOBLY USED HIS LITERARY SKILL TO BECOME THE FIRST MAN EVER TO COMPILE AN ACCOUNT OF THE TEACHING OF JESUS.” THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW ALSO TRIUMPHANTLY ENDS WITH JESUS COMMANDING HIS FOLLOWERS TO MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL THE NATIONS (MATTHEW 28:19-20)

LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League)

God’s Blessings in the New Year!!!

As we start this New Year untouched and unmarred, may we try to do better than the year just past. May we be more caring, more understanding, more compassionate, more wise and kinder. How will we use the days of the New Year? How will we use the time God places in our hands? Let us seek the

Lord in prayer and place our future plans in God’s care. The topic for the January, 2020, Circle meeting is found in the Winder 2019 Quarterly on page 16, entitled “Beautiful Savior”, authored by Shari Miller, Montana District LWML President. Roll call word “Scars” (physical or of the heart) Alpha Circle will meet Tuesday, January 14th, at 1:00 p.m. at the home of Darsa Clay with Jana Harms as her co-hostess. Topic will be led by Ruth Brackman. Cindy McCubbin will check the acolyte robes for laundering or mending needs. For more information, please call the President of Alpha Circle, Wanda Thurnau at 816-524-8099. Lydia Circle will meet Wednesday, January 15th, at 1:30 p.m. in the Church Fellowship Hall. Lisa Thornton and Lois Gilham will host the meeting. Kathleen Jarvis will lead the topic. For more information, please call Kathleen Jarvis, Vice-President of Lydia Circle, at 816-763-2894. “Thank you and Thank you.” What a tremendous year we had at Peace. All because our wonderful congregation stepped up, rolled up their sleeves and showed what they are really made of. School supplies were provided for our childcare, cushions in the hall windows were replaced, and renovations in the Fellowship Hall included new chairs. The kitchen was rearranged to help those preparing meals—65th Anniversary dinner was served to over 200 people and Thanksgiving dinner was served to more than 250 people. LWML bake sale raised funds for Beautiful Savior Home and Lutheran High School. Quilts made by the Sewing Bee ladies were distributed to agencies around the area. May God bless each and everyone in our congregation for the tremendous support given, be it funds or muscle in sprucing up our church, but also providing assistance needed in our community. “Prayer Service” – “Living in Love, Bearing Fruit” - We are chosen and called to bear fruit for Jesus. We do this as we live in His love, not only in our home or church, but also in the world, where it is often more difficult to lose others. The author of this Prayer Service is Rev. Dr. Gregory S Walton, a native New Yorker. He is a graduate of Concordia College in Bronxville, New York and Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. NEW TIME – Starting in January, the LWML Unit Meeting will start at 10:00 a.m. and will be hosted by Alpha Circle. “Whoever loves God must also love his brother”, (1 John 4:21) Ruth Oexman, Communications Chairperson

Sewing Bee

Yes! We did it! We completed 142 quilts and 72 lap robes and baby quilts during 2019. They were given away to the following places: Lutheran Urban Mission Agency Ozanam Home Raytown Emergency Assistance Program House of Hope St. Louis Seminary Students Beautiful Savior Home Mother’s Refuge

This year 12 quilts were purchased by congregation members and the donations were put in our fund for purchasing batting and other supplies for making quilts in 2020. We appreciate it very much. This has been an ongoing project since 2002. Many, many quilts, lap robes and baby quilts have been made and given away.

The following ladies attended in 2019: Dorily Miller Sue Bollman Julia Kleschulte Judy Bray Norma Whitaker Ruth Oexman Cara Ewart Helen Sunderland Ruth Cooper Wanda Thurnau Jana Harms Darla Wolters Theresa Mitchell Mae Walter

Contact one of these ladies if you would like more information.

If your excuse for not coming is “I don’t sew”, there are many other ways to help – such as sorting, pressing, marking, cutting, designing and tacking. We accomplish a lot and have fun and fellowship, too. If you can’t come every Monday, come whenever you can. We meet in the Fellowship Hall about 9:30 a.m., bring a sack lunch and stay into the afternoon. We plan to resume meeting January 13th.

SAVE, SAVE, SAVE

Please save your Best Choice UPC’s: 1,000 were sent in during December to receive a check for $60.00 which goes into our Mission Fund to buy supplies for making quilts. Also save “Box Tops for Education”, but not Campbell soup labels. Save cancelled postage stamps (but no Christmas or Flag Forever stamps). Containers for these are on the shelf in the Narthex.
